Im still in the testing phase of BMR, but I seem to have 4 trees!

BMR 32-Bit
BMR 64-Bit

When I created the BMR CD's, I ended up with a BMR32BitCD and
BMR64BitCD. Not even sure if this is right!

Subject: [Veritas-bu] BMR Shared resource trees

I'm playing around with getting Bare Metal Restore setup in my
environment. I've:

* Read the guide (most of it)
* setup BMR per the guide
* Setup a windows boot server
* configured a single shared resource tree
* setup a vanilla windows client
* performed a BMR backup of the system
* blown my test system away and BMR restored it

I was actually amazed at how simple the whole thing was. Now that I have
my system back up, I have some questions about BMR.

#1) On my test windows server, when it came back up, it wanted me to put
in the Windows 2008 license key. I didn't see anything in the BMR guide
about putting license keys in the SRT. Did I miss a step or is this by
design? Do I need to develop a process to have my license keys on
standby in case we had an actual disaster and I had to BMR an entire
datacenter? (Aside from the license key, everything looks fine.)

#2) How granular do you folks get with Shared Resource Trees? Right now
I just have one 64-bit SRT, and I'm going to make a 32-bit one as well.
Is that how most of you do it? Or do I need to get more specific, like:

SRT #1) 64-bit development systems
SRT #2) 32-bit development systems
SRT #3) 64-bit production systems
SRT #4) 32-bit production systems
SRT #5) 64-bit test systems
SRT #6) 32-bit test systems

You get the idea. How does everyone else do it? Do you have 2-3 generic
SRTs, or do you get extremely specific based on your environment?

As always, thanks again.

[Veritas-bu] BMR

2011-09-28 Thread Heathe Yeakley
Hello, I am thinking of deploying NetBackup BMR and I had some question on
it.

I'm on page 18 (Chapter 2) of the administrator guide.

The first thing it wants me to do is set up tftp and dhcp. I understand
*why* it wants me to setup these services, but I'm concerned with policies
being enforced by the network and infrastructure departments.

First of all, note that I have never setup, configured or maintained DHCP. I
know that when I boot of a DHCP enabled system, it goes through a process to
connect to a server which then leases it all the information it needs to
participate in the network. That's the extent of my knowledge of DHCP.

With that said, the book wants me to setup a DHCP and tftp server on my
Linux BMR boot server. The enterprise LAN I'm on already has corporate level
DHCP servers for all the clients on the network. Is the step on page 18
having me setup a config file that will direct incoming requests to the
corporate DHCP servers that already exist on my network, or am I setting up
my own DHCP server? I'm just trying to understand this so that I don't
enable something that will result in me getting shot by the network staff.

Please clarify.

Thank you.

Master Server: Red Hat Enterprise 5 running NBU 7.1

[Veritas-bu] BMR Help needed

2011-03-23 Thread Patrick

Hi All,

I am attempting my first BMR set up. It is Solaris 10_x86 using NetBackup
7.0.1. When I use bmrsrtadm and answer all the questions, after I enter the
location of ISO image it hangs. I left it overnight and this morning it was
still sitting there doing nothing. When I use truss is shows sleeping. I'm
sure I'm missing many things, but according to the manual it should be
working. Any suggestions will be gratefully appreciated.

[Veritas-bu] BMR Communications Issue

2011-01-07 Thread Renee Carlisle
Having a communications issue with BMR and I am at a loss as to where to go
next in trouble shooting. Here is the environment:

Solaris 10 Master server recently upgraded to NBU 7.0.1
One NIC connected to a backup network
Recently set up to use DNS due to new requirements with BMR in NBU 7

BMR Boot Server running W2K8R2 with NBU 7.0.1
Two NICS, one connect to a public network, one connected to a backup
network

BMR test Client running W2K8R2 with NBU 7.0.1

DNS
Three Windows servers in the DNS environment, two available to the
public network, one available to both the public and backup network.
Since the Master Server is Solaris it is not in the AD domain

Process:

