Hi,

You may want to read the best practices document first before moving
forward, doing backups to up to 10 tape drives on a single server with
LTO+ drives is not a good idea.

But if you want to force it:
sudo /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/tpautoconf -a

See if that associates the drives with the robot?
Also cat /proc/scsi/scsi on the server.

Justin.

Do you plan to stage data to disk first then offload it to the drives?
A single gigabit host cannot even saturate an LTO-4 tape drive..
You will ruin your tapes & drives with that configuration unless you have
some SANs attached and are only doing disk staging.

Hi,

7 devices on a single host?
You must be using a SAN fabric then?
If so, you need to configure that first.

Hi,

On the media server you need to define/make sure they are defined as being
connected to the robot, (tpautoconf -a) may help unless you have a strange
configuration?

How do you attach to your drives physically?

cat /proc/scsi/scsi on the media server, are the drives directly
connected?

You need to add your media servers in (that also connect to the other tape
drives), assuming that is how you have configured your environment, then
thye should be discovered.

For the Hyper-v host, you probably only need a SAN media sever, as you won't to
using it to backup anything else, right? That is if the one node is able to

[Veritas-bu] Netbackup 7 compression

2010-12-03 Thread bartman10
Your question can't be answered better than cprestion did. How much data will
compress almost totally depends on the kind of data.

Try using Windows "send to compressed folder" or 7Zip to see what we're talking
about. Try zipping a directory with MP3 files. They will not compress much, if
at all.

Now try compressing a directory with text files, word docs, excel files... they
will compress really well.

For extra credit, google how to create a file full of zeros and see how that
baby compresses.

This used to be a kind of hack to crash BBS servers back in the day. When you
would upload a file to share they would decompress the file to virus scan it.
You could create a 100mb file of zeros, compress it to like 100kb and upload
it. This is when 100mb was HUGE. it would fill up the servers HD and crash it.
good times :)

that is what we have had on our 3.4 thru 6.5 environments. i just

create a file with the destination client name under altnames directory.
Edit the file and add the source to it

in my hast i had created it the other way around, i had the file named
the source and put the alternate clients in it.

it is all good now.

2010-06-16 Thread judy_hinchcliffe
Won't give you complete solution, but will give you some tips.

Has you already have LTO2 tape -first make note of what Maida Type you have
them setup as.

When you set up new library in NB
The LTO4 tape drive needs to be setup as the same Media Type as your LTO2 tapes
- this way NB will know that it can mount an LTO2 tape in it.

When you setup your LTO5 drives - do not use the same media type, set them up
with a different type.
Issue here is that LTO2's were known as HCART2 , LTO4's as HCART which would
put LTO5's at HCART2 -
But it is just a tag so you may have to use HCART3 for the LTO5 drives.
Then setup your barcode rules to bring the LTO5 tapes in as HCART3, you should
already have a rule for your

You just have to make sure in NB the LTO2 and LTO5 tapes have a different media
type, and that type matches the type of for the correct tape drive.

[Veritas-bu] Netbackup 7 Media Server Dedupe

2010-05-20 Thread Jonathan Dyck
Hi all,

Trying to setup a storage server with Netbackup 7, and I seem to be
running into this issue:

http://www.symantec.com/connect/blogs/storage-server-configuration-wizar
d-rdsm-has-encountered-sts-error-ioctl-failed-2060017

I've setup the local host file accordingly, confirmed that my W2k3
Enterprise is 64-bit, and (I believe) installed 64-bit master/media
server binaries on the server. I'm a bit concerned I've been sold the
incorrect license (which shows "Puredisk" options enabled, but nothing
about "Media server deduplication", which is the type of Storage Server
I'm trying to create).

Anyone have any experience with this that I can bounce a couple
questions off?

Cheers,

Jon

With NBU7 after upgrading the keys through the eFlex portal there
seem to fewer serial numbers needed vs. 6.5.

Is there a need to change the 6.5 keys to 7.0 format ?
I am still in the very lengthy process of converting our 5.1 keys to 6.5.

Vmware licensing is also simplified. You don't need a license per guest OS
type any more. One license will let you back up both Windows and Llinux
guests on the same hardware.

Hi,

Yes it is, or it seems to be, example for the DB connectors
(Oracle/MSSQL/etc) and the Application (Exchange/etc) they are in a new
product together,

DATABASE AND APPLICATION PACK

So only 1 serial number for everything (in this example).

With NBU7 after upgrading the keys through the eFlex portal there seem to
fewer serial numbers needed vs. 6.5.

Justin.

There's a lot of NBU 7 information online. Start at
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/NBUESVR_digest.htm and review it
regularly.

I was wondering if anyone has any feedback on Netbackup7. I'm most concerned
with how the client side de-duplication works,
And how well does replication work.
