[Veritas-bu] BPFIS processes running

2010-09-23 Thread BlueChris69
Thanks for all of the replies.
Nic, I checked in fs_cntl and there was nothing in there. However, in fi_cntl
there are a lot bpfis.fim.xml documents and fiid files dating back a few
months from when it was installed...
Also, on VMs I asked one of the guys in the Intel team to check and have asked
in the past if there are any redundant snapshots. There never are any...
I'm not sure if I mentioned if another issue with this is that when the backups
complete the parent job still sits there even though everything completes
normally without errors AND the snapshot is deleted

The NBU 7 VMware guide has a troubleshooting section that discusses how to
remove locks/failed snapshots also.

Re: [Veritas-bu] BPFIS processes running

2010-09-22 Thread Nic Solomons
Chris,

As others have said, bpfis looks after any snapshot/frozen image processing,
and interacts pretty heavily with VCB (you will actually see all the relevant
VCB logging in the bpfis legacy log).

Those bpfis processes will stay in place until either the VCB resources (or
VSS/VSP resources for the local machine backup) they are interacting with on
the local system are released, independent of the usual Netbackup processes.

Hmm. Although you mention you are using NBU7 - are you still using VCB, or have
you moved across to vStorage based backups?

For VCB there is a touch file lock that is created in the Netbackup somewhere,
but I can't remember precisely where.
I think its in \NetBackup\online_util\fs_cntl ; but i don't have any
outstanding locks on any of my environments, so can't confirm.
Check for those files, as well as residual image structure in your VCB snapshot
volumes; also still running vmounter.exe processes (or is it vmmount? Something
like that).

Cheers,
Nic

BPFis is the "frozen image" daemon. It's used in just about any
snapshot process (VSS, VSP, etc.) You can enable traditional logging
for it.

I've had it go bonkers on some servers, so I don't think it's the most
reliable daemon in the world. Killing it may unfortunately be the thing
to do.

BPFis is related to Bare Metal Restores.
I sometimes see this, and end up cancelling the jobs, or process.

Is the backups using VSS.
