There are certain places where NBU will insist on using the shortname for a master or media server, because that's how it's stored in EMM, even if a given host lists the master and media servers in its local configuration by FQDN. The circumstance that I've run into is when trying to perform backups of Active Directory servers with the granular recovery option enabled: the majority of System State was simply not backed up, the cause for which came down to the client retrieving the name of the master server to which to send the granular data through EMM (rather than its own config) and then being unable to contact that master server because it cannot resolve the FQDN of the master server that, from AD's point of view, lives in a different domain and, for reasons I'll never fully understand, AD has naming and security policy intertwined in such a way that it breaks things to have a given domain controller appear in a domain controlled by some other DC. So then no data got sent without enabling the client side to resolve short names into the outside domain in some way. (And, of course, I was kidding anyway, Rusty. Just so that part's clear. :^) -- Gabriel Rosenkoetter Radian Group Inc, Senior Systems Engineer gabriel.rosenkoet...@radian.biz, 215 231 1556 From: Rosenkoetter, Gabriel Sent: Wednesday, September 23, 2009 12:58 PM To: 'rusty.ma...@sungard.com'; veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu Subject: RE: [Veritas-bu] Java GUI Console Issues (RESOLUTION) ... or you could fix your broken DNS. ;^ -- Gabriel Rosenkoetter Radian Group Inc, Senior Systems Engineer gabriel.rosenkoet...@radian.biz, 215 231 1556 From: rusty.ma...@sungard.com [mailto:rusty.ma...@sungard.com] Sent: Wednesday, September 23, 2009 11:57 AM To: veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu Subject: [Veritas-bu] Java GUI Console Issues (RESOLUTION) I just completed another upgrade from 5.1 to 6.5 and ran into another issue with getting the Java GUI Console to operate. I would also recommend this as a first step for any issues you have with the Java GUI, such as some panels not working, blank screens after logging in, etc. Just wanted to put this out there in case someone else had issues as it sure is frustrating to complete an upgrade successfully, only to have problems with the Java Console. Re: [Veritas-bu] Unified Logging Gone Wild
Hi Martin, Here are some exerts from my cheat sheet. try to set a number of days to keep the logs. It's set to 5 in this case, maybe you'll need to change it to 1 or 2 ? The tech note at the bottom looks good, but only for background info on how it all works. vxlogcfg - is the answer to your issues vxlogmgr - will only solve the symptom and not the problem. Anyway, have a look below and email me any questions etc Good luck, Let me know how you go. Dominik # turn log recycling on etc To enable log recycling as the default for all NetBackup originators run: # vxlogcfg -a -p 51216 -o Default -s LogRecycle=true # ./vxlogcfg -a -p 51216 -o Default -s NumberOfLogFiles=5 Note: It will be necessary to restart NetBackup for these changes to take effect. To configure the log cleanup for PBX run the following command. # ./vxlogcfg -a -p 50936 -o 103 -s NumberOfLogFiles=5 Note: It will be necessary to restart PBX for these changes to take effect. To change the number of days to keep logs on the command line use: # /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bpconfig -kl days ### Info about this one below: (turn off OS logging duplicate) UNIX: cd /opt/VRTSicsco/bin ./vxlogcfg -a -p 50936 -o 103 -s LogToOslog=false The Veritas Private Branch Exchange (PBX) software is installed along with Veritas NetBackup 6.5.x Depending on how NetBackup is installed, PBX may log messages by default to the UNIX system logs /var/adm/messages or /var/adm/syslog, or to the Windows Event Log. This can cause additional system logging that the system administrator may not desire. The messages written to the system logs are the same as those written to the PBX logs (/opt/VRTSpbx/log on UNIX and install_path\VxPBX\log on Windows). To disable PBX logging to the system or event logs after NetBackup has been installed, enter the following commands: UNIX: cd /opt/VRTSicsco/bin ./vxlogcfg -a -p 50936 -o 103 -s LogToOslog=false Windows: cd install_path\VERITAS\VRTSicsco vxlogcfg ?a ?p 50936 ?o 103 ?s LogToOslog=false It should not be necessary to restart PBX for this setting to take effect. Re: [Veritas-bu] 6.5.2a/6.5.3 update
Thanks Tim, any updates to the fix list would be nice or atleast what you are allowed to list/update prior to the official release. tim burlowski [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent by: [EMAIL PROTECTED] 29/07/2008 07:31 AM To VERITAS-BU@mailman.eng.auburn.edu cc Subject [Veritas-bu] 6.5.2a/6.5.3 update All: I've seen a lot of posts recently on 6.5.2/6.5.2a and wanted to respond here to clear up some confusion. I just posted what I hope is some clarification on the Symantec NetBackup blog, https://forums.symantec.com/syment/blog/article?blog.id=NetBackupmessage.id=70 I generally don't like cross posting, so didn't think I should include the whole post in this email thread, I suppose I could be convinced otherwise. Please comment on the blog or here in this thread if you have any additional questions on this topic that you would like me to try and answer on the blog. -- tim burlowski ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu National Australia Bank Ltd - ABN 12 004 044 937 This email may contain confidential information. Re: [Veritas-bu] Shared memory issue with Solaris 10
Steve, You are right. When you read the latest Symantec and SUN doco on this it tells you that all previous /etc/system recommendations are now obsolete in Solaris 10. I believe I have posted this before but to recap, Sol 10 boots with a 1/4 of physical memory assigned to shared memory. All previous settings that I've seen do not come close to this on new systems. We are now talking GBs instead of MBs of old. Therefore no one should need to touch this. But here is a caveat, I have noticed that some systems running Sol 10 can experience shared memory like symptoms under heavy load. But it is not the cause, it just looks like it and the following has solved the issue, but alas, it's an /etc/system entry that SUN have tried to eliminate but is still used in Sol 10. shmsys:shminfo_shmmni=512 Should be 512 or 1024, depends on how big the system is. I recommend reading the SUN doco if you need to play around with it. But it may fix the issue if you see it. Just like below: the load increases (Schedule starts) backup start failing with error code 89 regards, Dominik Steve Quan [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent by: [EMAIL PROTECTED] 24/07/2008 01:20 AM To Dave Markham [EMAIL PROTECTED] cc VERITAS-BU@mailman.eng.auburn.edu Subject Re: [Veritas-bu] Shared memory issue with Solaris 10 We have Solaris10 master media servers here without any changes to /etc/system but I'm also interested in what others are doing. /Steve --- On Wed, 23 Jul 2008, Dave Markham wrote: I'd be interested in this too, as i'd heard you didnt need to bother with /etc/system tuning in Solaris 10.
