Re: [Veritas-bu] NDMP backup problems

2012-08-27 Thread Baumann, Kevin
Thanks Len, I will try the NetApp logs.

I tried all paths in one policy with both single stream and multiple streams,
got the same results. I also took out one large path (/spec), created a
separate policy and still got the same issue. And the issue is the same with
both full and incremental backups. And I tried sending it to disk and tape,
still the same issue.

Do you have the netbackup ndmp debug logs turned on. The new ndmp logs can be
quite large.
If so do you see any more detail for the issue.
The easy and first answer given is that a path does not exist. But as you know
the 99 error can have many other causes.

Do you have the debug level set up on the netapp. You can started with the
messages file (/vol/vol0/etc/messages) and see if you can spot the error.
If not then try ndmpd debug 50
Make sure you toggle screen trace to false, so the debug messages do not flood
the console.

nasrv02# remsh marvel ndmpd debug
ndmpd debug verbose: 0
ndmpd debug stack trace: false
ndmpd debug screen trace: false
ndmpd debug file trace: true

Note: this can use a fair amount of disk space.

Can you split the jobs up into different policies? One path per policy.

All,

Linux OS, NetBackup 7.1.0.4, NDMP

I am running into backup issues with NDMP (NetApp filer). We have over 10
million files and several paths to backup. What is happening is the smaller
paths backup fine but once the larger path starts and NetBackup tries to get
the file list it times out with error 99. This also causes the smaller paths
to sometimes (not always, and not always the same paths) to time out. The
error code is my favorite - error 99.

Our paths (some excluded, LONG list)

/vol/checkpoint
/vol/journal
/vol/home_dir
/vol/projects --- LARGE # of files
/vol/spec --- LARGE # of files
/vol/history
/vol/reports

I have tried breaking out the large paths and that seems to help as the smaller
paths have no issues. But the large paths still timeout. I tried writing to
both tape and disk but I still get error 99. I also have the
NDMP_PROGRESS_TIMEOUT set to 24 hours (1440 minutes).

Anyone ever run into this? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

[Veritas-bu] VM backups

2012-03-13 Thread Baumann, Kevin
All,

I just started looking into backing up our VM's with Netbackup. I have a
couple of questions though.

- Should I look at Symantec's solution? Is there something better out there
(VEEM?)
- I will need to do single file restores, not just system restores, can
Symantec handle that with an all Linux environment?

- How do most people do this and how are the results?

Environment:
Master server/media servers - all Linux, NB version 7.1
VM Clients are Win/Unix.

Thanks,

Issue resolved.

The problem ended up being the NetApp that I was restoring to. The setup was
not correct, there was not enough space allocated (by about 1 MB). Increased
the volume on the NetApp and restore worked.

Thanks for the help.

[Veritas-bu] MS-Sql server

2010-09-23 Thread Baumann, Kevin
All,

My Windows team has asked me if I can see what databases have been backed up on
a particular Windows server. It is running MS-SQL, and when the master server
kicks off the backup it looks at a .bch script on that server. It looks to me
like the backups work, but I cannot find a way to say what actual databases
were backed up. Is there an easy way to do that?

And can I assume that if I get a status 0, that all the databases in the .bch
file get backed up?

Linux master/media server, 6.5.6. Client is Windows 2003 server (r2) running
MS-Sql server.

Thanks.

Len,

Thanks for your response.

I am using IBM LTO4 drives. The IBM model is 3388.

The tape carts are either IBM or Sony, both types have the same issues.

The drives are around 9 months old.

The tape carts are vary in age, none older than 9 months.

There is nothing in the log that says why the tape freezes. I have the
log level set to 5 and I sent the logs to Symantec.

No encryption.

No sharing of the tape drives.

The tape library has no errors on it. Checked through the web gui.

Hello Kevin,

Which model of tape drives are you using?

Which model of tape carts are you using?

How old are the tape drives?

How old are the tape carts?

What messages are you seeing in bptm for the tape? You might have to
search back a bit from the freezing to find the reason that netbackup is
reporting for the freezing.

Are you using encryption?

Are you sharing the tape drives between media servers?

If you use the web interface to the tape library, can you see any errors
for the tape drives or the library that match up with these problems?

