[Veritas-bu] drives not available error

2012-02-22 Thread sql_noob
i doubt it since most times it will use all three drives at the same time

i'm in the process of rebooting and was going to update the firmware on the HP
robot/drives and while shutting down some netbackup services they hung. so for
now i'm thinking this is just a memory leak or something similar where it just
hung

[Veritas-bu] drives not available error

2012-02-22 Thread sql_noob
i have a HP tape robot with 3 LTO-4 drives on a master/media server. we use it
to backup a few servers, nothing major.

all my policies are set up to use the max number of drives

lately i've noticed that sometimes NB will not use a drive even though one is
available, up and should be used. did some googling around and it seems to be a
bug on version 6.5.x which we are on. maybe even on 7.x

has this been fixed on 7.x or is it still a problem? and anyway to fix it other
than a reboot?

[Veritas-bu] replicating backup data

2011-12-08 Thread sql_noob
i support a small environment of backing up 15 or so servers to LTO-4 tape
using netbackup 6.5. keep some tapes onsite, recycle others and send one
offsite every month. nothing high tech.

now there is discussion of having all of the backups or some of the recent ones
in a DR site.

question is how to do it using netbackup. is it supported natively in 7.1? will
we need to buy multiple appliances?

[Veritas-bu] some hosts in a policy not backing up

2010-08-23 Thread sql_noob
i've created some more policies recently to get backups to start at the end of
the business day. trying to group my backups so that the shortest running jobs
start earlier and the longer running ones run at night.

One of the new policies i created has 6 hosts and only 2 back up. i looked at
activity monitor to check to see what time everything backed up and there is
nothing for the other 4 hosts in that policy. it's like they don't exist.
thought it was a frequency issue, but some of the databases in that policy
haven't had a full backup in 2 weeks

[Veritas-bu] LTO4 recognized as DLT

2009-05-07 Thread sql_noob

this is a brand new install. the old environment is so old that it was too
expensive to upgrade it or buy something to hold both types of tapes. the ADIC
is using DLT 8000 drives and we have the 40/80 GB tapes. the SDLT drives that
can read them can only be bought from junk dealers.

since this is my first time setting up netbackup, it's a learning curve. and
there is so much documentation it's too much to take in at once. when it
discovered the robot, drives and tapes it automatically labeled them as dlt.

next week i'll probably change it to hcart. for now we'll probably use the old
robot and server for old restores. but it has been flaky in the past and in
case it dies for good we'll need to buy an old SDLT autoloader.

[Veritas-bu] NBU 5.1 Migration from Win to HP-UX

2009-05-06 Thread sql_noob

i'm doing a solaris to Windows migration. plan is to just import the old tapes
into the new environment when needed. or just keep the old hardware around.

if you can connect both robots to the old server you should be able to migrate
the data from the old tapes to the new ones.

what we do is we have a few archive SQL databases for old data and anytime we
restore SQL data that is not in the archive, we just add it to the archive.
this reduces the amount of future restores we have to do. storage is pretty
cheap, so you can also buy some to restore the old data and back it up on the
new server and new tapes

[Veritas-bu] LTO4 recognized as DLT

2009-05-06 Thread sql_noob

hypothetically we aren't going to junk our old ADIC Scalar 1000 and the solaris
server that's running netbackup 6 MP4. we're just going to not use them and/or
shut them down until we need to restore something. Or we're going to put in a
SCSI card in the new server and just run the ADIC to the new server or buy a 1
drive robot with 10 tape slots or so for old restores. not sure yet.

if we end up importing our old DLT tapes into this new installation will it be
a problem? can we just label those tapes hcart or something else?

if we have to completely destroy the test backups we made so far, it's not a
problem since we're still testing.

[Veritas-bu] LTO4 recognized as DLT

2009-05-05 Thread sql_noob

i just had the same thing happen to me on NB 6.5.3. we're still in the testing
stage of a new HP MSL 8096 and NB 6.5.3 running on a HP x86 server on Windows
2003.

the compatibility list says the robot is type TLD and it recognized it as such.
all the tapes were recognized as DLT. we're getting very good perfomance, but
long term we might connect an old autoloader to this to import old DLT tapes
and i'm concerned this may be a problem.

should I delete the robot and set it up again making sure it says HCART3? we're
using LTO-4 drives and tapes

[Veritas-bu] Is anyone using a HP MSL 8096 tape library?

2009-01-26 Thread sql_noob

we'll see what happens

if we lock in 8 years of support then the TS 3310 is pretty much the same price
as the HP robot. At 3 years, HP is cheaper.

i've read a lot of good things about IBM and Sun but not too much about HP tape
robots and was wondering if anyone used it. waiting for pricing to come back on
a SL500 and Sun's quarterly financials come out tommorow after the market close.

[Veritas-bu] Is anyone using a HP MSL 8096 tape library?

2009-01-26 Thread sql_noob

we looked at Quantum a few months ago and were ready to buy an i500, but
something else came up. Now Quantum is in serious financial trouble and we
probably got lucky not buying it. TS 3310 is cheaper anyway.

i went to see it at IBM's NYC lab and the guys there ran through some tasks and
I didn't think it took a long time to insert tapes. but then again i'm doing it
on a Scalar 1000 and it's pretty slow compared to the TS 3310

[Veritas-bu] Is anyone using a HP MSL 8096 tape library?

2009-01-26 Thread sql_noob

We're looking to buy a new tape library and the MSL 8096 is a favorite so far
with the IBM TS 3310 being a close second. Also looked at the Sun SL500 but
they are a mavbe due to Sun's financial problems. HP and IBM are doing OK.

For pricing we were quoted about the same for each one with the difference
being IBM support is 3 times HP support.

We know we can't upgrade the HP, but pricewise it's the same to buy another
8096 compared to buying a new expansion for the TS 3310 and 2 drives.

Looking for any opionions if anyone has used it.