We can successfully create a backup with BMR configuration of the client
We have a W2K8R2 SRT updated to nbu 7.0.1
We take the current configuration and make a copy of it
On the copied configuration we have removed any dns servers that can only talk
to the public network and make sure the only dns server in the configuration is
the one with access to the backup network
We unmmap the public NIC in the configuration so that we guarantee the BMR
communication is going out the backup NIC since that is the only subnet the
Master Server can communicate on
We do a prepare to restore from the new configuration
After the prepare to restore, we have created an ISO image of the SRT using the
new configuration on the boot server
We mount that ISO image to the client
We reboot the client from the ISO and BMR starts.
Once BMR gets to the point of trying to load it's configuration from the master
server it fails with communication issues (Confirmed by support that It is
definitely some sort of communication issue, just not sure what)

Troubleshooting:

From the Master server:

I can run nslookup from the short name, long name, and IP address of itself,
the boot server, and the client successfully
I can ping all components
I can do bpclntcmd commands for all three systems

From the boot server:
I can run nslookup on all systems with the short name, long name and ip address
I can ping all components
Have not run bpclntcmd commandsbut I don't even think this systems is
involved at this point.

Have not run anything from the client itself yet, but backups are successful
and when it is doing BMR it is on a mini-root environment, so not even sure
what troubleshooting from the client I should do.

So basically what I am looking for is, if I KNOW that it is a communication
issue...and backups work...what other communication troubleshooting steps can I
take and from what system to see where my problem is? Thanks for the help.

Hi
I am working with BMR now.

I had some issues with creating an ISO and also my Shared Resource Tree (SRT)
was damanged and had to get rebuilt.

I am trying to work out the best way to "update my BMR CD" as I seem to get
issues with using BMR recovery CD. But I have tested it, and roughly, it has
taken around 30 - 40 mins to recover an OS of a Windows Server 2003 box.

I also have done a dissimilar hardware restore. Had a few "niggles" with
drivers, but otherwise it did work.

I am on 6.5.6 now.

Need to confirm one thing more :

1) Does BMR also support veritas file System:-Mean to say if system is down it
will boot the system ( OS) by BMR recovery process but does this revcovery also
recover the Veritas File System as it is and do we need to mention this
somewhere in the SRT?

Hi,

1) Have you installed BMR package and then created the BMR database? NBU 6.5.4
is the min version supporting BMR for master server running on RHEL5.
Download the BMR and BBS packages from the link below. You can install these
directly.

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH71200

2) No, it does not. You can use any system providing DHCP service. By the way,
you don't need to hava a boot server in physical. Boot server running in a VM
is supported.

3) You need to upgrade also BMR to 6.5.5 so it doesn't matter you perform it
now or later.

You need to have a Windows boot server in order to leverage BMR for Windows
based systems. Again, it can be VM. Instructions are clearly defined in BMR
Admin Guide and it's a straihtforward procedure.

[Veritas-bu] BMR Boot Server Support for Win2003 x64

2010-03-10 Thread Adrian Soetanto
Dear NetBackup experts,

Does NetBackup v6.5 support for BMR Boot Server under Windows 2003 Server
Enterprise x64 Edition?
If it does, then where can I find the source/installer/binary of it?
I didn't find it in NetBackup Installation Package for Windows x64, but I can
find it in NetBackup Installation Package for Windows x86 (at "Additional
Products" section)

How & where can I install BMR Boot Server for Windows 2003 Server Enterprise
x64 Edition?
Thank you for helping.

Adrian
With all my Full Backup Policies, I have the option ticked for BMR.
Essentially, you would want to enable BMR for all critical systems that you
would need recovering !
Directives should be ALD - This came from Symantec, but I do have 2 policies
that are multiplexed with streams for certain drive letters only.

In most cases, I am probably more interested in just getting the bare OS back.
Data is usually on the SAN :)

[Veritas-bu] BMR Client - Windows 2008 SP1 - Status 1 for BMR Collect Disaster Info

2009-09-29 Thread WEAVER, Simon (external)
Hi All
I am suspecting that this problem is most likely due to compatability
issues on 6.5.3 NBU.

Got a "client" Win2k8 SP1 box. Went to collect DR info for BMR and the
log shows...

29/09/2009 13:59:03 - transferring BMR infomation to the master server
29/09/2009 13:59:03 - connecting
29/09/2009 13:59:03 - connected; connect time: 00:00:00

29/09/2009 13:59:04 - Error bpbrm(pid=9356) BMRERR: Received BMR error:

29/09/2009 13:59:04 - Error bpbrm(pid=9356) BMRERR: Did not receive bmr
client request from PTHAP109, status = -1
29/09/2009 13:59:04 - end writing

Well from this, and seeing as its the only box I got, does anyone else
use BMR or confirm that it may not work with 6.5.3?

