[Veritas-bu] NBU Certification

2009-07-07 Thread Jenner, Steven
Hi All,

I am thinking of taking the NBU certification exams 250-265 and 250-365.

I have experience of all versions of NetBackup from 3.4 to 6.5.3.1; however the
majority of my time has been spent using NBU 4.5 and 5.1 (I completed the
official VERITAS courses on those versions). I only upgraded to 6.5.3.1 three
weeks ago and as such could do with a refresher regarding the new version.

Does anyone have any advice with regard to the exams other than the practise
exam and details on the Symantec website?

I would also appreciate any study docs or websites that I could use to help me
prepare.

Finally how useful do you think these certifications are?

Thanks in advance,
Steve.

[Veritas-bu] Failing MSSQL2008 backups - Status code 2

2009-06-19 Thread Jenner, Steven
Hi All,

I have am having issues backing up a SQL 2008 cluster and wondered if anyone
could help.

My NetBackup environment consists of one Solaris 9 master server and two
Solaris 9 media servers all running NetBackup 6.5.3.1; the client is a Windows
2003 cluster with two nodes both running NetBackup 6.5.3.1.

I have configured the SQL agent as I have for other SQL clusters I back up
(admittedly not SQL2008) but I keep getting status code 2 failures when the
backup is ran from the NetBackup schedule.

The following is also present in the dbclient log on the active node following
an unsuccessful backup:

18:52:29.556 [6132.4844] <1> CGlobalInformation::CreateDSN: CONTINUATION: -
Component not found in the registry
18:52:29.556 [6132.4844] <16> CDBbackmain::LoadUserLogin: ERR - Internal error.
See the dbclient log for more information.
18:52:29.556 [6132.4844] <32> CDBbackmain::LoadUserLogin: ERR - Error 1 has
been returned from GetCurrentDSN

If I run the backup script manually from the NetBackup Database Extension - GUI
the backup is successful.

I have also added the virtual SQL server name and IP address to the /etc/hosts
file on the master and both media servers.

Any advice gratefully received.

Steve.

Hi All,

Thanks for all of the responses they are very helpful.

My upgrade has been pushed back to next weekend following some catalog
inconsistencies found via NBCC that I am now working on with Symantec support.

I will let you know how the upgrade goes and if there are any issues.

[Veritas-bu] Client compatability with 6.5.3

2009-02-18 Thread Jenner, Steven
Hi All,

I am finally looking at upgrading my existing NetBackup installation
from 5.1 MP7 to 6.5.3 but have some concerns about backing up some old
clients.

Basically I have to back up external customer servers (which I don't
necessarily have any admin rights to) some of which are running old
versions of software which are not officially supported on the 6.5
compatibility matrix.

My questions therefore is, can anyone confirm if the following OS
versions (copied below) can be backed up by 6.5.3 and if so what version
of client software they have installed?

Windows NT

Linux 2.2 kernel

Solaris 7

Also can you determine the patch level of the OS by the reply NetBackup
gives when interrogating the client i.e. does 'Windows2000 5' relate to
a specific patch level?

Thanks in advance,

Steve.

Hi Marianne,

The backup servers are running 5.1MP7 whilst the client is on 5.1.

Running the bpclntcmd from the client to both media servers is also
successful.

As mentioned everything looks ok but the backup will not complete
successfully.

Have you tried to telnet from client to vnetd on media server(s)?
Have you tried bpclntcmd from client to media servers using -hn and -ip?

Hi All,

I have added a new client server to my backup schedule and its backups
are failing with status code 54 (timed out connecting to client). I can
confirm the following on the client:

1. The client can ping the master server and both media servers and
vice versa

2. Both client daemons are listening on the server (vnetd and bpcd)

3. I can successfully telnet to the client from the master server
and both media servers via the bpcd port (though if I try unreserved
ports the connection fails)

4. I get the expected results running the bpclntcmd command (see below)

bash-2.05# ./bpclntcmd -hn hachiman1.cust.mgmt.internal host

I have tried changing the client's config to use vnetd at which point
the backup still fails but with a status code 58 error instead.

The customer's server is running a firewall (WatchGuard x750e core

Any ideas what the issue could be?

Thanks in advance,

[Veritas-bu] Scripts to notify of backup failures

2008-11-26 Thread Jenner, Steven
Hi all,

I want to be able to send automatic emails out to notify when a backup
has failed i.e. anything other than status code 0. I have looked at the
script mail_bp_reports and that would work however it sends me all
backup status codes.

As scripting is not my forte I was wondering if anyone had a
pre-prepared script that they would be willing to share, or could point
me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance,

[Veritas-bu] Problems backing up ESX

2008-11-20 Thread Jenner, Steven
Hi All,

Does anyone have instructions on backing up an ESX server (running
version 3.5 update 1 (3.5.0,82663). I have installed the Linux client
and can back the server up but this does not capture the necessary vmdk
files.

