Re: [Veritas-bu] NetBackup 6.0 MP4 and firewall ports

2008-03-21 Thread Jeff Lightner
If both ends are at 6.0 MP4 you should just need to open vnetd which is
port 13724.

Also for 6.0 MP4 you do NOT need to add the client. We have several
clients that are running without having been added to master's client
setup.
(FYI: Even for 5.1 it wasn't in the Firewall tab but rather in Host
stuff - under there you would add the client. The Firewall is
apparently just there to confuse us or maybe for media servers.)

Can some one please elaborate on what firewall ports
we need to open (is it 1566, 13782, 13720 and 13724)

Also do we need to add the client (which is behind a
firewall) to the 'Firewall' TAB in Master Server
Properties and also in 'Client Attributes'

Thx

You do realize that NBU 6.0MP4 does not support Exchange 2007, don't you?
You need to be at NBU 6.5 for Exchange 2007 to be supported.

Yes, a fully supported NetBackup environemnt - unless I am mistaken, MP4 may
not include any or if possible, full support for Ex2k7

Probably best to check the Symantec site for confirmation on this.

From what I've heard, Exchange 2K7 support for 6.0 is supposed to be in MP5,
next month or so. Correct me if I'm wrong though. It's not something I'm

I was going through logs and noticed I had a freeze incident where the

label didn't match the barcode (oops!). Sure enough I checked the
tape and I've got 25 on the barcode and 27 on the label...

Before getting much farther, I'd like to do a (quick?) check of all
the volumes in library and check the RVSN against the barcode to see
if there are other problems that haven't been detected yet. Is there
a command to query the RVSN? I can mount the tape and wait for it to
appear in 'vmoprcmd' or read it directly with 'dd', but I figure
there's a NB command to return it directly.

Check out vmphyinv; I've used it to inventory large numbers of unknown
tapes. Physically mounts and reads the tape, reporting on external and
internal labels, plus the type of info found (NetBackup data, NetBackup
catalog, other...). Lots of options. Lots.

these jobs from re-running over and over again. Any ideas would be

re-running throughout the day. I copied two of the policies but renamed

No worries; I've found when I've had policy issues, copying them can
copy the issue with them, which is why I suggested doing it from

They said it was a bug with MP4 that will only be fixed fixed with 6.5.
They said it doesn't hurt anything, and in the mean time, to filter your

Nice.

This a good suggestion as this has fixed various policy issues I have
had in the past and I have had Veritas support suggest this previously
upon a case being opened.

sometimes fixes the problem.

Hello again

Hope everyone is having a good day. Just have a question regarding
Netbackup 6.0 MP4. Has anyone encountered an issue where certain servers
in a policy continuously run all day long while the other servers on the
policy just run once? I have to de-activate the policy until midnight
and then re-enable it for the next day. This is the only way I can stop
these jobs from re-running over and over again. Any ideas would be
appreciated, thanks in advance.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Netbackup 6.0 MP4 Testing

2006-11-24 Thread Falk, Martin SZ/HZA-ITDS2
Short Info to you all,

I upgraded 9 installations of Netabckup 6.0 MP3 to MP4.
I also upgraded NOM from MP2A to MP4.

For the Netbackup installations:

OS was AIX5.3 and Windows 200x - Master and Media Servers involved
NBU looks quiet stable to me, all of my major bugs seem to be fixed.

For NOM

NOM is working better, but there is still room for improvement.
The servers that are on MP 4 already behave better in NOM. The are online and
it seems the partially online thing seems to be gone.
Alerts work smoothly. Reports are looking OK and are working well. There is
room for improvement with the filter settings.

Did somebody of you did also MP4 testing?
Please share your results.

Regards

Martin

Hi Bobby
Stands to reason really, as the 6.0 Database is completely re-written in a
brand new format - so if anything, I would definetely have an offline copy of
the catalog, tape catalog and probably a snapshot image of the Server as well.

According to the Tech notes, the only way to get back to 5.1 is to uninstall
6.0, put back all 5.1 software and patches, then install the last 5.1 catalog
backup.

In other words, you will loose all backups done with 6.0. That may not be a
good thing.

Bobby.

I am keen to get to know and hear if MP4 is trouble - free and resolves a lot
of issues, especially for windows servers.

Still trying to decide if upgrading 5.1 is the best method, or maybe migrate

Hello all,

Looks very good so far. Even NOM is getting better.
You can see that many bugs have disappeared.

Let's see what this week will bring.

Log a call with support and work the issues you have. There's no
guarantee that the pre-release fixes your specific issues or that it
won't break something else (we've already reported an issue with it in
our environment). The pre-release has not gone through a complete QA
cycle - that's why it's still a pre-release. If the Symantec support
folks determine that the pre-release is appropriate for you (and them
since they have to support it), they'll give you instructions on how to
get it.

It has not yet been released. We installed a pre-release of MP4 last
Thursday but I personally don't expect it to go GA until the end of the
month or thereabouts (depending on what is found between now and then
and I heard that there is at least one build more recent than what we
installed). Don't forget that one significant bug can set them back a
week from the time a developer codes a fix to the build and internal
test processes and possible customer testing.

From what I've seen so far, MP4 is a *lot* better than any other
combination of maintenance paks and patches we've applied to 6.0. We'll
be going over our outstanding bug list in more detail today but I'm
confident that our most critical issues have all been resolved. In our
environment (and we're all different), this release looks solid so far.
Realize, however, that I've only run a few days and didn't pay really
close attention to it over the weekend - yes, I briefly looked at our
reports and it looks good, but that's different from an in-depth
analysis of our issues and status reports.

But My guess is Symantec will announce it as soon as it becomes