Regards

Re: [Veritas-bu] BMR error

2009-09-28 Thread WEAVER, Simon (external)
Hi Sandor
I suspect it is. Normally, when testing this, ensure you are using the
ALL LOCAL DRIVE directive in the policy backup where the client resides.
This way, BMR can capture all the partitions needed.

When restoring to alternative hardware, it is VERY likely, that you need
to choose your partitions that need to be restored. this is normally
selected manually.

Thank you. After investigating further, I think I found the issue being
that the system that was restored was missing the second drive
partition. So as it is outlined in the document, NBU was not able to
write to the partition it was looking for as it did not exist.

I have to test it again, but I am pretty sure this is going to be the
cause of the error.

2009-09-26 Thread WEAVER, Simon (external)
Sandor
Do you expect 200+ machines needing recovering using BMR ?
Like you, when trying the BMR to alternative hardware, from the GUI I
perform:

Bare Metal Restore Management / Expand Hosts / Bare Metal Restore
Clients.

Then I find the client, expand it, right click and new configuration and
then enter the NEW MAC Address on the CHANGE option so BMR knows about
it.

I am not aware of a method myself personally to do this, other than what
I was told that NetBackup wont restore to alternative hardware if the
Boot Server knows nothing about the new MAC address.

When I get a mo, I will look through the Admin Guide again to be sure.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] BMR and Dissimilar hardware

I have been doing some testing with BMR and we are trying to implement
it into our environment. Restoring to the same box works great,
however, when I attempt to mimic a DR type situation and restore to
different hardware, things are much different. Because the MAC address
is different NBU throws an error. We are running 6.5.3.1. In testing
with this single system, I was able to do a scan and pull the new
hardware's MAC information and then create a new restore profile under
bare metal restore. Once I do this, NBU allows the restore to run,
however, this solution does not seem to be the best for taking 200+
systems to DR. Is there any way to tell Netbackup to ignore the Mac
address information? Having to add all the machines to be allowed to
perform BMR is one thing as that can be done tediously before heading to
DR, but having to then scan and make profiles of all the new hardware at
DR does not seem to be the answer.

Is there any easy way around this (ignoring Mac address information)?
Also, is there an easy way to add all the clients to the client
attributes list, other than manually?

[Veritas-bu] BMR error

2009-09-25 Thread smakovits
While performing a BMR restore, has anyone seen the error staitng, "Unable
to make Registry modification required to boot the system"? Just curious
as to what this means and seeing if anyone knows the cause or solution to
fix this. Thanks

Re: [Veritas-bu] BMR Tape/Database syncronization question

2009-06-05 Thread scott . george
I apologize for the stupid question, now that I have my test environment
back up and running (I asked the question blindly). For those who may
have been lurking, BMR gives you the option to create a new configuration
other than "current" based on older backups. No expiring of missing
images needed. Just choose a date that resides on the tapes you have, and
the rest is history.

[Veritas-bu] BMR Tape/Database syncronization question

I have configured and tested BMR in my test environment, and am getting
ready to go to 6.5.3.1 next week in production. We replicate our NBU
server's rootvg (AIX) to SAN storage at our DR location, where similar
hardware sits ready to boot when the line is cut. Naturally, this will
keep the database as most current as it can be. The question lies in the
tapes that get shipped to the DR site, they will more than likely be at
least 3 days old. My question is what kind of snafu will this do to my
BMR operation, because I assume that it will try to use the most current
copies of the target client? I have thought about expiring the 3 day gap,

but I wanted to solicit some opinions and possibly past experiences before

I venture into that territory.

Thank you greatly in advance,

Scott

[Veritas-bu] BMR 6.5.3 and Remove Robot (SSO) from Media

2009-06-03 Thread WEAVER, Simon (external)
Hi
6.5.3 NBU Master / 6 Media SSO 6.5.3 Win2k3 SP2

2 things. 1 .. I noticed that BMR is not installed as a default, but
as an option. Yet I have not been provided with a license with this
(which looks like its needed). I thought it was all part / parcel of the
6.5.x product.

