You haven't got some strange barcode rule have you or actually lack of a
barcode rule to put new tapes into scratch?

Just a thought.

In the past i've had new tapes come in and get assigned to Netbackup
pool which was reserved for catalogue backups. I'm not sure if this
froze them or not though as i think it should just spurt a 96 if there
were no tapes available.

2010-04-13 Thread Leo Dream
Hi

Thanks for the reply. The Tape drive we are using is HP MSL G3. We also have
the same problem with the Virtual tape library using Data domain.

I think label manually is a temp solution for this, however it should be
able to auto label it.

Thanks and Regards,

Leo

Re: [Veritas-bu] New tapes are frozen

2010-04-10 Thread Dean
Leo,

What type of tape library is it? There was a bug in the microcode for IBM
TS3200 libraries which caused every new tape to be frozen in NBU the first
time it was mounted. I can't find a reference to it now, and don't remember
the details. But out short term fix was to run bplabel manually on all new
tapes. The longer term fix was to install the latest microcode.

Having said that, I think the IBM TS3200's are actually OEM'd from some
other manufacturer, so even if it's not an IBM, it might still be the same
hardware, and you might still be seeing the same microcode bug.

Regards
Dean

Have you tried running HP's library and tape tools?

http://h2.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?pnam
eOID=406731&locale=en_US&taskId=135&prodSeriesId=406729&prodTypeId=12169

I would run the suspected bad media and several known good media.

I've had quirky issues like this before and generally speaking it's been
the drive.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] New tapes are frozen

Hi All

Recently we are having some errors with the tapes. We add some new tapes
to the library and inventory successfully (with bar code). However when
we run backups, the tapes are frozen, following errors are shown in the
bptm log:

io_ioctl: ioctl (MTWEOF) failed on media id XX, drive index 1, The
media is write protected. (19) (bptm.c.23992)

The strange thing is:
1. The tape is not write protected for sure.
2. If i unfreeze the tape and rerun the backup, the tape can be used
without any problem, so don't know why we have write error the first
time.

The master server is 6.5.5 on Windows 2003 Standard server (64 bit), the
tape drive is HP.

Anyone has any idea?

Thanks!

Leo
