Re: [Veritas-bu] Restore faster than backup...

Hello Hampus,

Are you using multiple streams from the client node
when doing a backup?
Are there other non-backup tasks running on the
client when doing backups?
Are you using tape multiplexing? If so at what
level?
What is the nature of the files being restored?

We find that windows system state backups and
restores are slower then non-system state.
Many small files, or files with many special
attributes such as acl's will slow things down. So if your client had a few
large files the speed would be faster.

Of course you newer hardware might have faster
memory, faster disks, faster networking.

We are using a factor of 8 on tape multiplexing,
which is too many for some of our clients, and two few for others, but seems to
work out on average. On backup any single stream does not run that fast If all
clients were equal, we would be talking about a little over 4KB per client.

During a restore we are  seeing i/o rates
against the tape at the full rated speed of the tape drives(35KB).

  Subject: [Veritas-bu] Restore faster than
  backup...

  Hi all,

I have seen some strange things
here during a netware backup and restore…
We have replaced the hw for a
netware server and before we did that I did a full backup which took 8h and 30
minutes. Later when the server was replaced I did a full restore that took 58
  minutes…
I was very happy about this
restore time, I thought now we also we have improved the backup time. But when
I run a backup it still takes forever..

I always thought that a restore
took longer time then a backup.. Anyone have any idea about this
  scenario?

  Thanks and regards,