Also, I have a Media Server that no longer needs to see a Robot. Seeing
as 6.5.3 is different to 5.1 I do not seem to be able to tell NBU 6.5 to
delete the drives against this media Server.

In 5.1, I was able to select the drive, delete and then remove the robot
and stop / restart the Device Manager Service.

I am trying the same sort of process under Devices \ Drives and also
Robots but to no Avail. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

Regards

Simon

2009-03-04 Thread RyanV

In order to discover the new target hardware, you will have to have the new MAC
address, IP, subnet mask and default gateway. It is absolutely required.

Once you have that info correct, assuming your master serv can talk to that
subnet you should be able to do a discovery of the new hardware.

Looks like you need to copy up the copy of Solaris your going to be restroring
to this boot server.

Once you get to that step, point it at the Solaris install you copied up to the
server.

You have to do the saem thing with windows etc...it has to have a copy of the

[Veritas-bu] BMR on 6.5.3

2009-02-06 Thread scott . george
Greetings all,

I am testing BMR with 6.5.3 on a AIX 5.3 client. My SRT and my client are
patched to the same level. The entire restore process moves like it
should, but the bosboot doesn't succeed at the end, and the log gives me
this error:

0301-154 bosboot: missing proto file: /tmp/bosboot_9388_6192/filesystems

I saw older notes about 6.0 MP5 not supporting virtualized clients, but
nothing about 6.5, and this is a virtualized client.

Just wondering if anybody else has done this successfully.

Thanks,

Scott

[Veritas-bu] BMR collection failing for Linux clients

I have Netbackup 6.5 installed on a windows 2003 master server. I am
configuring Linux Redhat clients to collect BMR inforamtion during backups but
the collection is failing completely. The collection is working for windows
clients.

I currently have created an SRT on the windows master server. Do i need to have
an additional SRT located on a linux server so that the BMR collection can work
successfully? If not - what could be stoppeing the linux BMR collection from
taking place?

Thanks for any information.

I don't know if its supported or not.

But if all NBU-clients are VM's why would you then need BMR?

Assuming you mean VMware-virtualized.. a VCB Imagelevel would be sufficient

We are setting up a bmr test.
Master/media/bmr/boot server is solaris 9 veritas 6.5.2.a
Client is solaris 9 veritas client code at 6.5.2

After the creation of the srt I have not found a way to include the
client patch into the srt.
The bmrsrtadm / modify menu selection is for adding a maintenance patch.
When I choose the maintenance pack option it returns a message
indicating that the maintenance pack is not there.

How do we update the srt to include all the veritas patches?

Small Update:
>From bmrsrtadm list

select '7' option (Shows existing srts)

Then select '5. Modify an existing Shared Resource Tree' option

Here provide the existing srt (in which srt you have to add MP ) "Enter
the name of an existing SRT : X"

It will display 8 options. From these select
 "1:Install Veritas NetBackup Maintenance Pack".

Here it will ask the path ( Provide the Location of MP).

>From this you can update the MP in srt.

Exmaple: if you providing path "/NB_6.5.2a_"
It will display as below
NB_6.5.2a
NB_BBS_6.5.2a
NB_BMR_6.5.2a
NB_CLT_6.5.2a
NB_JAV_6.5.2a
Enter pack name (or q) [q]:NB_CLT_6.5.2a

NOTE:

[Veritas-bu] BMR 6.5.2 issue with Braodcom NetXtreme II chip

2008-08-19 Thread Mike Kiles
Hi All

My NetBackup master server is also BMR boot server running 6.5.2 on Win 2003.

Here are the steps I have done to test BMR:

1. On master created an SRT using “Bare Metal Restore – Boot Server
Assistant”
2. Then followed Symantec document http://support.veritas.com/302696 to
replace b06nd.inf and b06nd51x.sys with same files from version 4.4.0
3. Remove 4 files as per above document (We have HP NC373i adapter)
4. Run a full backup on client with BMR collection enabled
5. Prepare client for Restore using NetBackup Administration Console
6. Boot client, hit F12 to boot from network
7. Client talks to master and loads the BMR image
8. Then it starts BMR GUI and bombs out at “Failed to install network
driver – check WINBOM”
9. Then I created a bootable CDROM and tried the same thing, again it
boots from CD, loads BMR image and bombs out again, with same message

Has any body else encountered it? It looks like exactly same message as
documented in http://support.veritas.com/302696 but the workaround is not
working for me. Any body got this working? Any tips?

