Re: [Veritas-bu] I inherited a mess.
Hello Sagz Importing media and tapes from a 5.1 system into a new 6.5 is fully supported, and will work. Just please remember that it is a 2 step process. 1 Hour to read the header 4 Hours to read the entire tape. There is a section covered in this in the Sys Administrators Guide, but you can check the tool out for yourself by performing the following: Launch the Administrator Console >From the main window (If you see it) select IMPORT IMAGES and follow the Wizard on screen. Alternatively, on the left hand side of the window is the NetBackup tree structure. Click on Catalog and on the top left click IMPORT and under MEDIA ID select the Media in question. As I said, it is all covered in the Manual :-) Hope this helps a little bit! I know from Experience the ADIC Scalar 100 is not good, and when it is under load, problems arise. If it helps at all, it may be advisable to ensure you have the latest Tape Drivers and more importantly, all Firmware on all drives and Robot are at the same revision. This caused no end of trouble :-( Simon -Original Message- From: veritas-bu-boun...@mailman.eng.auburn.edu [mailto:veritas-bu-boun...@mailman.eng.auburn.edu] On Behalf Of Sagz Sent: Thursday, January 21, 2010 6:03 PM To: VERITAS-BU@mailman.eng.auburn.edu Subject: [Veritas-bu] I inherited a mess. wow a lot of great info. If the robot isn't working, you can select the tapes that are in the robot in the GUI. Click "move", make sure "Volume is in a robotic library" is unchecked and hit ok. The catalog should show the tapes are not in a robot. Now when you need them for a restore, you should get a pending mount request in the device monitor. -- Darren ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu

well good guess I better get started! on a side note. I got my Red hat 7.1 box running NB 5.1 back up and running. The robot (adic scalar 100 with two lto-1 drives) is alive but the picker seems broke so I can't teach the robot or get it to inventory tapes. in an effort to restore jobs without importing them to my current redhat 5.4 NB 6.5.3 setup I attached an lto3 standalone drive to the old setup I'm unsure how to do a restore relying on the standalone drive only. The catalog still shows the tapes in the robot but as I said... I can't do a tape inventory. When I start a restore job it just sits there... I imaging getting hung up on the bad robot. any ideas? Ouch. How many tapes? Your only choices are to find an old catalog or to run 'bpimport' on tapes until you find the images in question. > I have an LTo-3 Drive but its standalone and won't integrate with the robot. You can attach the drive to your media server as standalone, but for this task where you might need to bpimport many tapes, the robot would be *very* valuable. How good is your relationship with your vendor? LTO-3 drives for a T950 must be pretty cheap these days. Could you explain the situation and get them to loan you a drive for a week or two? Then you could either partition the library and put that drive in and the LTO-1 tapes in separate storage bins, or you bring up the drive as a different type from the LTO4 ones (probably HCART3) and define the old volumes that way as well. -- Darren ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu

Netbackup should be more than happy to talk to the stand alone drive. Then it is a case of importing the tape (or tapes) that is needed for the restore. if you have an inventory of what was on the media, then you should be ok. Re: [Veritas-bu] I inherited a mess.
/usr/openv/netbackup/db/images/client_name (where client_name is the name of the host you are trying to restore data from) In there will be directories based on the "ctime" the backup was originally taken. The directory names will by something like 123400, where 1234 are the first 4 digits of the ctime. In that directory will be a *FULL file for each backup image taken in that perioud (that hasn't since expired). The FRAG records in that file will tell you what tape/s the backup is on. Asssuming you have another running NBU system, you can import that tape. However, I find it easier just to copy the *FULL and *.f or *.f.Z file across to the new server. If you elect to just copy the catalog files over, you'll need the following line in bp.conf FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER = old new (where "old" is the old media server name which is listed in the *FULL file mentioned above, and new is the new server with access to the LTO3 tape drive). Having said all that, if the expiration date of the backup has passed, these catalog files will probably be gone. Good luck! Re: [Veritas-bu] I inherited a mess.
You can import the LTO1 media (using the LTO3 drives, obviously) into the new catalogs. Hopefully you know which tapes the data is on, otherwise you have to import each tape until you find what you need. Before you insert these tapes into the drive, make sure you write protect them, and have them put in a volume pool that NBU will not use for backups. Importing is a 2 phase process. You have to read the headers of the backup image off the tape first, then actually read the contents of the image to populate the metadata into the catalog. It's pretty simple, and you can read the details about how to do it in the Admin Guide. You'll have to manually switch the tapes out since you don't have a robot, so you'll have to watch NBU for when it's ready for the next one. The standalone tape drives does not need to "integrate" with the robot. If the drive is attached to the master or media server you can add it to netbackup as a standalone drive. Your real problem is do you know what tape your data is on? If you do then you can use the standalone drive to import the tape into netbackup, then you can do the restore. -Original Message- From: veritas-bu-boun...@mailman.eng.auburn.edu [mailto:veritas-bu-boun...@mailman.eng.auburn.edu] On Behalf Of Sagz Sent: Tuesday, January 12, 2010 10:48 AM To: VERITAS-BU@MAILMAN.ENG.AUBURN.EDU Subject: [Veritas-bu] I inherited a mess.
