[Veritas-bu] Logs stripping

2010-06-08 Thread Matthews, Gary (GSD UK Production Services business)
Hi,

We're just putting in a new NBU 7 installation and going OK so far J But
we have a prerequisite that we cannot send any IP addresses or server
names in any info we have to send to support - so was wondering if any
one has any scripts that will strip these out of the log files? We're
running on Solaris. TIA

[Veritas-bu] Library

2009-11-03 Thread Matthews, Gary (GSD UK Production Services business)
Hi,
Just after a few opinions. I've been asked to put in a new SAN with NBU
from scratch. The library's a fairly hefty box, a sun SL3000. It's only
got 2 fibre drives at the moment for testing but will have several more
going live. I was wondering what would be the best way to go
connectivity wise - all going through 1 switch, 2 switches on 1 fabric
or a switch on both fabrics?

TIA

Gary

[Veritas-bu] SQL Backup checking

2009-09-16 Thread Matthews, Gary (GSD UK Production Services business)
Hi,
This is probably very simple but not having done it before I thought I'd
ask the experts :-) We've got a windows infrastructure running nbu 6.
All we backup is flat files, with a mix of network, VSS and clariion
scripted snapshots. Our SQL servers run their own backups to backup
drives and then we back them off. Up to know it's just been a scheduled
NBU job but the SQL databases have grown and now the backups overlap.
Rather than just move the backup later, thought I'd ask if there's
something cleverer we can do to check if the SQL backups have finished?
Something ina bpstart script ?

TIA

[Veritas-bu] Licensing Question

2009-03-24 Thread Matthews, Gary (GSD UK Production Services business)
Hi ,

I'm hoping someone can verify a license question. We're setting up an
environment with Vmware - several esx machines , 2 w2k media/vcb servers
and a windows master cluster ( 6.5.3) Symantec have said we need an
enterprise license per esx machine, and I'm just wondering why! If it's
vcb doing the work, and we're communicating just through 1 VC server I
would have thought at mose 3, one per vcb and maybe 1 for the VC . How
are you guys licensing it?

TIA

[Veritas-bu] Shared drive problem

2008-11-13 Thread Matthews, Gary (GSD UK Production Services business)
Hi,

Hoping someone can help me. We've got a new system recently put in, its
been fine until recently - had to reboot the media servers and have had
a problem since then. We've got an AIX master ( no tapes) a W2K3 Media
( also a VCB server) and an AIX media server , all with NBU 6.5.2a
installed. After rebooting the first media server to run gets a tape
drive no problem and subsequent jobs run ok. On the other media server
the first job sits there with a status of 'waiting for shared tape drive
scan to stop'

Any ideas?

TIA

Just getting to grips with vmware/vcb/nbu (6.5.2) and setting up

requirement on one of the backups to exclude the D: drive on a

that way, so thought ok, create a policy with specific drives rather
than all local, but there doesn't seem to be that option - does
anyone
know how I can exclude a prticular drive on a vmware client/vcb

[Veritas-bu] Non Cluster failover

2008-07-28 Thread Matthews, Gary (GSD UK Production Services business)
Hi, As part of my first forays into NBU , as well as trying to get VCB
working :-) I'm also trying to set up failover. Trouble is for this
system, our day-to-day support team have specified they do not want a
clustered master. Not being that experienced in NBU or AIX it's a nice
big learning curve for me :-) We'll be running AIX and NBU 6.5 so I
was thinking maybe have /usr/openv as it's own LUN on the primary
master and a /usr/openv LUN on the secondary . Install on the primary
and install on the secondary . Then stop the services on the secondary ,
and set up a mirror from the primary, overwriting the secondary ( we'll
be using DS8K's & metro-mirroring) then in a dr, remount the secondary
. Would this work and what configs changes would be required eg to get
emmserver working etc The set up will be two sites, AIX with a media
server in both sites , and possibly a w2k3 media server in both sites
too , master at one and failover master at the other

Re: [Veritas-bu] VCB - Fail to get VM server Info

2008-07-25 Thread Matthews, Gary (GSD UK Production Services business)
Hi Jonathan , what version of NBU were you using ? According to the
docs on what's new in 6.5.2 it says :-

Connect using port number

Unless the port number was changed on the VMware server, no port

specification is required. If the Connect using port number box is
checked,

deselect it. VMware Consolidated Backup software determines the port.

I got a similar error and had to call Symantec for support. Are you
looking for a VM Host or the Virtual Center? If you are pointing to the
Virtual Center you have to change the port under Credentials -->
Virtuaql Machine Servers to port 443 to connect. The default 902 is
only for communication with virtual hosts. It's kind of silly, but I
couldn't find this documented anywhere either.