TIA

[Veritas-bu] BMR Recovery

2008-05-22 Thread O'Byrne, Colette
Hello,
Is it possible to use BMR to recover a server that is still in
production; i.e. bring it up with new IP info and new name - from the
admin manual it seems that I need to keep the original host name - has
anyone experience with this? Our goal is to build a small lab, identical
to production environment but that will be virtualized and isolated from
production network. Thanks for any thoughts. Colette

Re: [Veritas-bu] BMR - TFTP & DHCP

Thanks, that helps a lot. I guess the part I was missing before was the
multi-step DHCP requested. I assumed a DHCP client would get one and
only reply from one server.

Cheers :)

Re: [Veritas-bu] BMR - TFTP & DHCP

2008-04-10 Thread Vaikar Amol
Hi,

AFAIK, when one installs BMR BOOT Server on windows and configures the PXE
service using the BMR-Boot Server Assistant, a ProxyDHCP service and a TFTP
service gets configured on the Boot server.

After that, I believe this is the way it works:
  1. DHCP discover is broadcasted from client, asking for IP address and PXE
boot server.
  2. DHCP offer from DHCP server, offers IP address and other network
configuration settings. In your case, the Linux based DHCP server is doing this.
  3. DHCP offer from the ProxyDHCP server running on your windows boot server,
*offers* PXE boot server address.
  4. DHCP request from client to DHCP server, requesting IP address.
  5. DHCP acknowledge message from DHCP server.
  6. DHCP request from client to the ProxyDHCP server server, requesting the
boot server address.
  7. DHCP acknowledge message from ProxyDHCP server. This acknowledgment
contains the address to the Boot Server (which would be the address of itself)
and the first file that the client needs to send a TFTP request for so as to
start the boot process.
  8. Client sends the TFTP request to the Boot server and gets the first file
for booting.

  Does this answer your question?

For more details, you could take a look at:
  http://download.intel.com/design/archives/wfm/downloads/pxespec.pdf

  HTH,
  Amol.

[Veritas-bu] BMR Create Shared Resource Tree Error

2008-03-19 Thread Brooks, Jason
Guys,
It's been a while since I've messed with any BMR stuff here. So,
I'm a bit rusty. I've been working today trying to run a BMR restore of a
machine for a test. I realized I needed to run create an SRT for Windows
2003.

So, I fired up the wizard via the Boot Server Assistant. Give the
SRT a name, description and a location on disk. Then, I get a nasty pop up
saying:

Veritas NetBackup Bare Metal Restore:
Failed to Extract All Files.

The file it stopped on was as follows:

.\i386\system32\csrss.exe

A couple of questions:

1. Where is this pulling from? I have an install CD of Server 2003 in the
CD Drive, but don't think it's pulling from there.

2. Would there be any place to look for more information?

Thanks,
Jason

Re: [Veritas-bu] BMR Restore - Windows

2007-11-05 Thread Brooks, Jason
Showing up in the db for a BMR client is one thing. The issue is with the
CD, which uses WinPE. It has a trimmed down inventory of drivers. One
notable in it's absence are some Broadcoms. I haven't ran into it in my
limited use of BMR, but this could bite you. However, I don't know what the
bite would look like ;-).

Re: [Veritas-bu] BMR Restore - Windows

2007-11-05 Thread rcarlisle
Jason,

I am not sure...I won't be back at the client until later this week so I can
check. If it shows up in the BMR database for the client, shouldn't it be
on the CD? What kind of issues have you run into with NICs..and what did
you do that I should be aware of?

Couple of questions:

1. Version of NetBackup? I'm figuring, by what you've told us, 6.5, but
want to make sure.

Then environment is up on 6.5

2. BMR Client. Is it the same piece of hardware or a different box
altogether?

Very basic test for BMR...we took a new Windows box that was a test system,
loaded a NBU 6.5 client onto it. Backed it up with to load teh BMR
database. Ran prepare to recover, created a boot media and tried to boot
from the media.

3. Network config: is the BMR master on the same subnet of client, or, at
minimum, can you connect to the master from where your BMR client is
located?

