Re: [Veritas-bu] upgrade licenses query

2009-08-14 Thread Ryan, Dan

I think you have to upgrade the license key to a 5.x license key before
you do the upgrade. I had to upgrade all of the licenses at my last job
- http://licensing.symantec.com The licensing site will make you
upgrade them from 4x to 5x to 6x and each stage give you a new id. It's
a pretty cool site but since you're doing a three version upgrade - I
would imagine you would need all of the version of the licenses. At
each stage it will generate a new key for each license key that you
have. I would imagine you will have to add these in before the upgrade.
You will get a lot of Unknown features until you get to the 6.5 version
of the software.

Good luck with your upgrade - sounds like a very long weekend.

Dont shoot me down in flames but we still have a netbackup install here
at version 4.5mp6!! I know i know.

Anyway the customer is finally letting us upgrade to 6.5.4 and putting
their hands in their pockets.

My question is will the 4.5 licenses allow me to upgrade to version
5.0mp7 ? I will have new 6.5 licenses, but can't imaging they will work
with 5.0.

I'm just trying to think of any stoppers for the upgrade.

Hi,

It depends on the keys, I have seen 6.5.x keys work for 6.0 when I had to
revert to the 'new serial numbers' under a new contract. But I cannot say
this will be the case for you (or from 6.5.x to 4.6).

What you can try:

1. in a test environment with the old keys, run get_license_key
2. record current keys
3. delete them
4. put in new keys under 4.x
5. run backups/etc/see if it all works.
6. this will answer your question

This is as much Symantec's fault as it is the industry's fault. Most of us
are in the same position as you are but unfortunately we have an obligation
in our industry to follow the law, without any of us actually being lawyers
(nor do most of us have any desire to be lawyers).

Symantec could - and should - help us here. They need to give us a
licensing tool that actually works and allow the techies to validate what's
installed against what's licensed and allow us an ability to get updated
licenses without going through major hurdles. Ya know, when I install a
license, there should be a unique key that is tracked within Symantec. When
I want to upgrade, I should be able to run something on my master that
generates a report of what I have, allow me to email/upload that to
Symantec, and have new license keys automatically generated and sent back to
me. Symantec's back-end should be able to tell whether that unique key is
under maintenance or not. Today, we're still running with some 3.4 license
keys and we've been trying for many years to get current licenses. And
we're under maintenance!

The situation today from Symantec is that it is impossible to tell if you're
fully licensed for what you're running by looking at the system anywhere.
You'll see crap like "check the paper license to see how many you own". Of
course, techies typically aren't allowed to keep the paper copies - that's
the job of a purchasing or licensing group. Nor do we want to have to check
paper copies every time to count licenses either - that's what computers are
for! There's no way to correlate virtual servers with physical servers
either. There's no way to restrict a license to specific server. If you
have 1 advanced client license for Windows, you can run advanced
functionality for all of the Windows systems since Windows installs the
client functionality by default (which of course is different from Unix
client installs!).

All told, NetBackup licensing is a royal mess and it's a horrendous chore
for admins to manage.

/sigh

Back when I worked for an evil VAR (The company was evil, not all VARs
in general, although sometimes is seems like that!) it was the inside
sales rep's responsibility to get license keys. That was part of the
"Value Add." (More bureaucracy!) In the real world, you get emailed
license keys in .pdf or .txt form they come with an RTSM number. You
can take that RTSM number and go to https://licensing.symantec.com/
where after you login you can register the RTSM and redeem them for
license keys.

Thanks Ed.

Indeed i'm not sure then if i am entitled to the latest release although
we have it installed on many other platforms. The issue i have is i
don't handle purchasing or quoting and am just an engineer who
designs,implements,supports stuff.

I'll feed this back through the chain though and let someone above make
the decision.

Thanks for input

The licenses you have will work, BUT you will not have features that are
enabled by 6.x such as BMR or client-based security. Ideally, you'd get
updated license keys.

So says the guy who still has some 3.4 keys...

If you don't have support, are you sure you're entitled to install the
latest release? IANAL, but most licenses don't give you the right to
updates unless you're paying for support.

$ sudo ./admincmd/get_license_key

 License Key Utility
 ---

 A) Add a License Key
 D) Delete a License Key
 F) List Active License Keys
 L) List Registered License Keys
 H) Help
 q) Quit License Key Utility

Then select F/L.

The ones from 5.0 to 6.0MP4 may work OK, I did several upgrades but it
probably depends on the keys themselves, I suggest you do an upgrade in a
test environment first.

2008-07-30 Thread Dave Markham
Guys can anyone just tell me where to look for licensing info. Its all a
bit confusing to me as i dont have a direct route into symantec and am
being asked questions.

We are doing an upgrade from 5.0 to 6.0mp4 and i'm just wondering if i
need any licenses or if the ones we have for 5 will work fine.

We dont have support licenses see as they have expired some time ago and
not been renewed.

Cheers
