The data that would go to the tapes won't be de-dup, then no reduction in there at all, but a disk pool would work perfectly. Re: [Veritas-bu] Anyone on here own a StorageTek SL500 ?
Hello Folks, I have 3 x SL500, and all 3 years old now, I did not see many issues, we had power supplies and the robot replaced, but works fine, no any issues with licensing though. I am planing to add LTO4 drives in mix in the lib where I have two expansions. We used to get support from Sun STK, now we contacted a third party to support, also I did not see any issues. I also still have SL180, works fine as well, and it has much faster robot then on the SL500. The engineer cannot workout the module not being licensed because you need to get the SILKS(sp?) key from your Oracle rep so that the engineer can enter it into the library for newer firmare versions. Yeah I guess I could Justin, but if they could fork out the cost for the LTO4 drives and DEM, it would give us some growth! LTO-5 is out there which would make it easier except it costs up to 2-5x than what LTO-4 media costs. An expansion module upgrade would seem to be your best bet. Ours has been serviced only by Sun over the years. Every time a configuration change is made within the library it was done by Sun. I don't know why but ours has been nothing but a nightmare. Hi, If you cannot upgrade you need to cut retention or what you backup or continue to swap tapes until you can expand the robot. LTO-5 is out there which would make it easier except it costs up to 2-5x than what LTO-4 media costs. An expansion module upgrade would seem to be your best bet. If you only need capacity and not drives, you could get the cartridge expansion module only.. Justin. Re: [Veritas-bu] Anyone on here own a StorageTek SL500 ? [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]
Justin I have one, and it seems to be at capacity. This week is the first time tapes have HAD to be ejected to make way for new tapes to be loaded! Not a good situation to be in. Its 6 drives, with 143 slots! I have tried to check we are MPX enough and putting as much Data to a single tape as possible, but we are limited in costs. If you read the Tech Specs at Management level, they talk about 143 x LTO4 = 114 TB's uncompressed I would guess. Well I ran a NBU report for client Backup over a period of one week and it shows over 44,348GB's for just that week. Re: [Veritas-bu] Anyone on here own a StorageTek SL500 ? [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]
Hi, That is a good question, in addition there is also a CAP option, the CAP in the expansion module holds 10 tapes. Currently, I am not using any SL500s with only the Slot Expansion Module. I am running the same configuration you are or plan to. SL500 (base) SL500 (expansion module, with 2 or 4 drives) The drives lost whether its 2 or 4 appears to be the same because the slot is reserved in the drive expansion module. To let you know, we have a few different configurations but: The SL500s+expansion w/tape cap for ejections holds: 133 tapes And in the newer model SL500+expansion w/tape holds: 144 tapes Whether there are 2 or 4 drives in the expansion module it should not matter, I could be wrong but if you check the back of a DEM there are four spots in the back for drives, at least that's how ours were configured. So if you had: SL500: 50 slots DEM1: ~133 slots (whether 1 2 3 or 4 drives) DEM2: ~133 slots (whether 1 2 3 or 4 drives) Total: 316 slots You should contact your Oracle rep to confirm but that is what I have been seeing lately. I just checked one here with 3 drives in the DEM vs. one with two drives and they are all similar, either 133 or 144 slots. Justin. Hi, They are alright for small, rack-mounted robots, non-redundant though, so if you plan on using them, make sure you get two if your backups are mission-critical. Seems to have more problems with older L700 robots. Have experience with expansion modules as well, no issues there.