I realise that I probably have to do something on the ESX side of things
but have little VM experience so would be grateful if someone could
point me in the right direction.

My NetBackup environment is running v5.1MP7.

Even if this worked, I wouldn't trust it on something as serious as a database.
What happens when it doesn't work and you can't get support from anyone?
Until you can upgrade, would you be able to dump the database to a flat file on
disk with a Maintenance Job or some third party SQL backup app (Litespeed,
etc.) and then have NBU pick up the dump as a normal file?

[Veritas-bu] Windows2003 backup running slowly

2008-08-05 Thread Jenner, Steven
Hi,

Recently one of the Windows2003 servers that I back up has started to
run very slowly (under 50KB per second). I have checked the duplex
settings on both the client and the switch and both are set at
100MB/full duplex.

Checking the client server all settings look OK and the customer
confirms nothing has changed on the server. I have checked the server
whilst backups are running and it is under little load and the network
card that the backup system connects to is dedicated for backup traffic
only. Other servers within the customer's solution on the same network
are backing up OK so I am pretty sure the issue is with the client.

Has anyone seen similar issues or have any suggestions on additional
things to check?

The clients and NetBackup servers are all running version 5.1.

Thanks in advance,

Steve.

[Veritas-bu] Backing up CIFs shares

2008-06-26 Thread Jenner, Steven
Hi,

I have come across a problem that I am hoping someone here can assist me
with.

I am running a NetBackup environment with one master server and two
media servers all running v5.1MP6 (and on Solaris9) these are backing up
250+ clients which are a mixture of Windows, Linux and Solaris and some
MSSQL clients; again the clients are running 5.1MP6.

I also have a NetApp filer supplying NAS and San storage to some of the
aforementioned clients.

So, my question is how do I set up the NetBackup agent to capture the
data that is held within a CIFs share that is being presented to a
Windows client? Is this possible with a standard client license?

Backing up the Windows client using the ALL LOCAL DRIVES directive and
selecting the Backup network drives box under attributes does not appear
to capture the data.

Thanks in advance,

Steve.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Netbackup & VCB over NFS

2008-06-09 Thread Jenner, Steven
I’ve encountered the same issue as I am currently evaluating both NetBackup and
vRanger Pro (http://www.vizioncore.com/vrangerpro.html ) for backing up VMware
environments.

From my VMware guys I understand that the latest release of VCB now supports
NFS and vRanger have confirmed that the only reason their software doesn’t work
is because they haven’t yet upgraded their plug-in rather than a lack of
support for NFS in VCB.

I am still waiting on Symantec to confirm if this will now be supported with
the latest VCB version.

Does anyone out there have any more info?

Hi,

I’m doing a test setup with Netbackup 6.5.1 and ESX.

I want to setup VCB backups with VM hosts on Fibre, iSCSI, and NFS.

Fibre & iSCSI works great … but when I want to backup the VM Hosts that are

I get an error 156.

We installed the NFS tools on the VCB proxy and we can mount the host with the

Does anybody know if VM hosts on NFS are supported by Netbackup?

If so, are there special things I should keep in mind?

Thanks in advance.

[Veritas-bu] Backing up Virtual Machines using NetBackup

2008-06-04 Thread Jenner, Steven
Hi All,

We are implementing a VMWare environment with a mixture of Windows and
Linux virtual servers. We currently backup our servers using NetBackup
5.1MP6 and would like to use it to backup the virtual machines and be
able to restore both entire virtual machines and individual files within
them.

I know you can utilize the standard client and backup the virtual
machine as you would normally and you can use the VMWare client and
backup the necessary vmdk files in order to restore the virtual machine.
But ideally I would like to use one client to backup the virtual
environment in it's entirety but also have the ability to restore
individual files within a virtual server.

Is this possible?

If it isn't available with the current version we are using (5.1MP6) is
it possible with any later versions?

If not how are other people backing up their virtual environments?

Apologies for the list of questions but I have little exposure to VMWare
and would appreciate any pointers.

Thanks in advance,

Steve.

I know you can redirect a restore of a SQL DB to a different host but do
not know whether restoring to a different version of SQL is possible.
Has anyone done this and if so were there any issues?

Any information gratefully received.

The NetBackup environment is running on v5.1MP6.

Thanks in advance,

Steve.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Backiing up FreeBSD v6.2

2007-10-19 Thread Jenner, Steven
Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies; the issue was indeed to do with system library
files or rather the lack of system library files.