Master and media are on the same subnet and we have full communication
between the two.

4. If it's a new box, did you update the MAC address in the copied Current
Config in NB?

Same box as the master server, and I have confirmed that the mac address is
in the current configuration on the client in the BMR database. I thought
this one would be about as easy as you could get!

Thanks

Jason

[Veritas-bu] BMR LINUX RHEL 3 SRT

I am creating my first Linux BMR boot server SRT. It was loading all of the
Linux installation disks just fine and then it asked for the Veritas BMR
third party applications CD...any idea what it is looking for? I am used to
the SRT asking for all of the install CD"s for the operating system, and
then for the location to the NBU client file...but I have no idea what this
is looking for. Anyone out there ever created a Linux SRT that can help me
out? Thanks

Re: [Veritas-bu] BMR boot server on Solaris

2007-10-12 Thread rcarlisle
Finally received an answer on this from Symantec since Sun still swears they
don't support bootp:

*SunOS and Solaris OS do not include the standard bootp protocol as part of
their OS; instead, they use a proprietary bootp protocol:rpc.bootparamd.
rpc.bootparamd will perform the same task as bootp

In Solaris, Instead of the boot protocol we make use of is bootparams. It
is a modified bootp - uses the same port but it is initiated by a UDP-based
broadcast protocol over port 67.

bootparamd was also not listed as a svc by default, but after searching for
it I was able to find the parameters to start it and get the service
running. BMR is working great now.

Hi all, I am new to BMR and trying to load up a boot server on a Solaris
platform. The BMR documentation says that bootp, NFS, and tftp is required
on all Unix Boot servers, but Solaris does not support bootp. I have tftp
turned on, is that all I really need? If I do need bootp, how do I enable
it on Solaris?

Namespace collision. I'm not sure what BMR really needs, but Solaris
SPARC traditional diskless booting needs the 'rpc.bootparamd' daemon
running. This "bootparam" (possibly shortened to "bootp") server can be
easily confused with the UDP/67, UDP/68 (RFC 951/1542) BootP protocol in
conversation.

Solaris does not ship with a standalone BootP daemon, but the DHCP
daemon can be configured to answer BootP queries (which is not necessary
for diskless boot support). You could certainly install a standalone
BootP server if you wanted to (and if you weren't running DHCP).

My suspicion (having never looked into BMR) is that they're building off
the existing diskless boot framework for Solaris SPARC diskless boot and
will use rpc.bootparamd (/etc/bootparams) for configuration.

2007-09-20 Thread Ray Schafer
Chodhetz,

It's hard to tell by looking at the logs below what's happening. Try
getting a more precise output using vxlogview -o bmrprep

You should also call support.

Just guessing, it looks like you had a problem with the saveconfig on
some host, but not clear if it's this one. I don't see any entries for
bmrprep. It could be that the Master sees the Boot Server as a
different host or something. Look at the BootServer properties and make
sure it looks correct.

Humm. What's odd is that the servers that are registered are on the

I did find this in the unified logs from one of the linux hosts in question:

Re: [Veritas-bu] BMR Backups vs BMR Restore Clients

2007-04-19 Thread Spearman, David
Jason,

For what it's worth. We have two circumstances where RH3 and BMR
(nbu6mp4)have problems. One is servers inside a DMZ, the other is with
servers that have two nics running. The odd thing about the dual nic
servers is that if you run the discovery option a BMR restore will work
even though the client is not in the bmr list. As far as the dmz goes we
have had any number of problems with that and I will not point any
fingers.

Folks,
I've been monitoring BMR policies/hosts more closely lately. We
are running 6.0MP4 and I'm having issues with a few Linux BMR hosts.
Here's the info from the Activity Monitor:

3:25:07 AM - end Parent Job; elapsed time: 04:25:02 the requested
operation was successfully completed(0)

This host doesn't show up as a protected BMR host, despite an errorless
BMR save. The server is a RHEL 3 box and should be all happy as it's at
6.0MP4. Version output: cat version

NetBackup-RedHat2.4 6.0MP4

I do have other RHEL 3 boxes that register consistently as BMR hosts,
but this one and one other will not.

Ideas? Anyone else seen this behavior before?

