[Veritas-bu] New media server showing "Active for Disk" not "Active for Tape and Disk"

2015-03-16 Thread BeDour, Wayne
All:
I'm currently running NetBackup 7.6.0.1 on Redhat Linux. I am trying to move
one of my media servers to a different host. I want to get everything in place
on the new server, point all my policies to the new server then remove
everything from the original media server. I've installed the NBU media
server software on the new server and all the drives are set up and visible on
the it. After I run the "Configure Storage Devices" everything looks ok with
the following exceptions:
On the page that shows the "Backup Devices:" all the tape drives on the new
media server have "Yes, see properties" under the Limitations column. Every
other drive has "None" in this column. I checked the Properties and don't see
any difference between any that have "Yes, see properties" and "None".
Continuing with the Wizard, all is normal until it tries to restart the Media
Manager device daemon on the new media server. Instead of a check mark by it
there is what looks like a disk icon with a yellow triangle on it.
After the Configure Storage Devices wizard completes, and I click on "Media
Servers" the new media server's Status is "Active for Disk" and not "Active for
Tape and Disk".
I've tried running the nbemmcmd to set_tape_active for the media server. After
running the command, the media server shows up as "Active for Tape and Disk"
but when I go through the "Configure Storage Devices" wizard, it goes back to
"Active for Disk".
Anyone have any idea what I need to do to get this media server to recognize
the tapes attached to it?
Thanks in advance

Can you please specify which version of netbackup is on master and all media
servers. Would suggest try restarting the services on master and the media
servers before troubleshooting further because these kind of peculiar
problems get resolved after that

[Veritas-bu] New Media Server and restore client issue

2011-07-12 Thread Claude.Angeloz
Hallo ,

I have an existant Master/Media and a separate media in one domain. Now I
added 3 new media servers systems. It seems ok , I see in the
Host properties->media Server : OS , version , connected
I did not restart the master server , only a rereadconfig.

And in the Media And Device Management -> Devices ->Media Servers , I see
those as active for disk (nor for tape because I am using a disk solution as
replacement for the tape/library)
And the version.

Now one of clients cannot restore from this standard media server , like before
the installation of the new media. The restore process takes the new one
instead, and it not works.
We don't want that it takes the new one actually.

We don't have a backup of this client via this media. The bp.conf of this
client has entries of all new media servers , as well the actual.

We disabled the new media servers to be able to make the restore

We tried the FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER in the Master server , but witouht
success. I already read a post about a similar issue , but that was not really
solved ..
Or to restrict media servers entries in the client bp.conf
Thank you very much.

Best Regards
Claude Angéloz

Hi All,

I am having a master/media server running on Solaris 9. The Netbackup
version is 6.5.1. I just installed a new windows 2003 media server 6.5.1.

1. Do I need to recycle services on master server after the new media
server is installed.
2. I am using CIFS share from data domain to use as DSU. When I created a
new test storage unit, I gave \\datadomain\sharename in the storage unit.
Is this correct?
3. I am getting 800 errors when firing test backup.

Hi

I have setup a new media server.

According http://support.veritas.com/docs/273532
<http://support.veritas.com/docs/273532> , one can increase

the performance of Disk Storage Units and Disk Staging Storage Units by

creating two files

/usr/openv/netbackup/db/config/SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS_DISK.
Add the value 1048576 into the file.

/usr/openv/netbackup/db/config/NUMBER_DATA_BUFFERS_DISK.
Add the value 16 into the file.

So far the two files exist only on a combined master/media server
(Solaris 8 , 5.1MP5).

Can anyone confirm that this two file must be created locally on every
new media server in order

to take effect for that new media server or is it enough when they exist
only once on the master server for

the whole NBU environment.

I thank you for your efforts.

kind regards

Stefan

When tapes are added, NBU puts them in different
Volume Groups and there is always a different volume
group for a different library. You just need to
configure one scratch pool and make sure you put enogh
tapes in it from each robot.

You can have one scratch pool and still have scratch tapes in different
robots and the different robots still be able to access them as the
system knows what tapes are in what robot and which are scratch. I do it
and it works.

The obvious reason is that the scratch tapes are supposed to be in the
robot attached to the media server. There's no point in a job
requesting a tape from a scratch pool in a robot that it doesn't have
access to.

I'm assuming if the master/media runs out of scratch tape within the
local robot then it will request a scratch tape from the remote site.

We have seen this with a local standalone drive that did not have tapes
left in its assigned pool. At that time the backup requested a scratch
tape that we normally keep for on the local robot use.

Re: [Veritas-bu] New Media Server

2006-12-07 Thread Clooney, David
Regarding creating another scratch pool. In most master/media server cases ,
the master/media server acts as the volume database host as well and all media
servers in that environment then query info from the master/media server ,
namely the below two files on the master.

/install path/openv/volmgr/database/poolDB
/install path/openv/volmgr/database/volDB

So in other words if you are trying to create another scratch pool on a media
server that is using the master/media server as the volume database host it is
in actual fact trying to add another scratch pool to

/install path/openv/volmgr/database/poolDB on the master/media server and will
hence fail as you already have one.

You could try specifying the new media server to be its own volume database
host using tpconfig and in turn should use its own
/install path/openv/volmgr/database/poolDB
/install path/openv/volmgr/database/volDB

Then you should be able to create your new scratch pool, you most certainly
would have to name your second scratch pool different to your existing scratch
pool name.

Hope it helps, let us know the outcome.

Dave

Usage: vmpool [-h volume_database_host]
   {
   -listall [-b | -bx] |
   -listscratch |
   -add ""|
   -change ""|
   -delete
   -set_scratch
   -unset_scratch
   }

I have never actually tried this, but you might try putting a SCRATCH_POOL =
entry in /usr/openv/volmgr/vm.conf on the new media server.

We have installed a new media server with a two drive robot at a remote site
to replace two stand alone drives and the old media server.

We want to setup 4 volume pools including a scratch pool at the remote site.
It appears that these pools must be defined at the new media server as I have
not been able to create another scratch pool in our existing master/media.

Current version is 5.1 mp4
The master/media is solaris
The new media server is solaris
The remote site has window clients.

I'm wondering what else to look for when creating this new setup.

Re: [Veritas-bu] New Media Server

2006-12-07 Thread Martin, Jonathan \(Contractor\)

Create a Storage Group for that site's robot and drives and make sure
you point all that site's backups to that storage group so you don't run
backups across the wan. Similarly you want to make sure your local
policies don't use "Any" or they might write out there! Also, you don't
need another scratch pool, your media out there will go into the same
scratch pool just show a different robot #2 etc. If you want a
completely different scratch pool etc than you have to make that server
a Master, and manage that Netbackup Domain separately. I don't do this
exactly, but I do manage different robots on different servers, and as
far as volume pools go you just use the ones you already have.

We have installed a new media server with a two drive robot at a remote
site to replace two stand alone drives and the old media server.

We want to setup 4 volume pools including a scratch pool at the remote
site.
It appears that these pools must be defined at the new media server as I
have not been able to create another scratch pool in our existing
master/media.

Current version is 5.1 mp4
The master/media is solaris
The new media server is solaris
The remote site has window clients.

I'm wondering what else to look for when creating this new setup.

I have never actually tried this, but you might try putting a SCRATCH_POOL =
entry in /usr/openv/volmgr/vm.conf on the new media server.

This might seem like a bit of a no brainer, but what steps am I missing
to direct a windows media server to a new master server ?

- configure new vol db host on media server to reflect new master server
- add new master to registry in server key and remove old
- bounce services

Any ideas would be