[Veritas-bu] netbackup, VSS & Clariion

2007-04-13 Thread Matthews, Gary
Hi,

Have a bit of a quandary. We have a CX380 Flare22 for one of our
customers. We're currently backing up specific drives with Netbackup 6
MP4 integrating Advanced/offhost client and VSS using the EMC VSS
hardware provider. All clients are W2K Snapping. There is one drive that
we're successfully backing up on a nightly basis - Netbackup/VVS calls
creates a snapshot/session of the LUN and presents it to the media
server, putting it in the storage group and mounting it for backup.
Yesterday the customer requested that the drive be backed up/copied on a
regular basis during the day in case of corruption. Ideal candidate for
snapping I thought. So I've created a Snapshot of this LUN and scripts
that run every two hours creating a session and removing old sessions so
that we keep 3 sessions.

Unfortunately last night the backup run and added the backup snapshot
into the storage group rather than the VSS snapshot, this of course
failed to mount then.

I've thought of maybe scripting a pre and post batch scripts to the
NetBackup job that deletes and recreates the backup snapshot but was
wondering if there's another way around it, and why does it pick up that
snapshot as opposed to the VSS one? TIA Gary

Steve,

I'm also trying to get VCB backups of my ESX farm working and would love to
have a copy of those docs you were working on, if at all possible.

I'm also looking at ESX Ranger to do something similar. Has anyone compared
the ESX Ranger to the VCB capabilities of VMware?

Thanks!

 Subject: [Veritas-bu] VMWare ESX Backup

Greetings All,

I recently installed VMWare ESX Server 3.0.1 and I have several virtual
machines. Now I have NB agent 6.0 MP4 running on the actual virtual machines
and I can back up directly from NetBackup. But I did some reading about
Consolidated Backup but I didn't understand how to set it up. There's something
about a proxy server intermediating between VMWare and NetBackup. My SAN is
currently being installed but it will take about another 4 weeks. Is this a
necessity?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Trying to understand the steps needed to recover in a DR situation with
NBU 6.0 MP4 in a windows only environment - hope all you knowledgeable
experts can help me :-) The set up is this - two sites, a
primary/production and a disaster/test. The master is a cluster with a
node in each site. We have a media server and a library san attached in
both sites with the libraries accessible by both media servers. We
currently run full backups weekly and cumulatives daily to a staging
disk which is large enough to hole one set of weeklies. Om a Monday we
duplicate the fulls to the offsite library. The disks themselves are
replicated between sites. So we should always have a full and the
latest cumulative available - So we have the tapes in the library, and
we can mount the replicated disk on the other media server - how then
do we use them to restore?

TIA

Gary

[Veritas-bu] encryption and offhost

2007-02-19 Thread Matthews, Gary
A quick query. We've been asked to look at encryption for one of our
systems. The client that needs encryption is currently being backed up
with vss/clariion snapshot integration to off-host backup on the media
server. In this case what would be the process for encryption and
restoring from those backups ,? Should encryption be set on the
client, media server or both?

TIA

We had this a while back, Windows server 2003 and NBU6.0 MP4. Though in
our case we were using VSS and there were old entries being left behind
- wmic>shadowcopy showed shadows there when there shouldn't be,
shadowcopy delete removed them and the backup worked ok

Hi Ed
Yes we done this prior to posting on the list - everything is up to the
same
standard as all the other clients.
There is also nothing unusual about the client. And as mentioned, the
client
can safely get backed up in any other policy - but complains of a U:\
Drive
and created a status 71 in this one policy.

Any other ideas Ed; appreciated :-)

I've seen this with an old client - it's an old, old NetBackup client
bug. Upgrade the client to the latest version and your problem should
go away.

[Veritas-bu] newbi script question

2007-01-25 Thread Matthews, Gary
Hi,

We're running a new system , w2k3 & nbu 6.0 mp4, utilizing VSS
integrating with a Clariion and Advanced client/off host backup onto the
media server. Now and again the snapshot will fail (rc 156) and needs a
manual cleanup on the clariion of the snapshots/sessions before it'll
work again . Rather than give our operators full access to the disks,
I've set up policies that backup the disks over the network instead - is
it possible to set this up so that if the job fails with a 156 then the
equivalent network backup runs/ I assume I have to use bpend_notify to
kick off a bpstart command? Can this be from the master or does it have
to be on the client? And if so is it on the client or the 'offhost
client' ie the media server? First time I've looked at post batch
scripting any help would be great.

Cheers

Gary
