Re: [Veritas-bu] VMWAre slow performance

2016-04-06 Thread Christopher Costa
What storage media are you writing too?

What is the performance you are experiencing? Check your VMware host
information in your policy. Check your communication between ESX and media
server and master server.

Treat the VM as a physical host, install client and back it up that way and
see what you get.

Where NBU performance flourishes is when multiple snapshots are running
concurrently in combination with NBU Accelerator.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Netbackup Appliance Vs Data Domain

2014-11-17 Thread Christopher Costa
The 5220 appliance RAID card was powered by a battery and the battery went
bad on them sometimes. Since the 5230 the RAID card is capacity and we have
had zero problems since then. The 5230 with the 2.6.0.2 code can scale up
to 148TB now, the 5330 will scale up to 450TB by summer.

I appreciate all the posts and opinions, i welcome some more as the

I do feel Scott's issue may be 5220 appliance and with 5330's added
capacity/performance it should get better as also noted by 5230 user.

we have 3 customers who are currently in the works for being 100% tapeless.
Each one of them has over 150-200TB of full backups.

Re: [Veritas-bu] NetBackup NDMP backups need to restore to another Filer non-celera

2013-09-05 Thread Christopher Costa
No because it gets duplicated in the orginal NDMP format.

On Thursday, September 5, 2013, Lightner, Jeff wrote:

Couldn't you use bpduplicate to duplicate the backup using the original
device as the source and the new one as the target?

Our vaulting regularly duplicates deduplication (Data Domain/Quantum DXi)
appliance backups to tape to be sent offsite. (Yes I know you can have
offsite dedupe appliance and avoid this but we don't have those.)

Probably not but you can ask EMC. We had a similar issue and still have a
Celerra without support, just to allow restores until the backups expire.

NDMP uses the native 'dump' capability of the appliance, which is
proprietary. It *is* possible to tell it to use 'tar' but I guess that is
 too late.

It's possible the Celerra does use some format that can be read, but the
problem often is that it may be storing both Windows and UNIX style ACLs at
the same time, which would require it to do something unusual.

 Hi All,

We had EMC Celera NAS Filers backups taken by NetBackup NDMP Agent.

However these Filers were decommissioned .

I remember a limitation that if NDMP backups, backed through a particular
filer can be restored only to a filer of similar make and model . It cannot
be redirected to another filer (Example Ontap) or any OS filesystem.

Is there any way data from these tapes be restored/redirected to any other
 location.

 Regards
 Venkatraghavan M

[Veritas-bu] Catalog Recover - DR

2010-06-11 Thread Christopher Costa
Hello to all,

I have a current situation that I need assistance on and I am sure someone
on this DL can help me with.

We current have a 6.5.1 NBU environment with a Solaris Master Server and 6
Media Servers (a mixture of AIX, Solaris and Windows)

When we perform a DR recovery test, we take the catalog tape and perform a
Hot Catalog Recovery using the DR file, etc. The recovery of the catalog DB
works fine, the issue is that in our DR site we do not have the 6 media
servers. As we all know the Master Server will respond poorly if it cannot
communicate with the media servers configured in the EMM database and
bp.conf file.

We run the Symantec recommended commands to remove the media server entry in
the EMM database and Volmgr DB, as well as comment out these media servers
in the bp.conf.

However these media server entries still show up in the EMM database and no
matter how hard and how many times we run these tasks it never works
correctly.

At this time we are failing in our audits (RPO/RTO is 24-hours) due to the
responsiveness of the Master Server, while it continues to search for these
media servers.

Symantec says that we need to have these 6 media servers in the DR site and
does not support the methodology we are following.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thank You in advance

Chris C.
