Hi Luciano,

I think the way you are doing that backup is not the best one, the best option 
for huge amount of data is to avoid using the network, and use the SAN 
infrastructure.

To accomplish that, I'd suggest you to make a split mirror backup of your SAP 
and mount the mirror copy on the media server.

In our enviroment with this architecture the bottleneck is the LTO4 drive (120 
MB/s), using 2 MPX per drive.

I have a problem with one backup, this backup now have more than 10 Tb, it's a 
SAP base backup, my problem is because this backup take more than 36 hours to 
finish, the throughput is not bad, its do 4 jobs with 15Mb/s per job totally 
60Mb/s but my backup window is only 13 hours for 06:00 PM to 07:00 AM and I 
don't know what I have to do to take this backup more fast. Below the 
description for my environment.

I have one NBU master Server Solaris and 3 media servers with NBU 6.5.2 in all 
servers and clients.

One media solaris attached to a SL500 library with 7 drives One media solaris 
attached to the same SL500 and a VTL with 24 virtual drives One media AIX 
attached to a VTL with 48 virtual drives

The AIX media server is on a P595 and these is the same machine than the server 
I need to backup, there is a Shared Ethernet Adapter controlled by a Virtual IO 
server to shared all the network card for this P595 to create the backup 
network.

I tested these backup with all the media servers, VTL and SL500 and it's the 
same throughput.
I tested with 2 jobs, 4 jobs, 9 jobs and it's the same throughput.
Tested multiplexing, the same throughput.
Online and offline backups, the same throughput.

I have a SAP client to do this backup, and I think the AIX media server is the 
best to do this because it's the same machine, and my question is, there is 
other way to do this backup more fast?

The exam is not difficult, if you are used with pre 6.0 versions, you should 
get a good look to the inter-process documentation, becouse it changed a lot 
from pre 6.x to 6x.

Hi All,

 I am thinking of taking the NBU certification exams 250-265 and 250-365.

I have experience of all versions of NetBackup from 3.4 to 6.5.3.1; however the 
majority of my time has been spent using NBU 4.5 and 5.1 (I completed the 
official VERITAS courses on those versions). I only upgraded to 6.5.3.1 three 
weeks ago and as such could do with a refresher regarding the new version.

Does anyone have any advice with regard to the exams other than the practise 
exam and details on the Symantec website?

I would also appreciate any study docs or websites that I could use to help me 
prepare.

Finally how useful do you think these certifications are?

You can use the 32 bit client, you just need to install the lib 
compat-libstdc++-296-2.96-138, and it will work fine.

Wonder if I can get some advice. My original NBU CD's have gone astray and I am 
trying to source the Red Hat 5 64-bit edition client software for use on 
NetBackup 5.1.

Does anyone know how to obtain the software or download via Symantec ?

I cannot even be sure it was part of the NBU 5.1 Suite (being the 64-bit), but 
any advice on this matter is very welcome.

We have a Exchange 07 cluster that we're backing up using CCR and backing up 
the passive node using VSS.
We finally got some successfully backups, and now we want to test some restores 
before we start moving
Live mailboxes to this cluster. When we do the restore we get the following 
error.

ERR-error writing Exchange object:Microsoft Information Store\First Storage 
Group\Error:BEDS 0XE000FED1: A failure occurred querying the Writer status.

Has anyone seen this and how do you get the restore to work?

Thanks for the response but what I am looking for is a listing of all the 
client names that are still in the Image.db that have been decommissioned from 
our environment. So they are no longer in any of our active or inactive 
policies but because we backed them up within the last year should still have 
information regarding that server in the database.

The restore from unix to linux platform in a 5.1 enviroment, is easy, it is 
just follow the DR procedure from the Troubleshooting manual. We usualy do that 
in our DR enviroment, becouse the hardware we have to test is Linux.

In 6.0 becouse of sybase we didn't find a solution for that.

Officialy this is not supported by veritas, just with the assistence of 
Symantec Consulting.   

About the hostname, it has to be the same.

I currently run a Netbackup 5.1MP6 installation off of a Sun E450 that's 
getting long in the tooth.  As part of investigating my options for upgrading 
both the HW and SW, I'm considering moving the master to Linux both for cost 
and maintenance reasons (there's very few Solaris systems left on our network). 
 One option i'm considering is the possibility of migrating the master to Linux 
first, and then worrying about Netbackup upgrades later, so that the concern 
about hardware can be eliminted.

I've read that changing the master name is generally hard if not impossible to 
do, and that you can't move between operating platforms (UNIX & Windows) 
easily, but what about between UNIX (Solaris 9) and Linux (RHEL, probably 5)?  
Could I build a linux box named the same as the current Solaris master, install 
Netbackup 5.1 and MP6, and then do a complete catalog restore/copy from the 
current master?  I know I'd have to reconfigure the tape drives & robot, but 
that's fairly simple to do.  My main concern is that if we do go to a new 
platform, I don't want to lose the backup history and ease of restoring what we 
currently have on tape.

Also, I know it's not considered a good/easy thing to do, but is there any way 
at all other than bringing Symantec Consulting Services to rename a master 
server?  If so, that would go a long way towards resolving some of the other 
issues we face...

In the windows interface, you can Copy and Paste the policies. When pasting, 
select the "Policies" Item, if you select any policy, you will overwrite it.

I don't need to bring in the catalog ... I just want the same policies and

Did u set "Backup Network Drives" at policies' properties ?


You can simple put the "\\otherserver\sharename" at your policy's include list 
of the server. 

With that you won't need "Backup Network Drives" option. 

I think both client machines must belong to the same domain.

I ran into this today.  Make sure that the NetBackup Client service on the 
media server logs on with a user with permissions to the share.  If it uses 
system to logon, it won't work.

Don't know if this has been discussed already.  I've gone back 10 pages with no 
success.

Running 6.0MP4 on a W2K3 master server
My client is a W2K3 R2 server.

Ive set up my bpstart_notify.bat file with the following line:
net use M: \\server\sharname password /USER:domain name\user name

Then set up my policy to reflect M:\ in the backup selection.  
This is a NetApp share...

Getting status 71.
I"ve looked at the bpbkar log in the bin directory of my client, but I'm not 
getting anything from it.

Has anyone run into this problem before?