Checking what library files bpcd used showed a number were missing

ldd /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bpcd

This had the following results:

libkvm.so.2 => not found
libstdc++.so.3 => not found
lib.so.2 => not found
libc.so.4 => not found

In order to rectify the above errors the necessary compatibility
libraries were installed and the backups re-ran successfully.

Thanks again,

Steve.

NB 6.x can backup FreeBSD 6.x but not 7.x. I suspect the latest 5.x can
backup
NB 6.x also. You may need to install the misc/compat5x port. ldd(1) will
be your
friend with checking libraries etc.

Please paste any errors you are getting, and the output of:

[Veritas-bu] Backiing up FreeBSD v6.2

2007-10-17 Thread Jenner, Steven
Hi,

I have a customer who was running a Redhat Linux server but who has
recently changed to a FreeBSD environment running version 6.2; my
NetBackup environment is running Enterprise v 5.1MP6.

Checking the relevant compatibility matrix I can see that FreeBSD
version 6.0 is covered by v5.1MP6 and my customer believes that this
means that FreeBSD v6.2 should work also (their comments are copied
below)

'The version installed is 6.2 which is the latest version. Although this

is not on the compatibility matrix I would imagine it would be backwards

compatible with 6.0 as it is only a minor version with bug fixes etc.'

I have little experience of FreeBSD therefore cannot ascertain how true
the statement above is; therefore my question is, can FreeBSD v6.2 be
backed up by NetBackup5.1MP6 and if not can it be backed up by any
version of NetBackup?

So far I have installed the NetBackup FreeBSD4.5 client software onto
the client but I am getting status code 54 errors and I believe it is
probably because the applied version of FreeBSD is not covered.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Steve.

Re: [Veritas-bu] migrating Legato images from tape to NetBackup

2007-07-06 Thread Jenner, Steven

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all of the responses, they pretty much confirm what I
thought.

I think we may just leave a scaled down Legato system in place which can
be shut down when the last tape expires in seven years.

Steve.

I think this also applies to other backup software (other than BEWS).
Had
one client asking for the same thing, migrate their EDM (an old emc
backup) tapes to NetBackup. But if would be the case - restore then
backup
again to NBU - it would really eat up a lot of resources.
They decided not to take that path, instead they opted to maintain their

old system to cater for the restore requests. :)

[Veritas-bu] migrating Legato images from tape to NetBackup

2007-07-05 Thread Jenner, Steven
Hi,

I am looking at consolidating two disparate backup systems one running
Legato the other NetBackup.

As I come from the NetBackup School I would like to ensure the new
system runs on NetBackup; however I have an issue with archived data
held on tape that was backed up using Legato. The other team have a
retention policy of seven years therefore existing backup images created
with the Legato system are not due to expire any time soon and could be
called upon for a restore at any time.

Is there a way to migrate the data held on the Legato media to the
NetBackup system, other than manually restoring the data to a server
from the Legato tapes then backing up with NetBackup?

We are talking about several hundred tapes therefore the manual process
detailed above would be extremely time consuming.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Steve.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Status code 42 - SQL2005 backup using NetBackup 5.1MP6

2007-05-11 Thread Jenner, Steven
Hi Guys,

Thanks for the suggestions, the server and client are both running at
100Mb full duplex and the servers aren't live yet so nothing else is
really using resource also no AV is loaded on the client machines.

I will try to increase the timeout limit as per Glen's earlier
suggestion to see if that makes a difference as at the minute they are
set at the default level.

Regards,

Steve.

What Network speed are you running at? Also, is this Server doing
anything else at the time of the backup? As a test turn off any AV that
may be running while you perform the backup

Hi,

I have a strange failure that hopefully someone out there knows
the resolution to.

I am trying to perform 'hot' SQL backups on several new SQL
installations in my environment but some of the DB's back up ok whilst
others fail with status code 42 (network read failed). For example on
one server the backup of the master and model DBs both fail with status
code 42 whilst the msdb and a custom DBs work. However this is not
always the case as with other backups the model and msdb DB's have
failed and master and custom have worked.

The client machines are running NetBackup 5.1MP6, SQL2005 and
Windows 2003; whilst the NetBackup servers are running on Solaris 9 with
5.1MP6.

I am able to backup other SQL2005 installations set up as above
but the SQL install on the new servers has been set up by an external
resource and I am not sure whether the issue could be something to do
with the SQL config.

Any suggestions?

Steve.

Hi Guys,

Apologies for the late response but I have been on holiday over Easter.

Simon; Jonathon is correct in his assumption and apologies if my earlier
mail was unclear.

SQL 2005 clustering and mirroring are two distinct concepts. Mirroring
doesn't utilize a virtual server and shared storage; instead a database
is
stored on one server and copied to another, providing a standby copy of
the
database that can service clients in the event of a server failure.

