[Veritas-bu] Netbackup With Data Domain

2014-01-27 Thread Sunil Gulati
Hello,

Can we use DDboost feature over FC ? Like I have production and a DR site
in my environment. I have data domain netbackup media servers at both
location. I have kept tape library at my primary site for tape outs.

I want to use SLP which will run 4 backup jobs (Backup, Replication,
Import duplication) means I'll be replicating my backup images from
production site to DR site using DDboost.

I want to know if I can use the same over FC ?

Thanks

Sunil

Hi Sunil,

I believe you can use DD Boost over FC between media server and DD. With
NetWorker you can use ClientDirect with FC, too if memory serves me well.
However, DDs can't replicate over FC atm, you have to use 1 or 10 gig links
to replicate data.

Of course you need DD OS 5.4+, DD Boost plug-in 2.6+ and NBU 7.6. Don't
forget to check your FC infrastructure with EMC for DD Boost over FC
compatibility. EMC pre-sales should pass your configuration through a
qualification process, in theory.

Best regards, Mikhail

[Veritas-bu] NBU 7.6.0.1 and Appliance 2.6.0.1

2014-01-27 Thread tsimerson
Actually, there are two significant database changes. The EMM database is
being upgraded from Sybase 11 to Sybase 12. This is one of the causes for
lengthy upgrades. This process (I believe) is to actually dump the database,
upgrade Sybase and then reload the database. This is where if you have
millions of images or unpruned TIR information, you can run into significant
delays in a master server upgrade. There is an EEB for the current version of
NetBackup that will trim the TIR information.

There is also a major import of data if you are using an MSDP. Symantec has
gotten rid of the PostgresSQL database for MSDP and have integrated it into the
Sybase database. This is another source of long upgrade times.

I've been reading on some of the Symantec discussion sites where upgrades were
estimated to be 3-4 hours and they actually took 8-10 hours.

Symantec's support site seems to be sluggish/down at the moment but I'll post
the EEB information as soon as I can get to their website.

[Veritas-bu] NBU 7.6.0.1 and Appliance 2.6.0.1

2014-01-27 Thread tsimerson
Finally able to get to Symantec web sites. The issue with the TIR pruning not
working correctly is isolated to 7.5.0.6. There is a specific EEB that you can
get to patch either NBU 7.5.0.6 or appliance version 2.5.3. The other solution
is to patch up to NBU 7.5.0.7 or appliance version 2.5.4.

Let this run for at least 24 hours for a normal image clean up process to
complete.

The only caveat of the 7.5.0.7 patch is that you can't upgrade 7.5.0.7 to
7.6 yet.

So, if anyone is planning upgrade to 7.6 soon - do not install 7.5.0.7
