Jonathan Ideally yes! What you should do is enable logging for BPTM on the server performing the catalog backup. 174 could be Network time out related or (hope not!!) SCSI or hardware tape drive issue.
What if you manually kick off the backup of the catalog? Also Network would be a play in this if you have media servers as well.
