Re: [Veritas-bu] Netbackup, VCB, vRanger Policy Setup
Mark, Yes, this is a dump from vRanger, then NBU comes by and backs up the "files". So, in my case, all I need is: Policy named: XX_VMtest01 A script named: bpstart_notify.XX_VMtest01.bat A script with the following: CALL "E:\vizioncore\esxRanger Professional\esxRangerProCli.exe" -virtualcenter vc2://Folder=group-v10270 -copylocal E:\mnt -drives:db -zipname [config]_[weeknum] -onlyon -vmnotes -noquiesce -totalasync 10 -hostasync 2 -lunasync 3 -vcb -failbacktolan -totalvcbasync 2 -diffratio 50 -maxfullage 1 -retendays 1 And in the selection tab of the NBU policy I would have to have a folder selection of where the files are located? Re: [Veritas-bu] Anyone is using datadomain devices? Could you shareyour exp
Hello, We are currently using Data Domain in our infrastructure. I need to ask a couple of questions, are you going to replicate the data or just use this as a backup target? It appears that you are using the VTL solution that they offer, that is where we have had our issue, and quite a few of them. The VTL solution is good if you are not going to replicate the data. It has taken Data Domain over a year to get the code to a point where you can replicate the data and will not exceed to the point to where it will not catch up. Pool level replication has been the solution and our scrubbing the data that we actually replicate. I would look at all the solutions that are out there, many storage vendors are offering De-Dupe in there storage solutions. Could you shareyour exp We're currently about 2 weeks in to eval of a 580. I've been really impressed with the compression so far. We've been doing test backups of our 2.5Tb SAP instance - after the first backup the post compression size of that was 500Gb. We've since been throwing a mix of data at it, from Windows file server, Exchange, misc Oracle and SQL, and we're up to about 10 to 1 compression. My biggest issue with the device is the hard limit on how much data it can process. No matter what I/O options you go with - i.e. VTL or GigE - you'll always be limited to 220Mb per second. No matter how fast you get the data there, that's as fast as the DataDomain box can process it. Getting a tape based solution to match these speeds is quite easy - a properly configured fibre based tape library solution with, say 8 LTO3 drives, could easily handle 500+Mb per second. Obviously comparing the two is kind of an apples-and-oranges thing, but what I'm saying is that I don't like having to max out a products capabilities just to get it to work as I want. I'd rather have it be able to handle whatever I throw at and have extra capacity to spare. Especially for the price tag that the DataDomain devices carry. +-- |This was sent by [EMAIL PROTECTED] via Backup Central. |Forward SPAM to [EMAIL PROTECTED] +-- ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu

Mike, If you use NDMP backups, avoid it, we had to use there VLT solution, and found a major bug in the code. They state that the code fix will not be GA until July of this year. There support is great, very helpful and knowledgeable. Read the fine print, and get a copy of the support matrix, as they refer to it quite a bit before they start troubleshooting. To be honest, the DDR's are in competition with NBU and there remote office solution, so do not expect support from the NBU side either. DataDomain is more targeted toward CommVault, and Legato, not NBU. I would look at the support matrix from NBU as well. I hope this helps. [Veritas-bu] Creating a NDMP Disk Storage Unit
All, I have a DataDomain DDR410 and I need to create a storage unit to backup a Netapp Filer, when trying to create the storage unit it only shows the tape drives for devices, I am running NBU 5.1 MP4 on Windows 2003 SP1. I hope this is possible. Re: [Veritas-bu] Email Archiving
Jonathan, We just returned from training on the product. We are going to use it for file archiving and then use it for exchange when we migrate from notes. It is certainly and exchange centric product, it does integrate with NBU, there are allot of caveats. I can say this, if it is not setup correctly, you can seriously cause some havoc with peoples email. Our messaging administrator (glorified Exchange admin) recently approached management about Email Archiving, and I've got until tomorrow to become a guru on Veritas Enterprise Vault. I guess because it says "Veritas" that makes it my job, but I've only barely heard of the product, much less read the documentation etc... Can someone give me a quick run down of its capabilities in regards to Email Archiving for Exchange? Anybody out there running it? How does it integrate with NBU? Do you think management's dumb enough that if I call it "Symantec Enterprise Vault" I can somehow get it off my plate? [Veritas-bu] Need complete list of files that were backed-up
All, I know this has been on the mailing list before, however, I am unable to find it in the archives. [Veritas-bu] VxSS Install Requirements
All, I am on NBU 5.1 MP3A in a Windows 2k3 environment, we are looking to upgrade to 6.0 here in the near future, reading the documents for the install / upgrade, it appears that VxSS needs to be installed and configured prior to the upgrade to 6.0. I have seen several strings on this forum that state the VxSS is nothing but trouble to install, configure and keep working. I would like to find out a couple of things from the experts out there if possible, 1. Does VxSS have to be installed prior to the upgrade to 6.0, if so what benefits do I get from this, we are a relatively small NBU shop but I need to know the impacts. 2. If it is required is there a best practices guide that can walk me through the install and configuration? RE: [Veritas-bu] Upgraded to 5.1 and full windows 2003 restores do not work right?
One thing that I have found is there are patches that are available for VSS from support.M$.com, now I am unsure if this will help your situation, because I believe the patches need to be applied to the affected server, not to the one you are restoring to. Maybe you could patch a test box, back it up, the try the restore and see if this fixes the issue. We just upgraded from 4.5 to 5.1 and we tried to do some restores of 2003 servers like we did with 4.5 and are not having any luck. The current 5.1 client uses the volume shadow copy services (VSS) to do backups on Windows 2003 machines. We found that this makes things difficult when restoring a server – especially when restoring to different hardware because certain protected files can no longer be selected/deselected as needed. We just tested a restore of an entire system to the same hardware (we backed the fully loaded system up, we wip! ed the system clean, we then installed the base OS along with the backup client, and we finally ran the restore). The result was a system that will not even get to the windows GINA before bluescreening/rebooting continually. Is there any documentation on best practices for restoring an entire windows OS from scratch using NetBackup (as in a disaster recovery situation)? Likewise, is there any documentation and/or recommendation on restoring an entire system to different hardware? We have successfully done restores of full systems from backups that still use the “System State” method of addressing protected files (instead of VSS). With that in mind, we would prefer a solution using what we have without! having to investigate something new like bare metal restores. Any direction you can offer would be most appreciated. R. [Veritas-bu] NDMP and splitting streams, is this possible?
All, Here is a little background for this question, we have a couple of NETAPP filers that host a significant amount of data, I perform 3-way NDMP backups on the filers currently, and there is no direct attached drive. There were some files that need to be restored that were on tape, but were not in the snapshots. I had to restore one (1) folder and two (2) small files, this took 20 hours, I understand that it has to go through the images 2 times, once to restore the folder and once to restore the files. As thinking if I could split up the streams the images would be split up and would reduce the restore time. If I am out in left field please let me know, suggestions would be much appreciated. [Veritas-bu] Huge incrementals, with little data change
All, Here is the situation, I have a server that has about 250Gb of used space, and the incrementals are backing up over 215 GB every night, this is a remote office and there is not that much activity on the client to warrant the incrementals backing up that much data every day. [Veritas-bu] What criteria is used to determine a incremental??
All, We are looking into our reporting that we have and some of the incremental backups are extremely large, so I would like to find out what Veritas (symantec) uses a criteria to say this file need to be backup since the last full or last incremental.
