Thanks Justin,
I found the problem. The media server can not resolve the fully qualified host
name of the master server (EMM server).

Hey guys

I don't normally work with Backup Exec so I am not sure how to enter a recently
purchased serial number into an evaluation copy of Backup Exec 12.x to make it
a licensed copy without removing any of the existing settings? It attempts to
re-install and not sure if this is going to overwrite the settings. Any

It does not look like this tape has expired. The expiration date is 3/10/2009.
Check the retention from your policies (backup classes in 3.4). It looks like 4
month retention to me. The expiration date is from the last image put on the
tape.

You can run bpexpdate to command to force expire the tape, even though I don't
recommend you do it.

We just experienced a rash of these on MP5 -- basically, there were some
bugs in MP5 which caused intermittent image corruption. bpdbm will hang
during cleanup or database backups, and database backups failed with
status 41. Fun times, let me assure you!

We ran through about 5 corrupted images in a week (on images that were
expired), and then upgraded to MP6.

We we had to do was run an lsof, see exactly which files bpdbm is hung
up on, kill those bpdbm pids, and delete the files in question.
Everything was clean after that.

hth,

  Solaris 10, Netbackup 6.0 MP5 Master server.

My bpdbm process is acting wacky (I think...I've never noticed this
behavior before). I've actually got 14 bpdbm processes running, but
also 38 active jobs currently. The logs for my in
 netbackup/logs/bpdbm are very large...around 2 gigs per day's log
file. I'm seeing such inforation in there as:

  image_by_file: processing file

 /usr/openv/netbackup/db/images/hostname/115700/hostname-Oracle
 -B
  ackup_1157475027_UBAK
  expdate: no match for

 /usr/openv/netbackup/db/images/hostname/1203000/hoststname-Ora
 cl
  e-Backup_1203468053_INCR

  by bp.conf file has:
  VERBOSE = 1
  ENABLE_ROBUST_LOGGING = NO

But the thing is, I've noticed some information in my bpdbm logs
talking about Informix backups that we haven't done in almost 2 years

since we've moved to Oracle. The backups are long since expired...so

why is Netbackup processing those files?

On my master server, I'm running Solaris 10 on a v440 w/ 16 gigs of
 RAM,
  4 CPU's running @ 1593 Mhz. I do have a large netbackup domain...60

Media SAN Media servers, ~30 clients...but my Master server sees
constant 100% cpu utilization. The Server slows down, and locks up.
Could this be related to bpdbm checking all the files in the catalog,

and spawning so many bpdbm processes?

Re: [Veritas-bu] Successful NDMP Backups Missing Data

2008-03-14 Thread Koping Wang
Martin,
1. I don't have experience with NDMP backup, but I know NBU6.0 MP5 is
not a good service pack. Last time NBU could not open compressed catalog
after I patched to MP5, I end up unpatched and move back to MP4.

2. If you want backup through NFS, make sure the NFS connection is on a
separate NIC from your backup NIC, otherwise your backup will be very
very slow.

If you notice, all of the red entries are less than they should be. The
full backup qty gets incrementally bigger each week with the exception
of the red failures. The 316GB backup was a failed robotic controller
so I expected that but the other three backups were status 0 in
Netbackup. I've got three sites all simmilarly configured and two sites
(this one and another) are showing this same issue. One intresting
point about this particular host is that the same directories are
missing from all three successful failed backups. We've got a ticket
open with Sun, as Netbackup seems to think its a filer issue. (We
agree.) We've had issues in the past with super long directory paths on
this NAS device, maybe this is simmilar.

Personally, I'm appauled that there seems to be no better communication
between the filer and Netbackup about the backup status and that NBU
just assumes everything's 100% hunky dory. We use the activty monitor
and BPDBJOBS in a NUMBER of scripts to monitor completion. I think its
unreasonable to assume the storage guys need to check their filer logs
every week to make sure their backups are complete. This may be an
excuse for me to write the script I've been planning that measures job
success on how much data was backed up (compared to the trend.) For
this weekend we're going to backup the data via NFS mount on another
server. Stoopid NAS.

I love this job... /sigh

You might want to verify your policy selections included everything
and also that you don't have an exclude list specification on the client
that would have made it skip certain things.

It would be very bad indeed if NBU gave a status 0 for backups that
didn't backup exactly what they were told to backup. My first
suspicion would be that this didn't occur - that either its not in the
selections for the policy or it was excluded due an exclude list.

Of course there are other things that could cause this - e.g. do not
cross mount points, don't backup NFS etc... that might have been set on
the policy by default.

Don,

With the release of OS X 10.5, Apple removed all functionality of inetd
(and others) and replaced it with its launchd process. Below is a link
to read more information about launchd. With the removal of inetd,
the bpcd and vnetd process no longer listen on their respective ports
based on a 10.4 config.

http://www.mactech.com/articles/mactech/Vol.21/21.06/launchd/index.html

At last check, Symantec currently doesn't provide support for 10.5.
They will have to create plist entries for the NBU client processes to
replace the /etc/inetd.conf definitions.

[Veritas-bu] Upgrade Netbackup 5.1MP4 to 6.0 - Solaris

2007-09-26 Thread Koping Wang
Hi,
I am upgrading Netbackup 5.1 MP4 to 6.0. I got a problem: My Netbackup
is running Solaris 9
When I remove the old VRTSnetbp, 'pkgrm VRTSnetbp'. At the end, I got
Removal of VRTSnetbp partially failed.
So when I install Netbackup 6.0, I got the following messages:

---
The following old package is currently installed on your
system and should be removed prior to an upgrade:

VRTSnetbp

***
It is highly recommended that older packages be removed before doing an
upgrade.
***

Do you want to exit this script so you can remove packages now? [y,n]
(y)

--
Should I just answer no:, and continue?

Thanks
Koping

[Veritas-bu] Force cleaning catalog files?

2007-05-30 Thread Koping Wang

Hi,
Netbackup does not compact/clean catalog files until all backup jobs has
down. Does anyone know how to manually start the process?

Thanks

 Greetings,

 I am running NBU 5.1 Mp6 on a Solaris 10 11/06 system. I created a
ZFS pool with two file systems in it. When I backup the file systems
the only thing that gets backed up are the directory entries and not the
files underneath them.

I googled, read the Veritas documentation, contacted support and still
can not get an answer. Is anybody backing up ZFS files and can point me
to gotchas?

 Thanks.

RE:[Veritas-bu] Netbackup PureDisk vs datadomain / Diligent..

2006-05-18 Thread Koping Wang
Hi,
We are also looking in D2D solution which work with netbackup. We are
going to make decision between DataDomain and Dilligent. This is my
thought about these two products.
Dillignet:
Pro: VTL - low impact on configuration.
faster - it use fiber channel.
more add on functions - there are some good add-on functions you
can buy from diligent.
Con: costly - Software: Netbackup VTL license, Diligent license, Redhat
RHEL 64-bit license.
Hardware: 64 bit AMD server, disk storage. If you
don't have san, you might need a fiber switch.
Datadomain:
Pro:Simple, no software license needed.
Con: Not expendable, if you run out of space, you screw up.

Netbackup PureDisk: PureDisk is like a separate software from Netbackup.
You can have a lot of choice if you want to look into different D2D
products. PureDisk only support windows client.

2006-02-23 Thread Koping Wang
Title: Disk backup products for NBU - DataDomain, Diligent

Does anybody use Diligent Protectire or DataDomain DD400 series. How it goes? I am not seeking comparison of these two products. I would like to know from your experience. Do they meet your expectations? Any problem? How is their support and service?
