Re: [Veritas-bu] Netbackup , Vmware and Netapp
Please find my answer :- 1. Do you need to do file level restores of this VM that has these huge number of files? YES, Application owner will very frequently require the files restoration 2. About how many and what kind of files (.avi, .mkv, .jpg, etc.) comprise the huge number of files? PDF AND XML 3. What is the retention requirements for the VM? Hours, days, weeks, years? DATA REQUIEMENT IS 8 YEARS RETENTION FOR FULL BACKUP AND 3 MONTHS FOR INCREMENTAL 4. How does the VM see the disks: via Diskstore or RDM? DISKSTORE ONLY As you have suggested Netbackup have a feature for backing up VMDK, But that requires equal amount of space in the datastore. Please correct me if i am wrong. Do you need to do file level restores of this VM that has these huge number of files? 2. About how many and what kind of files (.avi, .mkv, .jpg, etc.) comprise the huge number of files? 3. What is the retention requirements for the VM? Hours, days, weeks, years? 4. How does the VM see the disks: via Diskstore or RDM? Wayne's comment of using the Snap Mirror/Snap Vault is good if you have a second NetApp to snap the data to. This is good for short term data protection especially if that second NetApp is at a offsite facility. NetBackup has a feature that allow you to backup the VMDK file itself (which is very efficient for data streaming) but will actually index the files inside the VMDK allowing for file level restores or restoring the entire VMDK. If you can respond to the questions above, I bet we can come up with options for you. +-- |This was sent by t...@tjsimerson.org via Backup Central. |Forward SPAM to ab...@backupcentral.com. +-- ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu

[Veritas-bu] Strange problem with ORACLE and DB2 backups
Just thought to share the new backup problem with the community. We are yet to come on to the solution, but in case anyone has faced the problem , please provide the solution We are running AIX 5.3 , 6.1, for the netbackup master and client servers. the problem is with the AIX servers where ORACLE and DB2 is hosted and we are taking the online backup using the netbackup agent. Netbackup version is 7.1.0.2 Normally , every backup is initiated by the master server on it scheduled time, in case of online database backup, parent and child stream gets generated , which actually writes the backup on the tape. But In our case , suddenly all online database backup started failing with error code 6. After digging the root cause, we found that OS team has upgraded the openssl version from 0.9.8.806 to 12.9.8.1302. Tested the backup after downgrading the openssl to the older version, backup ran fine We have escalated the case to symantec and will ask them to provide the engineering binary. In case any one has faced the similar issue, please help me to get rid of this. Both will require a restart of NetBackup on the master so most likely you will need a maintenance window. The first thing is to tune the resource broker (nbrb) so it releases resources faster. Below is the technote on how to do this: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH57942 The second things is to clear out all the stale CORBA handles. Some of them go all the way back to 2009: -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 455 Sep 8 2009 nbproxy_nbsl-DeviceManagement-101.ior.mgr -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 455 Sep 16 2009 nbproxy_nbsl-DeviceManagement-104.ior.mgr Below is the technote on how to do this: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH75227 It is not directly related but is always a good practice to clear these out. Thanks for the reply. Today i tried configuring the KMS on my master server(running on AIX). It worked perfectly fine, i took help from veritas support and according to them we can only keep one key in the key database, it will always use the same key for encrypting the data. Every time we need to change the encryption key , we need to define the new key and deactivate the one that is activated. Have you tried configuring more then one key at the same time. Moreover doing restore on another site , will require encryption license to be applied on the tape library at another site, in case if we dont have encryption feature enabled at hardware on another site, is there any way to perform the restore. It is one chapter in the Security and Encryption book, look for the book for the version you are running. In the 6.5 it is chapter 6. I have aix media servers so I cannot do MESO If I wanted to hardware encryption using my IBM library I would have to PAY IBM a lot of money Plus get the Tivoli key management system. Kms comes with NB. I just went to my library and turned on “Application Managed Encryption” Then I setup the kms database and made my volume pools NOTE: in 6.5.5 you can only use 2 encrypted volume pools. In 7.0 you can use 20. So now I am doing hardware encryption – that is where all the work is done on the tape drive – it also does my compression so no extra over head on my master or media. Read the chapter carefully – Make sure that the kms dir is not put on your catalog tape, and do no encrypt the catalog tape ( that’s like locking your keys in the car) I have two sites. I made my kms on one