Re: [Veritas-bu] Network Connection time out (41)

We had similar problems with some systems behind a firewall that could not
handle the backup traffic. Symantec gave us some
regristry hacks that changed how Windows handles TCP timeouts. It solved
our problem.

If you think it might help, let me know and I'll send the regristry hacks.

A while ago we saw similar issues with duplications, at least it was the
same ?Connection reset by peer? error (although different error code).
It was fixed by changing our TCP keepalive value on the media server.
Perhaps someone changed a timeout value on the firewall. Play with this
value on the media server to see if it helps.

For windows, probably a registry change.

Hey guys

I am receiving a Network Connection time out (41) on a consistent basis
when I run a backup on two of our servers. The servers are behind a DMZ
but I have set the BPCD connect-back to use the VNETD port and it worked
for a long time but now all I receive are 41 errors. The servers do write
some data but eventually error out. I am able to telnet to port 13724 on
both servers so there is no blocking on the firewall for that port. Any
assistance would be appreciated.

Here are the hacks

?The 10060 and 10054 errors in the NetBackup logs can be related to
dropped connections due to a timeout, which can occur quite often under
congested networks. It is possible to increase the likelihood of keeping
client connections alive in the event of temporary congestion by
increasing the value of the TcpMaxDataRetransmissions parameter in the
server registry.
1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).

2. Locate the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value , and then add the following registry
value:

Value Name: TcpMaxDataRetransmissions
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 6
4. Quit Registry Editor and reboot for the changes to take effect.

The default value for this is 5 and should gradually be increased until
you find the desired result.

It is also possible to increase the TcpMaxConnectRetransmissions. This
parameter determines the number of times TCP will retransmit a connect
request (SYN) before aborting the attempt. The retransmission timeout is
doubled with each successive retransmission in a given connect attempt.
1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).

2. Locate the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value , and then add the following registry
value:

Value Name: TcpMaxConnectRetransmissions
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value: Default: 3 (in Windows NT)
   Default: 2 (in Windows 2000)

4. Quit Registry Editor and reboot for the changes to take effect.

This value should be increased by incrementals of

Re: [Veritas-bu] Network Connection time out (41)

2008-05-29 Thread Peacock Dennis - dpeaco
I'm going to follow this thread with great interest. We've got the same
problem with a single backup client in our EBS. Funny thing is that a
user-initiated SQL backup runs just fine, but a master server initiated
backup fails with a RC = 41.

Standing by and reading with interest.

Thank You,

Dennis Peacock

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Network Connection time out (41)

Hey guys

I am receiving a Network Connection time out (41) on a consistent basis
when I run a backup on two of our servers. The servers are behind a DMZ
but I have set the BPCD connect-back to use the VNETD port and it worked
for a long time but now all I receive are 41 errors. The servers do
write some data but eventually error out. I am able to telnet to port
13724 on both servers so there is no blocking on the firewall for that
port. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Network Connection time out (41)

2008-05-29 Thread Cornely, David
A while ago we saw similar issues with duplications, at least it was the
same Connection reset by peer error (although different error code).

It was fixed by changing our TCP keepalive value on the media server.
Perhaps someone changed a timeout value on the firewall. Play with this
value on the media server to see if it helps.

http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-30-2876-1

For windows, probably a registry change.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Network Connection time out (41)

2008-05-29 Thread Martin, Jonathan
Just a couple shots in the dark. Could the issue be network congestion?
Many older firewalls can't keep up with the data transfer and start
doing bad things to packets. How about traffic shaping? Nothing like
low priority backup traffic to ruin your day. And as always - patches,
nic drivers etc?

2008-05-29 Thread WEAVER, Simon (external)

Almost willing to say its a 2 hour time out.

Been down this route, and actually founds some hidden settings in the
firewall that disabled the TCP connection after 2 hours backup
failed shortly after, normally 7 - 9 mins.

Anyhow, thats what happened here. Networks denied it... took a damn
while to prove, but was worth it.

time out time out time out.. !

If not, check NIC settings, speeds, ect to be sure.
