Re: [Veritas-bu] Netbackup , Vmware and Netapp

2012-09-06 Thread Abhishek Dhingra1
Please find my answer :-

1. Do you need to do file level restores of this VM that has these huge
number of files? YES, Application owner will very frequently require the
files restoration
2. About how many and what kind of files (.avi, .mkv, .jpg, etc.) comprise
the huge number of files? PDF AND XML
3. What is the retention requirements for the VM? Hours, days, weeks,
years? DATA REQUIEMENT IS 8 YEARS RETENTION FOR FULL BACKUP AND 3 MONTHS
FOR INCREMENTAL
4. How does the VM see the disks: via Diskstore or RDM? DISKSTORE ONLY

As you have suggested Netbackup have a feature for backing up VMDK, But
that requires equal amount of space in the datastore. Please correct me if
i am wrong.

There are several factors here that will help determine what technologies
you should look at:

1. Do you need to do file level restores of this VM that has these huge
number of files?
2. About how many and what kind of files (.avi, .mkv, .jpg, etc.) comprise
the huge number of files?
3. What is the retention requirements for the VM? Hours, days, weeks,
years?
4. How does the VM see the disks: via Diskstore or RDM?

Wayne's comment of using the Snap Mirror/Snap Vault is good if you have a
second NetApp to snap the data to. This is good for short term data
protection especially if that second NetApp is at a offsite facility.

NetBackup has a feature that allow you to backup the VMDK file itself
(which is very efficient for data streaming) but will actually index the
files inside the VMDK allowing for file level restores or restoring the
entire VMDK.

If you can respond to the questions above, I bet we can come up with
options for you.

[Veritas-bu] Strange problem with ORACLE and DB2 backups

2012-02-28 Thread Abhishek Dhingra1
Just thought to share the new backup problem with the community. We are
yet to come on to the solution, but in case anyone has faced the problem ,
please provide the solution

We are running AIX 5.3 , 6.1, for the netbackup master and client servers.
the problem is with the AIX servers where ORACLE and DB2 is hosted and
we are taking the online backup using the netbackup agent. Netbackup
version is 7.1.0.2

Normally , every backup is initiated by the master server on it scheduled
time, in case of online database backup, parent and child stream gets
generated , which actually writes the backup on the tape.

But In our case , suddenly all online database backup started failing
with error code 6. After digging the root cause, we found that OS team has
upgraded the openssl version from 0.9.8.806 to 12.9.8.1302. Tested the
backup after downgrading the openssl to the older version, backup ran fine

We have escalated the case to symantec and will ask them to provide the
engineering binary. In case any one has faced the similar issue, please
help me to get rid of this.

I have successfully configured BLAT with nbmail. This is has led to lot of

Is there anyway to configure BLAT in such a manner so that it would not

[Veritas-bu] Best architecture for deduplication with NetBackup

Jcs, I work at a government agency, Brazil's Central Bank, like the US
FED. I can't just choose the solution I want to buy. I need to specify
what I need and wait for the best (lower price) proposal that fits what we
need.
So I'm doing some PoCs so I can know the players, what features they have
and what then don't.
So far I've tested the EMC Avamar, IBM Fastback (which doesn't fit) and
CommVault Simpana.
The EMC Avamar seems to be the one that best fits our needs.
Now we are trying to test the NetBackup but its documentation is really
confusing.
We bought the Clariions to store the backup data. That's why I'm don't
want do buy storage appliances unless the prices aren't to much different
as you said.

-- ORIGINAL MESSAGE --

If you're of a size to consider this seriously, you can afford the
appliances. Especially since the cost will not be a complete shock when
compared next to comparable NBU functionality licensing.

Data Domain just *works*. No futzing. Point a media server at it,
configure replication, done. It really *is* that simple.

Having said that, Your message doesn't quite make clear why your desire
to stay with NBU as the core for this is so strong, but ... from your
description, this is actually a situation where EMC's Avamar could
possibly be the best solution overall.

ObDisclaimer: Just a satisfied customer. Who tried, and hated, NBU
Dedupe, especially when compared to DD.

We also faced same issue and below is the Symantec recommendation which
resolved it

There are two things I would recommend to minimize these kinds of things
happening in the future. Both will require a restart of NetBackup on the
master so most likely you will need a maintenance window.

The first thing is to tune the resource broker (nbrb) so it releases
resources faster. Below is the technote on how to do this:
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH57942

The second things is to clear out all the stale CORBA handles. Some of
them go all the way back to 2009:
-rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 455 Sep 8 2009
nbproxy_nbsl-DeviceManagement-101.ior.mgr
-rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 455 Sep 16 2009
nbproxy_nbsl-DeviceManagement-104.ior.mgr
Below is the technote on how to do this:
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH75227

It is not directly related but is always a good practice to clear these
out. They can cause the system to run out of sockets. Let me know if you
need anything else. If not I would like to close the case.

Hi,

We are on Netbackup 7.0 and using KMS to encrypt the tape’s before we send
them offsite.

I have got a new requirement, where one of the department want to do there
server’s backup via Netbackup Client with encryption option.

