[Veritas-bu] Netbackup 7.0.1 - Optimized vmdk backup issue
We lost the capability to backup Optimized vmdk files for thin provisioned Windows Virtual machines running on ESX 4.1 after upgrading to Netbackup 7.0.1. After the upgrade entire vmdk file is getting backed up. From our initial research on Netbackup forums, it appears to a known issue. Is there a workaround that can be put in place? I have the latest VCB from vmware installed on Netbackup proxy. Thanks ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu
Re: [Veritas-bu] Can NBU 6.5 database be imported into NBU 7 / Upgrade with fresh O/S & NBU install steps
We are in the same situation. Restoring 6.5.3 catalog in NB 7.0 did not work for me. I haven't found any documents with the steps to restore 6.5.3 catalog to NB 7.0. Our NB 6.5.3 server is actually on Windows 2003 R2 x86. I have tested the following in the test lab. Keeping the same name for NB server is important. 1. We were able to install 6.5.3 on a fresh install of Windows 2008 x 86 (same name as production) and then install NB 6.5.3 on the 2008 server. (Yes you can install 6.5.3 master/media on win 2008 x86 even though it is not support by Symantec) 2. Import 6.5.3 catalog from the production server into the test 6.5.3 installed on Windows 2008 x 86. 3. After the catalog import is successful, you will need to upgrade NB 6.5.3 on Windows 2008 x 86 to NB 7.0 using 7.0 media. Yes NB 7.0 will detect this as an upgrade and will upgrade 6.5.3 to 7.0. 4. Now you are left with NB 7.0 installed on Windows 2008 x86. You will need to backup this catalog. 5. Intall Windows 2008 R2 x64 for production. Install a fresh copy of NB 7.0 and restore the catalog you created in the test lab install of Windows 2008 x86. This has worked for us in test. The easiest would obviously be straight upgrade. But we'd also like to upgrade Win 2003 to 2008 (by doing fresh install) at the same time. NBU 6.5 is currently installed onto a separate drive. If we are to re-install everything from scratch ... 1. Is it possible to import 6.5.3 database straight into NBU 7? 2. Do we need to restore registry entries? 3. Will installing NBU 7 binaries on top of 6.5 do the trick (as the exisiting version is on a separate disk and will not be touched by Win 2008 upgrade) ? I wonder if NBU install program will realise this is actually an upgrade (though registry entries are not present). Re: [Veritas-bu] NBU 6.5.3 Master Media on Windows 2008 SP1 x86
I did some testing with Master/Media 6.5.3 on Windows 2008 x86 and things seem to be running fairly well except when I try to backup windows 2008 master server itself. I am seeing performance hit when I backup win 2008 master. I heard that this can be resolved by using certain exclusions for windows 2008 clients. I was able to find something for Backup Exec 12 but haven’t found anything for NB 6.5.3. I have tested exchange 2007 mailbox backups and they seem to be running fine. I'm getting status code 71 on Windows 2003 shadow copy components full backup. Any ideas on this? This Win NT policy backs up the OS and data partitions without any issues but throws a status code 71 for shadow copy components. Any help would be appreciated. Re: [Veritas-bu] changing backup selection in a policy
Paul The policy will backup E:\ as a full backup but it will only do incremental for previous selections. I feel like I should know this, but I've been burned by assumptions/beliefs before. I currently have a windows policy with several clients and a "backup selections" list of C:\, D:\ and System_State:\ One of the machines has a new volume added mounted as E:\, so I want to add E:\ to the list..will adding an entry for E:\ in the list trip the policy up so as to run all incremental backups as "FULL"? I don't mind that this one client will pick up the E:\ drive as "changed since full" untill the next full, as it isn't too big. I think not, as the policy name has not changedeach client should go on as usual, knowing it previously had a good FULL with the same policy name, search the system for the new drive letter, then move on, if it doesn't existcorrect? [Veritas-bu] LTO3 maximum block size of 65536 bytes; a buffer size of 262144 cannot be used
Hello, We are using Netbackup 6.0 MP1 on Win2k3 STD with HP MSL 6030 tape library housing two Ultrium 3 LTO 960 drives. Any idea on how can we change the block size from 64Kb to 256 Kb on the tape drive? We’ve change the buffer size in Netbackup and it seems to be writing at 256kb but throws an error “The tape device at index -1 has a maximum block size of 65536 bytes; a buffer size of 262144 cannot be used” HP support pointed this to the SCSI adapter. I’m using LSI PCI-X Ultra 320 SCSI adapter with the latest driver. According to LSI, there is a registry change that needs to be done to overcome the Windows limitation of 64kb buffer size. This was changed to 256kb as per LSI requirements and I’m still getting the above error. It seems like the drive just can’t write more than 64k. Any ideas how can this be changed to 256? Thanks in advance. Simrat
[Veritas-bu] Selective mailbox backup for Exchange server policy
Hi! We are using NB 6.0 MP1 and I’m trying to figure out how I can setup an exchange 2003 server policy for selective mailboxes. I know we can do that manually from the exchange client side but I’m looking to put that in a policy on the Netbackup master server. While setting up the exchange policy, I only get to select “exchange mailboxes” option and don’t get to pick individual mailboxes from a list. Any help in this matter would be appreciated. Thanks, Simrat
[Veritas-bu] (no subject)
Hi! I’m using Netbackup 6.0 MP1 with SQL Server client to run a weekly job to backup and truncate SQL database logs. The backup job runs successfully but the logs are still growing. Are there any known issues with the Netbackup SQL client piece where it would not truncate the logs? Any help with this would be highly appreciated. Thanks, Simrat
[Veritas-bu] Netbackup 6.0 Advanced Client
Hi! I’m a newbie with Netbackup 6.0. I wanted to know if Netbackup Advanced client for Exchange 2003 and SQL is part of Netbackup 6.0 enterprise edition package or it is a separate licensed add-on. Any information on this would be appreciated. Thanks, Simrat Simrat S. Sekhon MCSE Information Services VSC Corporation
