Re: [Veritas-bu] Fixing catalog inconsistencies

2012-07-06 Thread Bhangui, Sandeep - BLS CTR
Mark

Untar that zip file that you send to support and within that tar bundle you
will have a file called nbcc-info.txt that file has all the details and
hopefully you should be able to find any inconsistencies listed in that file.

Obviously the fix will depend on what the inconsistencies are but typically
support can provide you a file with the necessary lines within the file which
you will have to run with nbccr. That is what I had to do when I had some
issues that I had to address.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Fixing catalog inconsistencies

While I wait for support to get around to actually analyzing the NBCC bundle I
sent them, can anyone tell me what the process is likely to be to fix the
catalog inconsistencies that the NBCC tool says it found ?

We have one host that we cannot run synthetic fulls against because of an
apparent catalog inconsistency. Incremental backups against the same host work
fine but synth fulls fail with a 671.

I ran the NBCC tool and it says it found something but obviously didn't tell me
what.

Any input on likely next steps greatly appreciated !!

Starting from the basics, have you checked that in the catalog policy (under

you have checked the box stating you want send the DR file in an email

[Veritas-bu] Scheduler woes with Ver 6.0 + MP3

2006-07-25 Thread Bhangui, Sandeep - BLS CTR
Hi
Wondering whether anyone on this forum has seen this behavior.

Environment: Solaris 8 shop.

Master and Media on the same server running Netbackup Ver 6.0 + MP3.
This is a fresh 6.0 install.

Adic scalar 24 attached to the Master server.

Backups run fine for few days and than the scheduler just stops working.
The scheduler can be made to work only by stopping and starting
Netbackup.

Some features seen in the process are.

1. Typically the scheduler stops working when the backup on one of the
clients has failed with a status code. From the status code one can
figure out why the client failed. But I cannot find the reason as to why
the scheduler just stops working when such a incident occurs.

I think in the normal scheme of things if a backup on a client fails
than the software should just put the Status error code and move on to
the other scheduled policies and perform the backups for those policies.
But that is not happening. Once the backup of a client has failed no
other policies scheduled after that runs.

2. Once the above mentioned situation happens. If I try to run
"/etc/init.d/netbackup" or bp.kill_all to stop Netbackup. It cannot stop
the Policy Execution Manager, it just hangs while trying to stop that.

No choice but to CTRL C out and than use kill -9 to kill all nbpem
processes. Once those are killed and I run /etc/init.d/netbackup stop or
bp.kill_all it stops all the remaining processes and comes back to the
prompt.

Somehow my nbpem process is getting hosed/or hung . I am working with
Support on this and provided them the requested logs. Not heard back
from them and hence wondering if anyone has seen anything like this, as
I know Ver 6.0 has lot of issues with Scheduler but was told by support
that all necessary patches for scheduler are included in MP3.

Any suggestions.

Thanks
Sandeep

There is a
NetBackup Encryption Option that you can purchase on a per client basis that
encrypted the data from the client all the way to the tape. The encryption
strength can be set anywhere form 40 or 6 bit DES up to 256 bit AES
(assuming you have NBU 5.1 or higher).
Bear in mind that
encryption will make the data essentially uncompressible so turn on software
compression on the client of you want it and use the uncompressed tapes
drives. Since encryption (and compression) will take place on the client, it
will impact backup speed and varies by how high the encryption is
set.
The other option is
look for hardware compression between the Media server and the tape
drives.

Have you tried the Java GUI? It can be installed and
upgraded independently of the Master server so may allow you to set up a DSSU
properly as you can run it with a different maintenance pack if needs
  be.

The Java client patched with MP2 is able
to create a DSSU in the Windows environment.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Disk Staging in Netbackup Ver 6.0 MP2

2006-06-29 Thread Bhangui, Sandeep - BLS CTR
Title: Message

Hello
The objective here was to create a Disk Staging Storage Unit (DSSU) and not
merely Disk Storage Unit (DSU).

I followed the procedure in teh
Netbackup System Admin Guide for UNIX Ver 6.0  (Pages 48-49). The procedure
basically is as follows.

1. From the GUI click on new storage
unit.

2. Selected " Disk" as the Storage
unit type.

3.  Selected "Basic Disk" as the
Disk Type.

4. Provided the absolute pathe name
to the filesystem that I created for the dsu. ( e.g /dsu1)

5. Now just below that I have teh
following options.

   Max concurrent jobs
allowed :  ( I can edit this)

   Reduce fragment size :
(If I check the box I can edit this)

   High Water Mark : ( I
can edit this)

   Low Water Mark (Staging
only) : This option is greyed out I CANNOT EDIT THIS OPTION or in  other
words not available.