But they don’t want to allow Veritas Netbackup Administrator to restore
there backups. i.e. during the restore they will (want) enter the
encryption key for restore.

Please advise how I can achieve this.

[Veritas-bu] Fw: KMS encryption

2010-06-15 Thread Abhishek Dhingra1
Thanks for the reply.

Today i tried configuring the KMS on my master server(running on AIX). It
worked perfectly fine, i took help from veritas support and according to
them we can only keep one key in the key database, it will always use the
same key for encrypting the data. Every time we need to change the
encryption key , we need to define the new key and deactivate the one that
is activated.

Have you tried configuring more then one key at the same time.

Moreover doing restore on another site , will require encryption license
to be applied on the tape library at another site, in case if we dont have
encryption feature enabled at hardware on another site, is there any way
to perform the restore.

Yes, I recently started.

It is one chapter in the Security and Encryption book, look for the book
for the version you are running. In the 6.5 it is chapter 6.

I have aix media servers so I cannot do MESO

If I wanted to hardware encryption using my IBM library I would have to
PAY IBM a lot of money Plus get the Tivoli key management system.

Kms comes with NB.
I just went to my library and turned on “Application Managed Encryption”
Then I setup the kms database and made my volume pools
NOTE: in 6.5.5 you can only use 2 encrypted volume pools. In 7.0 you can
use 20.

So now I am doing hardware encryption – that is where all the work is done
on the tape drive – it also does my compression so no extra over head on
my master or media.

Read the chapter carefully –
Make sure that the kms dir is not put on your catalog tape, and do no
encrypt the catalog tape ( that’s like locking your keys in the car)
I have two sites.
I made my kms on one master, then just copied the database to the other
master, this way I know all encrypted key tags match and I can read
encrypted tapes at both sites.

Once reading the chapter I saw how easy it really was.

Just make sure you document you password strings and keep them in a secure
place – not in just any file on disk where someone else could find them.

[Veritas-bu] TKLM vs KMS

2010-06-15 Thread Abhishek Dhingra1
My company is insisting me to implement Tivoli Key Life cycle manger(TKLM
) software for hardware encryption as in TKLM we can generate a group(more
then 100) of keys for encryption as compared to KMS in which we can
generate only one Key.

Has anyone integrated TKLM with Veritas Netbackup.Pls suggest how it works

The PBX binaries are on both DVD1 and DVD2 of your install media (pick
one). I believe 6.5.4 patches PBX, but if you have an older version that
isn't compatible with the 6.5.4 patch, you need to upgrade it from the
install media.
To install or upgrade your existing PBX, go to the appropriate NB_65_ICS..
directory (based on your platform type) on the DVD. Run the install file
and then follow the prompts. It's not difficult or painful at all.

I've got 2 master servers configured in NOM. One master is at 6.5.2 (as

6.5.1 and initially comes up online, then partially online, then goes
offline. Are there any logs to tell me WHY it's going offline? Is it
because of the latency between the NOM server and the master? Backups at
the other master are working fine and Aptare StorageConsole isn't have any

Where can I go to look to see why NOM doesn't like it?

Also you have not mentioned on which platform you installed NOM, it only

Hi All,

I've just installed NOM here and it seems to be okay, but i cant add my
master server on it.
Everytime I try to add a Master Server, it complains with the message
below:
Server DTSBKP could not be located. Make sure the server is reachable on
the network and NetBackup is running.
NOM server and NBU Master server are on different networks, but theres no
firewall between them.
NOM server is listed in NBU Master's servers list.
I checked connection in both ways with ping, telnet on port 1556,
traceroute, etc, and everything is okay, but it keeps telling me that it
cant locate the Master Server.

Any tips?

Cheers,
Nick

Re: [Veritas-bu] Compression of catalog images

The impact of compression during backup windows may be significant when
you first turn it on. It may have a lot of compressing to do. I mitigated
this by setting compression on for images older than 1 year, then the next
day set it to 6 months, then 3 months the next day, then 1 month, so the
initial surge in compression was spread over several days.

If I recall correctly, decompression of the catalog image occurs before
you initate the restore. The catalog image gets decompressed when you
browse it using the restore GUI.

This of course means that doing large searches for files using the GUI (or
command line) can cause your catalog to grow significantly in a short
period of time.

If you are restore from something like RMAN, I guess the decompression
would occur when RMAN starts the restore for each image. But any delay
should be negligible since the catalog images are so small - just
containing one file.

The degree of the impact will of course be highly dependent on how much
processing power you have available on your master server, the I/O
throughput to your catalog, and the number of files in the backup you are
trying to restore from.

We compress catalog entries older than about 30 days. Not that we restore
from them often, but when we do, the delay while the image is decompressed
is not noticeable. (But then, the backup/restore GUI is never snappy - I
guess I am used to the spinning hourglass).

Abhishek,

Best to do test restores, it can impact it quite a bit if you are
restoring
many small files, up to 10-30 minutes on slower disks I/O subsystems.

You also need to have enough space to decompress the compressed images.