This host doesn't show up as a protected BMR host, despite an errorless BMR
save. The server is a RHEL 3 box and should be all happy as it's at 6.0MP4.
Version output:
cat version

NetBackup-RedHat2.4 6.0MP4

I do have other RHEL 3 boxes that register consistently as BMR hosts, but
this one and one other will not.

Ideas? Anyone else seen this behavior before?

How much more clear can that error message be? Consider it a Big Hint
that you should check the OS Comptibility List, as you should have done

Re: [Veritas-bu] BMR restore error

2007-01-30 Thread Sekhon Simrat S.
It's just a member server. I have multi streamed backup with 3 streams
to pick from when creating the BMR restore configuration.

Stream 1 is System state

Stream 2 is C: partition

Stream 3 is D: partition

Which stream should be picked first in Restore configuration that would
force other partitions to be restored as well?

It the 2003 client a Domain Controller?

I ran into a bug regarding the restoration of the sysvol. Veritas
released an ISO of the BMR boot cd that fixed our problem. It's not
fixed under MP4.

2006-12-04 Thread Karl . Rossing
Be aware that BMR doesn't restore the sysvol directory correctly on
windows 2003 with 6.0MP3. I'm also pretty sure that mp4 doesn't fix it.

I"m currently working threw this with veritas.

The BMR software isn't included with the base netbackup install. You
need to install the Bare Metal Restore software (think of it as an
add-on / extension). It should be on your Options CD.

The job was successfully completed, but some files may have been
busy or unaccessible. See the problems report or the client's logs for
more details.

I've googled the entry:

10/18/2006 11:01:31 PM - Error bpbrm(pid=448) Did not receive bmr client
request from client.longwood.edu, status = 0

And have seen several mentions of network issues. Namely, the
resolution was to reinstall network drivers. This was also in reference
to NBU 6.0MP2; we're running 6.0MP3.

Questions:

1) Is network drivers a likely issue?
2) Where should they be altered: master, media or client?
3) Other suggestions?

If no one knows, I guess I'll open a case. I'll be looking at client
logs now.

[Veritas-bu] BMR Backup Errors

2006-10-19 Thread Brooks, Jason
I was checking on my BMR clients this morning and noticed some were not
registered, even though the backups ran. Look at the details of the
Activity Monitor entry for the parent job and saw this:

10/18/2006 11:00:21 PM - requesting resource BRM_Stor_Group

the requested operation was partially successful(1)

I'll be looking at client
logs now.

Thanks,
Jason

Re: [Veritas-bu] BMR HPUX boot client failed

2006-10-09 Thread Ray Schafer

Make sure you did a prepare to restore,
and that the boot server (or helper) is on the same subnet as the client.

If there is more than one Ignite server on
the subnet or if you are using a boot helper to boot from an Ignite server on a
different subnet, specify the Ignite server to boot from by using the following
command (replace x.x.x.x with the
IP address of the Ignite server and y.y with
the gateway):

boot lan.x.x.x.x.y.y

Re: [Veritas-bu] BMR 6.0MP3 Fast Windows Restore CD/DVD

2006-09-28 Thread Brooks, Jason
NB - there seems to be an issue with the Fast Boot CD/DVD. I had a case
open some time ago, and was told by the Rep that during the time
researching my case, a related issue was found. So, there's still some
bugs to work out there, at least from what I've heard. Hopefully not
many though.

Karl
Excellent news - one of my gripes with going to 6.0 was the
requirement to use Floppies, especially as our servers do not COME with any
floppies now :-)

Still not moving to 6.0 until I see a more stable environment. But
will review the TechNote.

Thanks again.

Fast Windows Restore CD/DVDSometimes it pays to read the release notes on Maintenance Packs. In
this case MP3. "All Windows BMR
Boot Servers now contain a new wizard to assist in    creating a CD image to be used for the
Fast Restore feature.      This new feature is an exciting fast-windows-restore
  feature to the Bare    Metal
Restore (BMR) option.  This feature can perform a complete restore
of a Windows system in as little
as 15 minutes.  This feature means it is    no longer necessary to create DOS-based floppies or CDs.
    In addition,    this
new feature enables BMR to operate in a low-infrastructure mode,
     where the BMR Boot Server,
Windows Shared Resource Tree, and the    Prepare-To-Restore step are no longer mandatory to restore