As far as I can see the 'hot' backup element should be the same as
backing
up a stand alone client the only question is whether it is advisable to
backup up both servers (the primary and mirror) or just to backup the
primary and perform a restore with move operation in the event of
failure.

I'm guessing I will just load the SQL agent on both servers and perform
daily full backups on both just for ease.

Thanks for your assistance on this matter.

Regards,

Steve.

That's not how I read it from the originators post.

If its in a cluster scenario, and there are 2 nodes, then as long as
there
is a configured virtual server name that NetBackup can connect to and
perform the backups, it will not care what node it is hosted on.

But is it Mirror Steven?

Good shot Simon, but I think this is a data mirror (as opposed to
cluster?)
In that case, they have a SQL server configured to instantly replicate
any
changes of a database to another SQL server that is not attached to the
same
physical storage. The mirror is more than likely read only. The last
time
I had a configuration similar to this we backed up both. I don't think
you
need to through. Its a fairly strait forward process should the live
data
server go down, to move that database back or make the read only copy
live.
I haven't played with SQL 2005 but I managed several databases like this
with SQL 2000. Generally speaking we used data mirrors to take
processes
with high loads (huge queries, backups etc) off the production server.

only
one 'live' db but depending on whether it has failed over it could be

There appears to be little info in the documentation and my SQL
knowledge is limited so I'm unsure of the best way to proceed.

Thanks in advance,

Steve.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Unable to restore DBs on SQL2005 cluster

2007-03-22 Thread Jenner, Steven
Hi,

Apologies for not responding to some of the replies but I can confirm
that the issue has now been resolved. It was due to an issue with the
Full Text Catalogs on the DB. By renaming the catalog or removing
entirely I was able to restore the DB using the same batch script as
previously used. Alternatively I could provide a new name and location
for the full text catalog as described below:

Etrack Incident = ET383843 ET405561

Description:
This patch enables general backup and restore support for SQL Server
2005.
Since this patch is released. New SQL Server features that require
changes
to the SQL backup API or the SQL language are not supported until
NetBackup
6.0. The minimal level of SQL Server 2005 supported by this patch is
the
   June 2005 Community Technical Preview.

Additional Notes:
Consistent with new functionality provided under SQL Server 2005,
this patch
does support inclusion of full text catalog with database backups.
However,
there are two restrictions placed on SQL Server 2005 full text
catalog backups.

   (1) If the SQL Server 2005 database contains a full text catalog,
then the
backup will not be backed up using a snapshot method. If an advanced
client
policy is selected for backup, then the database will be backed up
using the
   standard backup method.

   (2) A database move attempted on a SQL Server 2005 database that
contains a
full text catalog, will fail with a message such as the following:

   DBMS MSG - <[Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]File
   'sysft_HerCatalog' cannot be restored to 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft
SQL
Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\FTData\HerCatalog'. Use WITH MOVE to identify a
valid
   location for the file.>

This indicates that SQL Server 2005 expects to be provided a new
location
for the full text catalog directory. To resolve this issue, update
the move
script by providing a valid directory for the full text catalog. For
example, to specify that the full text catalog named HerCatalog
should be
placed in directory "c:\NewLoc\HerCatalog\" provide the following
lines in
   the move script:

   MOVE "sysft_HerCatalog"
   TO "C:\NewLoc\HerCatalog\"

After this update has been made, rerun the move script to carry out
the move
   operation.

Thanks again for all of the replies and assistance with this one.

Cheers,

Steve.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Unable to restore DBs on SQL2005 cluster

2007-03-20 Thread Jenner, Steven
Hi Dennis,

Thanks for the reply.

I can confirm that the directory I am attempting to restore the date to
does exist and is a resource located on the cluster.

Checking both the bphdb and dbclient logs yields no additional
information. Unfortunately the SQL cluster config was implemented by and
is supported by a third party (my customer) and I purely supply managed
backups therefore identifying if this is a MSSQL configuration issue is
proving difficult.

Any additional suggestions much appreciated.

Regards,

Steve.

Hi

2 things you can check:

Make sure that the directory you are restoring into exists, eg.
'g:\FTData\sysfttestCMS, 'g:\FTData. The directories cannot be created
by the restore.

IF SQL is in the cluster, and the G:\ drive is an alternate location to
the original, then G:\drive has to be a resource in the cluster as well.

Also check the bphdb, and dbclient logs.

as to where to start after working on this for several days.

I would be grateful if anyone had any ideas or instructions regarding
restoring SQL 2005 clusters.

My environment is as follows:

Veritas Master & Media servers & client running Enterprise v5.1MP6

Thanks in advance,

Steve.