It depends on the I/O / where the images are stored.
It depends on how many files you are restoring.

if above doesnot work , increease the logging level of nbpem(117) using

It's broken with 6.0MP5 (catalog compression) upgrade to 6.0MP6 or later
before doing that! It works pretty well, compressed a ~100-120GiB catalog
to ~25-35GiB for us.

[Veritas-bu] strange situation-Adding the media server

2008-06-02 Thread Abhishek Dhingra1
Hi All,

I am running to a very strange stuation, of which Symantec also not
able to provide any solution from last 1 month, they also keep asking for
the same logs everytime.

I have one Master server running on AIX 5.3 MP7 with Netbackup version
6.0 MP5. This master server has around 60 Media server attached to
it(Including 58 SAN Media Server and 2 Normal Media server). I am running
the SSO environment.
Now when i am adding the new media server, it actualy slows down the
performance of the Master server, Master server nbrb daemon able to
allocate the resources quickly, but after coming into the Connected state
, it takes 12-15 minutes for actually mounting the drive and this time is
increasing gradually and comes upto 1 hour.
Now when i remove the media server from the configuration and recycle the
master server services , everything becomes normal, Any help on this
appreciated.

[Veritas-bu] question about restores in NB 6.5.x

Hello Netbackup Gurus,

So I thought I would toss this out and get some feedback.

As we all know, Netbackup automatically sets restore jobs to have the
highest priority when placed into the queue, barring any changes to the
configuration, acts of the unknown and just plain weird stuff That
being said, we had a issue during a disaster recovery scenario where we
had multiple restores running and fighting for resources. On top of that,
we had to try and organize the restores in such a way that this restore
runs first, followed by this one, than this one and so on (i.e. set a
priority/order within the restore jobs). My question is that in my
digging on google and symantec's site, I can't seem to find anything that
would let me change the priority/order of multiple restore jobs; has
anyone run into this and/or devised a method and/or has some tips on how
they handle restores during a disaster recovery scenario in order to set
priorities on what gets what resources and thus done first?

It will bring all the queued state backups into the active state.

Also what symantec suggessted me after checkung the logs that there is a

at the time you face this situation, nbemm will be consumming the more

In case of Lotus-Notes backup, you need to edit the notes.ini, comment the

NetBackup (and therfore VxSS) rely on host configure name services to be
accurate. As long as your nsswitch.conf has hosts listed and hosts are
correct, NetBackup will function fine.

Can VXSS be enabled with the /etc/hosts also, or is it necessary to

[Veritas-bu] nbpem and bpsched

2008-02-01 Thread Abhishek Dhingra1
Hi,

Anyone help me in getting the hidden options with the nbpem command.

Like one i found with bptm , that is #bptm - makedbtentry.

In netbackup 5.1 , if i want to stop the scheduler to create the worklist,
we run the command #bpconfig -tries 0. In Netbackup 6.0, bpsched has been
removed and functionality distributed to nbpem and nbjm, Is there any
command to stop the nbpem daemon to read the policy configuration for time
being.

I am taking a backup of Red Hat Linux 2.4 using NB 4.5.
My backup ends with the status 174.
The logs say [from client es4:Incorrectly built binary which accesses
error or h_errorno directly.Need to be fixed]
I checked on client for binaries (as sugggested by status code solution).
When I run /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bpcd on client I got the same error
message : Incorrectly built binary which accesses error or h_errorno
directly.Need to be fixed.
I reinstalled the NB client software and again tried to take backup, but
getting the same error.
What should I do ???

We have found this in most cases to be related to NIC settings being our
of sync.
Or related to firewall performance if the backup is coming through a
firewall.

For 100MB both NIC and switch should be 100FDX no auto negotiate.

There are some regristry hacks to deal with the firewall issue.

04:27:05.852 [81170] 16 bpbkar: ERR - bpbkar killed by SIGPIPE

I performed all the name resolution process from nslookup up to the
Netbackup tools bpclntcmd all are successful and able to communicate to
both client and the server/media. But the message above frequently appears
on the logs.

Is this a heavy network load issue?

If the system you are having trouble with has GigE on both ends, and you
are autoneg, your problem is most likely
something else. The 100 Mbps full does not apply.

What speeds are you getting on the slow systems?

[Veritas-bu] database consistency and Compression

2008-01-15 Thread Abhishek Dhingra1
Hi Gurus,

Need help in doing Catalog Compression and database consistency
check, I am working in an environment where we are running our master
server on AIX with netbackup 6.0 MP4 and we have around 20 Media
Servers(including 10 SAN Media Server) and more then 500 client , The
environment is newly setup, so we have no schedule backup till now, we
have a seperate team to manually initiate all the Clients backup and the
backups runs continously without a free time in between.

In the process of streamlining the environment, we daily cancel lots
of running backups, and we always take the HOT catalog backup, there is
also inconsistency in the database, because database clean up process
doesnot run. So netbackup/db/images is increasing with a huge speed
almost 5 Gb a day. We are also not compressing the catalog images.

Now i want to manually initiate the Database Consistency check and
schedule the catalog compression( my thinking is above both task requires
no backup should be running at that time).

Will Appreciate the help from all of you!!