Unfortunately (to my knowledge), wildcards are not supported with NDMP backups.
You’ll have to explicitly supply the paths. What we do is:

1) Have a policy where you’ve explicitly listed paths, ie:

a. /vol/vol1/first

b. /vol/vol1/second

2) Have a second policy checking to see if new paths have been added. For
us, that means:

a. we’ve mounted via NFS the root of the volume, (ie: vol1) on the backup
master server,

b. and it’s backed up using a “Standard” backup policy for that mountpoint
(cross mount points required).

c.You exclude each in individual paths you are backing up in #1,

d. and if the #2 backup policy ever grows larger than a set amount (32kB
for example), we get an email saying something along the lines “a new vol1
path has been added” so,

e. We have new paths to add to policy #1

Elegant eh? (read sarcastically of course)

If I setup the policy to just backup /vol/vol2/data it works.

This is on Netbackup 6.5.3 and is connecting to a Netapp via IP (can't
connect it via fibre). And the OS of the master/media servers are SuSE
linux.

Thanks.

Something seems wrong here, check jnbSA/make sure all the appropriate
processes are active- I normally see that when one of the processes down
or a service died, or xinetd/inetd is not started.

If you can, try to cycle services (bp.kill_all) & netbackup start (if
possible).

If all else fails, check all of the logs in usr/openv/netbackup/logs/* for
today's date and there you should find the problem :)

You need to purchase the advanced client (aka the snapshot client). It's not
an expensive client but it's tiered based on the size of the client server.

The client is installed by default in Windows but the Advanced Client needs to
be installed separately for Unix.

Make sure you read and follow the installation instructions. There are bunch
of caveats but once installed correctly, it works very well.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Is anyone using a HP MSL 8096 tape library?

2009-01-26 Thread Baumann, Kevin
I have used the IBM TS 3310 as well as the 3584. Both are very solid
systems and work well. IBM support has been excellent as well. If I
place a call for any issue I get a call back within 15 min, usually
sooner.

Have you looked at Quantum? I have also used a ADIC (now Quantum) I2000
library, which also worked well. If I had to choose, I would prefer the
IBM hardware though.

We're looking to buy a new tape library and the MSL 8096 is a favorite
so far with the IBM TS 3310 being a close second. Also looked at the Sun
SL500 but they are a mavbe due to Sun's financial problems. HP and IBM
are doing OK.

For pricing we were quoted about the same for each one with the
difference being IBM support is 3 times HP support.

We know we can't upgrade the HP, but pricewise it's the same to buy
another 8096 compared to buying a new expansion for the TS 3310 and 2
drives.

Looking for any opionions if anyone has used it.

In Ancient Greece, "hubris" referred to actions taken in order to shame

most evident when looking at those in charge and how they used hubris
when making decisions in their justice system and personal lives. The
word came about when describing people who considered themselves more

Notice that the definition doesn't say anything about the pride being
unwarranted.

Even better is the Thesaurus entry:

Noun1.hubris - overbearing pride or presumption

arrogance , haughtiness

Notice here again it specifically states the targets of the hubris are

Back when I was young and dumb I thought MS-DOS was a great thing but
then I got to work on REAL operating systems like UNIX/Linux and learned
the difference.

There was a Dilbert strip a few years back:

Guy replies: "Here's a nickel. Buy yourself a real computer."

Funny that.

UNIX has been going to "succumb" any day now ever since 1970.

Interestingly the UNIX Clone, Linux, is taking market share away from

I'm not 100% sure, but I was always told no, you cannot change the IP.
Maybe someone else can help, sorry.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Ip change on master server

Quick question:
Can you change the ip address on a master server?
I know you can't change the hostname, but I can't remember if you can
change the ip address without any issues.

Thanks

[Veritas-bu] NDMP errors

2008-04-21 Thread Baumann, Kevin
Hi all,

I am new to this list, so forgive me if I post with any etiquette
errors.

I am getting several 219 (storage unit not available) errors on my NDMP
policy. I have recently added a tape drive to that pool and that is
when the errors started.

I have it configured the same way the other drive is and I have
confirmed that the new drive works. I have also run some set_ndmp_attr
-verify commands and the authorization is fine.

Has anyone else seen this? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

-Kevin