master, then just copied the database to the other master, this way I know all encrypted key tags match and I can read encrypted tapes at both sites. Once reading the chapter I saw how easy it really was. Just make sure you document you password strings and keep them in a secure place – not in just any file on disk where someone else could find them. It may have a lot of compressing to do. I mitigated this by setting compression on for images older than 1 year, then the next day set it to 6 months, then 3 months the next day, then 1 month, so the initial surge in compression was spread over several days. If I recall correctly, decompression of the catalog image occurs before you initate the restore. The catalog image gets decompressed when you browse it using the restore GUI. This of course means that doing large searches for files using the GUI (or command line) can cause your catalog to grow significantly in a short period of time. If you are restore from something like RMAN, I guess the decompression would occur when RMAN starts the restore for each image. But any delay should be negligible since the catalog images are so small - just containing one file. The degree of the impact will of course be highly dependent on how much processing power you have available on your master server, the I/O throughput to your catalog, and the number of files in the backup you are trying to restore from. We compress catalog entries older than about 30 days. Not that we restore from them often, but when we do, the delay while the image is decompressed is not noticeable. (But then, the backup/restore GUI is never snappy - I guess I am used to the spinning hourglass). - Dean On Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 9:49 AM, Justin Piszcz [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On Wed, 16 Jul 2008, Abhishek Dhingra1 wrote: Justin, What is the impact of doing the restore, does it take more time.if yes, then hw much, We have around 1000 clients in our environment, with no free window. You also need to have enough space to decompress the compressed images. It depends on the I/O / where the images are stored. It depends on how many files you are restoring. [Veritas-bu] strange situation-Adding the media server
Hi All, I am running to a very strange stuation, of which Symantec also not able to provide any solution from last 1 month, they also keep asking for the same logs everytime. I have one Master server running on AIX 5.3 MP7 with Netbackup version 6.0 MP5. This master server has around 60 Media server attached to it(Including 58 SAN Media Server and 2 Normal Media server). I am running the SSO environment. Now when i am adding the new media server, it actualy slows down the performance of the Master server, Master server nbrb daemon able to allocate the resources quickly, but after coming into the Connected state , it takes 12-15 minutes for actually mounting the drive and this time is increasing gradually and comes upto 1 hour. Now when i remove the media server from the configuration and recycle the master server services , everything becomes normal, Any help on this appreciated. As per my knowledge , there is no way we can set the priority on the restore jobs. Priority of restore jobs depends upon the sequence you initiate the restore. As we all know, Netbackup automatically sets restore jobs to have the highest priority when placed into the queue, barring any changes to the configuration, acts of the unknown and just plain weird stuff That being said, we had a issue during a disaster recovery scenario where we had multiple restores running and fighting for resources. On top of that, we had to try and organize the restores in such a way that this restore runs first, followed by this one, than this one and so on (i.e. set a priority/order within the restore jobs). My question is that in my digging on google and symantec's site, I can't seem to find anything that would let me change the priority/order of multiple restore jobs; has anyone run into this and/or devised a method and/or has some tips on how they handle restores during a disaster recovery scenario in order to set priorities on what gets what resources and thus done first? -- Matthew MCP, MCSA, MCTS, OCA [EMAIL PROTECTED] Define Trouble: Why did you apply THAT patch?? ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu

I am facing the same issuein my environment, the problem lies with the nbemm daemon, because it is the daemon that allocates the resources , so whenever i face the issue, i just run the command #nbemm -terminate #nbemm It will bring all the queued state backups into the active state. Also what symantec suggessted me after checkung the logs that there is a memory leak problem with the daemon, please check the top command output at the time you face this situation, nbemm will be consumming the more paging space , and will be in the hung state. below error also occured in our environment, this can occur with the normal backup or with the Lotus Notes backup, if in your environment the problem was with the nprmal backup, the problem might be because of the network issue, you will get the logs in bptm logs. So netbackup/db/images is increasing with a huge speed almost 5 Gb a day. We are also not compressing the catalog images.
