I doubt we can push windows binaries from the master server itself. We can only
push unix binaries from the master server.

No.   The master should be able to push to any clients it
supports.   We have a mix of Linux, Windows and HP-UX.
Previously we used an HP-UX master but have
been using a Linux master for several years.   You have to create
the policy with the client first to do the push though.

We quit doing the push some time ago in favor of doing ssh install to Linux and
Unix.

If my master and media are on Solaris, can I still push AIX/Windows/RHEL with

Don 't I need a master server on same platform too ?

You can  create the policy in NetBackup and use that screen to push to the
clients you’re installing.    That assumes you’ve opened up
connection to the clients.
You’d want separate policies for AIX, RHEL and Windows of course.

I don’t know how many clients you can push to that way at once though.

Here we typically don’t push but rather do it via command line but we don’t
have 5000 servers.   Are you going to user desktops vs servers in
that 5000 count
by any chance?  If so I’d focus on servers first then do desktops (if
ever – here we don’t back up desktops – we reload in the event of failure).

Now we need to install NetBackup clients on 5000 server with mixed OS linux,

What is the best way to install clients ?

I know we can push through SCCM (in windows ) and puppet (in linux)  is

Re: [Veritas-bu] Ideal Netbackup solution for backing up millions of files

2014-12-12 Thread nbuser
Flashbackup is the ideal option to backup these many files. We use it and till
now no issues reported.

On Sun, 28 Sep 2014 04:02:11 +0530 Shaheensn wrote
>Hi,

It would be extremely helpful if the expert minds in this forum could help me
with below concerns related to backing up data using Symantec NetBackup.

Background

Our system has a folder containing millions of small files spread across 1000s
of sub folders running into more than 500GB that needs to be backed up on a
daily basis. The backup usually starts end of day and is ideally supposed to
finish before users start accessing the system the following day. However, the
current backup using Symantec Netbackup takes lot of time and hence, this
impacts the system performance. I assume this is because of the current backup
approach used by Symantec is based on file-level backup.

The current backup policy has a monthly full backup, weekly differential backup
and daily incremental backup. However, the daily backup itself takes more than
double the desired time. Symantec client version is 7.6.02.The server is a
physical server having Windows Server 2003. The drive is dedicated to storing
the files.

I am looking for a solution that would provide the fastest backup in order to
ensure that backups are completed before users start accessing the system in
the morning.

1. What is the best approach for backing up millions of small files spread
across 1000s of folders using Symantec Netbackup?

2. I understand that flash backup feature in Symantec uses block-level backup
and this would be ideal approach since there are lot of files involved?

3. What are the disadvantages of using Symantec Flashbackup feature?

4. Does installing Symantec SAN client without having fiber channel offer any
improvement in backup speed? I read on some forums that you should use SAN
client only if there is fiber channel support.

5. Would moving applications to Virtual Machines hosted on Vmware environment
provide any improvement.

PS: Backups are not my domain of expertise and hence, I would like to apologize
in advance if I have mentioned something absurd. Secondly, changing the
application file structure is not an option :(

Cheers,

Shaheen

I am giving a scenario where monthly and yearly backups run on every First
Sunday of the month. What you can do is write a script which will run every
monday morning and which will check backups for that particular client
which ran in last 24 hours. If it doesn't find the yearly schedule it will
send a mail to the user with the warning.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Clean Device Config Setup - Continuous 84

2012-04-23 Thread nbuser
any changes made in environment. you can be facing ghost drive problem in
windows. you can try below steps

run a Netbackup Windows environment and get the “missing path” a lot. It’s
usually caused by ghost devices and here’s how to fix it.
Delete the “missing path” devices from the Device -> Drives portion of the
NBU GUI.
Then go to the media server the drives are connected to and open up a
CMD.EXE prompt.
Type in “set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1″ (notice underscores) then
type “start devmgmt.msc”.
The device management snapin should appear. Under the View menu, select
“show hidden devices”.
Drill down to your tapes drives. If you see any tape drive devices that are
grayed out, delete them.
While you’re there, verify that all the tape drives have Symantec drivers
and not the built in Windows driver.
Reboot the media server.
When it comes back up use the same procedure to verify that the correct
number of devices are showing in device manager and that there are no ghost
devices.
Then go to your NBU GUI and run the device discovery wizard for that media
server. The correct tape devices should now show up in the GUI and without
the “missing path”.

We use QLogic and we seem to have found workaround.

Whenever drives go down we reset the down drive ports from the switch side
and then drives come up. Now we don't need to reset the drives physically.

We also face this issue where we have to reseat the drive's fibre cable and
power recycle the drive. In our environment we have HP LTO-5 in Quantum
i6000 series tape library. Problem is sometimes drives go down and we have
to do the above mentioned steps to bring them UP. We also have encryption

You first need follow the steps to decommission the media server properly
and then remove the /usr/openv directory.

Then you can go ahead and install netbackup client binaries on the system.

Thanks,

each policy created for this client got the 800 error. Policies nearly

Re: [Veritas-bu] Directive Shadow Copy Errors Logged

2011-07-20 Thread nbuser
You can try below VSS troubleshooting steps

1) Before the test backup is run, Run the following commands to verify
that the writers are stable and VSS is working properly

- vssadmin list writers > writers.txt
- vssadmin list shadowstorage > storage.txt
- vssadmin list shadows > shadows.txt

2). On the client please open the registry and browse to the following
directory -- HKLM\SOFTWARE\Veritas\NetBackup\CurrentVersion\Config

- There will be a key named "Debug_Level". Please adjust this value from to
"3".

3). Make sure the following directories exist on the client

- \veritas\netbackup\logs\bpbkar
- \veritas\netbackup\logs\bpfis
- \veritas\netbackup\logs\beds

4) Adjust the backup policy to have the following backup directive -- Shadow
Copy Components:\

5). Run the backup policy.

6). Once the backup completes, please gather the following information --

>From the Client:

- Run "netbackup\bin\support\nbsu.exe -c -t -nozip". Once this completes
gather the output folder that is created. It will be located in
"netbackup\bin\support\output"

- "\veritas\netbackup\logs\bpbkar" logs from the time period of the backup
-"\veritas\netbackup\logs\bpfis" logs from the time period of the backup
-"\veritas\netbackup\logs\beds" logs from the time period of the backup

7) Run the following commands to verify that the writers are stable and
VSS is working properly

- vssadmin list writers > writers1.txt
- vssadmin list shadowstorage > storage1.txt
- vssadmin list shadows > shadows1.txt

Look for something informational in the logs.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Uncofigured server group (Any) when trying to change storage unit for policy

2011-07-13 Thread nbuser
Good to know that your problem has been resolved. Whenever we open the java
console all policies are locally cached on the system where java console is
installed and whenever you make changes, java console doesn't refresh
automatically. We need to do it manually so that updated policies can be
locally cached.

Why command line worked because you did the changes directly on the master
server...:)

Can you please specify which version of netbackup is on master and all media

possible.

NDMP backups are done at block level and normal backups are done at file
level and which is why it is not possible through netbackup

But if you ask that by trying manual dump command then you can surely do

Well restoring ndmp backups between different ndmp devices is possible but
you only need to make sure that source volume path exists with sufficient
space equivalent to the bakcup size on the destination path. why i say that
because its been tried and tested where we ran into a situation when source
ndmp device was decommissioned long ago but backups were still on tape and
we restored its data on a different ndmp device.

in restore window you are entering policy type as what - ndmp or standard. I
haven't seen different source and destination types, they both need to be
same. if its ndmp backup then source and destination both should be ndmp and
policy type as ndmp.
