Matt Windows is improving - alot more than people expect! Plus it is a requirement now. Windows 2008 (the successor to Windows 2003) is also proving itself to be a very stable OS. To make backups using VCB do you need a VMWare proxy server, this server runs only in windows. You can to install a SAN media in this proxy server to make backups using oly SAN. Nope, you have to have a Windows 2003 server to act as the VCB Proxy Server (VMware requirement). Unfortunately you VCB proxy has to be Windows 2003. The way to make life easiest is for it to also be a media server, but it's not a requirement. it is not that. look at how many Windows VMs and Physical servers vs Linux/Solaris VMs. In my case, I have 80% Windows and rest of them Linux and Solaris. Also, Linux and Solaris work quite well when you directly backup the systems. I am not saying there are no companies where Linux/Unix systems are majority, then you would not use VMware in there probably. We use Solaris Containers though along with VMware.
