We see 60-70MB/sec regularly using FlashBackup on Windows while backup over a GigE network to an LTO-3 drive (through a Decru encryption appliance). We set network buffer sizes to 132096. On other clients that have to walk the file system, we can see pretty dismal performance. Try to backup from the client to the null device. Instructions are on the Veritas support site and in this list's archive. That will tell you how fast you're reading the file system using the NetBackup tools. If you can't read it off of disk fast enough, then NetBackup isn't going to be doing much for you. .../Ed -- Ed Wilts, Mounds View, MN, USA mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu

You may also want to try these things (I found some of these in a forum from a search on Google): 1) On a windows system, check to see if tracker.exe is running. If it is, kill it. This will release some I/O on the filesystems. You can also check to see if it is started up at boot time and turn that off: Start->Run->msconfig (hit enter) Go to the Startup tab and uncheck the tracker.exe 2) On the client, touch the file //netbackup/dont_sort_dir 3) In the client's bp.conf, add this: LOCKED_FILE_ACTION = SKIP From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Edson Noboru Yamada Sent: Friday, January 05, 2007 10:07 Cc: veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu Subject: Re: [Veritas-bu] Backup speeds Windows servers A important thing to consider is file system fragmentation and number and size of files, which may impactseverely on performance. FYI Iperf is good tool but care should be used when testing production networks with iperf. It can cause production traffic to be stepped on if you are not totally aware of what you are putting out on the network. If you can better to open a support case and use the Apparenet stand alone sequencer to test the links. It has a very light touch on network traffic adding only 1% to the network load by default. With iperf you can perform a near BERT test that by design will stress the network perhaps more than you would like too during production hours. I have compared SAS results for measured bandwidth and utilization against iperf and other networking testing utilities and the SAS is just as accurate and will provide additional details on mtu size/blackholes, duplex miss-matches and many other common networking issues. Ok ok, enough with all the winblows bashing. =P We're running something similar to your config here. MCData 4700 SAN Switches HP LTO3 Drives Qlogic 4Gb cards FC Attached Hitachi AMS500 (Next get Tagmastore I think) Dell 2950's The best backup times I've seen over gigabit to gigabit Ethernet are 45MB/sec. But your configuration and data contents are going to vary that number greatly. Using the same hardware and configurations I've got all kinds of windows boxes that run at all kinds of different speeds. I'm having trouble getting my file servers better than 20MB/sec because of all the small files, but my Oracle Database servers easily push 30MB/sec or better. My fastest backup is an Oracle DB and I think with SAN tuning I can get that into the 60MB/sec range. -Jonathan From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Bobby R Windle Sent: Friday, January 05, 2007 8:28 AM To: veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu Subject: Re: [Veritas-bu] Backup speeds Windows servers I'm curious to hear what kind of speeds (mbs/sec) others are getting backing up windows servers. We get between 6MB/sec and 12MB/sec on single streams going to a NB 6.0 MP3 server running Solaris 10 over the LAN. The data gets staged to the SAN and then gets backed up to LTO2 drives. I have noticed a significant increase in backup speed with BroadCOM copper GB adapters by simply upgrading the Microsoft provided driver to a Broadcom driver. We currently like version 9.81d. It's kind of hit/miss with broadcom, some versions of the driver seem to work better than others. This http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/242918.htm document helps you gage the backup disk speed on you're NB client. It's particularly useful in ruling out the local drives as a bottleneck. Running Netbackup Enterprise 5.1 mp6 under Solaris10 on master/media servers. a.Using brocade 2g ports 48000 director. b.IBM Ultrium LTO Gen2 drives c.Sun branded Qlogic 2gb cards. single port feeding each tape drive. d.The storage on the windows servers is FC attached Hitachi Tagmastore 9990. (Very fast drive configuration.) e. Servers are HP G5's also 64 bit. Some are 32 bit. Seems 32 bit servers are actually faster. note: Some of my other backups such as Solaris, Linix and Netware can get as much as 20 mb/sec with this configuration. So why are the windows servers so slow? Any one have some kind of idea what may be a cause? Or it is what it is! Windows! Bobby Windle ( Data backup & Recovery ) W.L. Gore & associates, Inc.