6. As per the manual I should also
see one more checkbox " This storage unit is a temp staging area" . I DO NOT SEE
THIS BOX AT ALL IN THE ABOVE gui.

Is there a separate WAY to create a DSSU as opposed to DSU??? Because I
am intrested in creating a DSSU and Not merely a DSU.

Also someone on this forum has mentioned that with Ver 6.0 and MP2 the "low
water mark" option is not available in the GUI when used on a UNIX master/media
and that it was available in Ver 6.0 MP1.

Maybe it is a BUG in  Ver 6.0 MP2.

ThanksSandeep

Agreed.

But at
this point the Netbackup is not even configured completely and no backups are
being initiated through Netbackup.

"sgscan" I guess is just a command to probe devices
just as you have "inquire" in legato. I found it strange that merely running
"sgscan" and not doing anything else would give me this
result.

BTW
running "inquire" does not do anything to the ADIC library which is configured
with Netbackup.

  It

I am
running 6.0 MP1 and the Sun boxed is patched with the latest patches I am not
sure whether I should be  looking for a "specific" patch to address this
issue. That "specific"patch may not be at the current level.

Thanks
Sandeep

[Veritas-bu] NetBackup 6.x conflict with Legato

2006-02-24 Thread Bhangui, Sandeep - BLS CTR
Hello
We are in the process of migrating from Legato Networker to
Veritas Netbackup. We are in the testing mode for Netbackup but there is
enough pressure to start rolling out Netbackup. I was wondering whether
anyone on this list has seen the following behiavour.

I have a Solaris 8 box which acts as a Legato Server and backing up
other clients to a L25 2 tape drive (DLT 8000) with 20 slots jukebox.
The backups are running fine.

I have gone ahead and installed the Veritas Netbackup Server on the same
server which has one more JUKE box attached to it ADIC Scalar 24 (LT02
two tape drives and 20 slots). I am in the process of configuring the
ADIC jukebox with Netbackup and other clients. Presently Netbackup is
not in a opertaional mode just the services are running and
configurtaion is in progress.

But as soon as I run "sgscan" on the server it sees everything correctly
that is both the jukeboxes and other stuff.
But the minute when the command has finished running. It somehow
disables the functionlaity of the L25 Jukebox through Legato. What I
mean by disabling functionality is through Legato I cannot unmount or
mount anything using the GUI. I cannot run "nsrjb" command at the server
nor can I delete the jukebox completely through Legato and recreate it.
Every time I try to run an jukebox related Legato command I get "I/O
Error and MODE_SENSE Failed error".

The only way I have found to fix this is "turn of the server" disconnect
the scsi cables at both ends from the two libraries reset the libraries
connect the cables back and turn the server on. Once that is done I can
use all commands to access the L25 Jukebox through Legato. I can
recreate this as I have tried this three times with the same result was
wondering has anyone else seen this.

Thanks
Sandeep

[Veritas-bu] Ver 6.0MP1

2006-02-15 Thread Bhangui, Sandeep - BLS CTR

Hi
New to this software had a quick question.

How do I find out ( through CLI or GUI) as to how much of the "tape" is
filled up in terms of capacity?? We are using LT02 drives with 200GB
nominal and 400 gb compressed capacity. Wanted to find out what capacity
I am getting on my tapes when a tape is full or partially full.

Hopefully someone can provide an option to get the information.

Running Netbackup in a complete Sun Solaris Shop.

Thanks
Sandeep

[Veritas-bu] Netbackup issues with NDMP restores

2006-02-01 Thread Bhangui, Sandeep - BLS CTR
Title: Message

Hi

We backup tons of data on the filer we have using Veritas Netbackup using NDMP.
Our NDMP backups are for all volumes coming from the filer which are NFS
mounted on UNIX hosts primarily used for oracle and
weblogic.

I have
read lot of posts on the forum that "NDMP restore sucks" can someone please
elaborate on this is what is the real issue/concern. Can we not restore a single
file or directory if recovered and does the whole volume has to be restored back
for this???

We
have not had a situation where we have to restore from tapes but after reading
so many posts on the forum regarding "NDMP restores" I am  little
concerned. And all reviopus posts on this seem to say that the NDMP restore
sucks and follks recommend to do NFS mount backups from the server for easy
restore.

Can
someone throw some light on this.

Thanks
Sandeep
