Re: [Veritas-bu] LTO 3 - Windows 2003 SP1 - NBU 5.x poor performance

2007-01-04 Thread mark . a . goodchild
Hi Marco

So I can understand whats going on here, do you have a dedicated backup
lan for the clients and the media/master server?
If so it may not be the drive or the san connectivity which is the issue.
I had the same at one of my branches.

Firstly can both clients and master/media server resolve its backup
interface. Use nslookup and then reverse it.
Then use bpclntcmd both ways.
If this is all good try ftp'ing a large file from the client to the media
server over the backup lan. This will show whether its the lan or not.
Send the file back to the client over the backup lan too.

If this looks good try using the ip address of the client in the policy
instead of the name. This worked for us, until we were able to fix up
dns/wins.

You may want to create a new storage unit with the ipaddress instead of
the media server name for the purpose of testing.

Let e know how this goes.

[Veritas-bu] Storagetek L500 Library

Hi All

Thanks for your replies to this issue.
It turned out to be 2 faulty scsi cables
both with the same fault so when we changed them we got the same error.

I can now see the library and  both
drives over scsi.

I have had 5 tapes put in, 3 directly
in the library and 2 in the cap door.
When I run an inventory with update
it says its upto date
When I run an inventory with update
and empty the cap I get a 2295 error auto empty media access port request
rejected by tldcd, Robot hardware or communication error

If I use robtest and show all slots
no they are all empty.
Any ideas ?

Does anyone know whether this library
has specific windows 2003 drivers? I cant find any.

[Veritas-bu] Slightly off subject

2006-05-10 Thread mark . a . goodchild

All

Slightly off subject

Generallywe are looking for a vendor
toolkit that can.

a) monitor a given server task I/O workload
on a given 'real' storage subsystem environment/configuration.
b) allow logical modelling changes within
the tool to create an alternative (theoretical) storage subsystem environment.
c) accurately predict/model the effect
to the monitored task of a variety of assumed changes to the physical/logical
storage subsystem environment.
d) this 'effect' will ideally demonstrate
any changes to individual Write-I/O's (in milliseconds) and any changes
to the tasks overall elapsed time.

Specifically...

Tool must provide for monitoring/calibration
of tasks on Solaris and Windows servers.
Tool will understand (and be able to
model) the runtime environments for all major storage subsystem suppliers
 (minimally EMC and HDS).
Tool will understand (and be able to
model) the runtime environments for all major SAN switch suppliers (minimally
Cisco and Mcdata).
Tool must be able to model the effect
of..
        -
changing the tasks logical I/O blksize
        -
activating EMC or HDS synchronous replication over any required distance
up to 200 km (based upon DWDM fibre connectivity)
        -
different simulated loads (simulated I/O path loading, simulated storage
cache loading, etc) laid over the monitored workload.
        -
all the major switch/storage configuration settings (logical and physical).
        -
combinations of all the above.

Any help would be appreciated

[Veritas-bu] Annoying celendar scheduler problem

I have a unix policy with 20 clients in it

weekly fri
monthly last friday in the month

The issue is as follows

On the 28th one client in the unix policy ran till 00:04 (29th) after
starting at 21:09.00
The schedule has retries allowed after runday checked.

On the 29th the scheduler checked the schedules, not a monthly, not a
weekly and found the daily was not due to run

If it is the case that one client will stop all other clients in the same
policy from backing up because it ran past midnight, then why the hell does
the scheduler check every client in the policy, and why has the retries
allowed after runday not allowed the policy to run again.

Maybe I should consider using frequency based schedules

I currently backup approx 40 servers of Solaris, Windows, and Linux. I was
poking around on the backup server the other day which contains the catalog
and i saw that it was at 23 gigs. Is this normal? We are a development
shop and have what I would consider more 'files per server' than usual,
especially on the older Solaris machines used for software development, but
23 gigs seems a bit over the top. It doesn't appear to be related to the
amount of data on each machine, because some of the servers with the most
data are also the smallest in size in the catalog. As an example a machine
that currently has almost 2TB of storage is taking up 500meg of catalog,
but another with less than 40gigs of storage is taking up 2GB of catalog.
This doesn't appear to be related to the platform as the linux and windows
machines exibit the same catalog/storage relationships. Browsing through
backups from the java console and backups of the db itself s! eem to be
pretty quick.

My question is do most of you see catalogs of sizes like this? Our overall
raw diskspace would be around 5 or 6 TB i guess. This catalog is only about
3 months old so far and I only have another 20gigs on that volume left...

Machine is NB 5.1MP3 running on Solaris 10 on SunV240, all clients are 5.1
also.

Thanks

John

[Veritas-bu] IBM 3582 And Windows 2000 SP4

2005-11-12 Thread mark . a . goodchild

Hi All

Is anyone running an IBM 3582 library with windows 2000 SP4
Every time I put an ibm driver on the changer and then run scan I get

The instruction at "0x" referenced memory at "0x", The memory could not be "read"

I have tried driver versions 6.0.6.6 and 6.0.8.2

If I make the changer unknown and reboot, the changer and scan works but is not seen by netbackup
