Yes, it is required.
I am using SSO and ndmp and this option was set on all my NetApp filers in
order for SSO to work.

While I agree with the last poster that it's probably not documented, I do
believe it's required. NetApp was required to support scsi reserve/release
before this feature would work. I'm guessing from your question that they made
this an optional feature on that NetApp. If you don't turn this on, bad things
could happen. (although this is just an educated guess.)

Gilles,

I am not 100% sure of this, I believe "tape.reservations scsi" is required. I
would suggest that, since this is an option in the NetApp OS not a NetBackup
option, that you check NetApp's support to see if that option is needed for

Justin,

The answer to your questions is yes, if you were at 7.1.1 or 7.2.1 or higher of
the ONTap OS for all the NetApp filers involved you could do SSO with the
Master, Media, and NDMP devices having any number of them sharing the same

Effectively, there is nowhere this information on Symantec site. If this is a

For me until now , this is not a prerequisite but I'm not sure, and I don't
know if my Netapp's contact know about this. I will ask them and let you know.

Which network ? SAN or Ethernet you do not want to use ?
If the drives are SAN attached and you are using them right now then you
are using network ( SAN ) already anyway.
If you are talking about your TCP/IP network then no worries - only the
metadata is transmited over TCP/IP or commands and status to be exact.
Implementing NDMP will not change your backup traffic flow.

1) Please check previous postings - this was covered just few days back. A
memeber of this list, working for Symantec gave a detailed and specific
answer to NDMP sharing question.
http://www.mail-archive.com/veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu/ is a good
WEB archive to use for searches.

2) between the filers ? Using NDMP ? That'd be a 3-way NDMP backup I
beleive. NBU master gives goahead to filer1.
Filer1 dumps to filer2 attached drives. But note (!) - you'll be sending
the backup traffic over the network between 2 filers.

I use direct attached tape drives ( through a SAN ) to
backup my filers . I don't use remote NDMP nor 3-way NDMP becaus I don't
want to use the network for backup or restore traffics.

 I have 2 questions:

 1) It seems that for NetApp filers we have the
possibility to share "filers direct attached tape drives" with media
servers , but the DataOntap version needs to be at least at 7.1.1 version.
Because, my filers are only at 7.04P10 version until now, I can't share
those direct attached tape drives. Is it exact ??

 2) If I am in 7.1.1 DataOntap version, will I be able to
share tape drives between 2 filers ??

The Sun StorEdge NAS Systems are only supported via Remote NDMP, 3-way

Nowhere does it list SSO. I have double checked this with the Symantec

Rongsheng,

NDPM and SSO works very similar to normal SSO with NetBackup.

What I would do is configure the Windows and UNIX hosts to share the
drives first, then configure access to the NDMP Host (Celerra NAS), then
finally modify the drives to include the NDMP path to the drives.

You can then set up an NDMP storage Unit, and start backing up.

However I feel the need to advise you that not all versions of all
filers are compatible with SSO, this is mainly due the way reserve and
release are handled in some versions of some manufacturers Filer OS.
Please check the support.veritas.com web site, compatibility list for
NDMP to verify that your Filers OS is compatible.

Thank you,
Mike Heck

2) If I am in 7.1.1 DataOntap version, will I be able to share tape
drives between 2 filers ??

Thanks .

Gilles.

Jonathan,

I hate to contradict you, however the most current support documentation
shows that the SUN StoreEdge Filers are not supported for SSO via direct
attached drives.

The Sun StorEdge NAS Systems are only supported via Remote NDMP, 3-way
NDMP and in the case of the 4.20M0 OS direct attached NDMP backups.
Nowhere does it list SSO. I have double checked this with the Symantec
testing team as well as with Product Management.

Symantec is constantly working with Vendors to get products certified,
as they are certified the compatibility list is updated. The
compatibility lists are your best source of information, as these are
constantly updated.

The 4.20 version of Sun StorEdge OS currently does not support SSO on
Direct attracted drives. If you were provided with information from
Symantec that it is supported in this way, please contact me off list
with the case number you opened to obtain this information.

I've got confirmation from both SUN and Symantec that The Sun StorEdge
5320 running 4.20 M0 will allow SSO both via Remote NDMP (thru the Media
Server) and Direct Attached. I'm still a bit sceptical, because it
hasn't worked yet, but I've got a fair amount of confidence that when
Sun & Symantec say something works, it will. I'll have it up and
running next week and I'll confirm one way or another.

Why not ?
STK loves NT ... I'm sure it is a Dell box with Enginio controllers ...
If you want to use shared ( SSO ) drives - confirm with STK/SUN if the
NDMP version it runs supports SCSI Reserve/Release and of course as was
mentioned yearlier today, NetBackup have to be version 6.

Ok... Just a point of clarification here...

I was under the assumption that if I had 4 fiber drives in library
shared with 2 media servers via SSO that I could also share one of those
drives with an NDMP NAS, namely a Sun StorEdge 5320. Is this not the
case?

Just to clarify, when it comes NDMP backup time I want the Sun StorEdge
to allocate one of the SSO drives and write its data to it while sending
metadata to one of the media servers. Is that not gonna happen?

Thank you,
Mike Heck

Re: [Veritas-bu] NDMP and SSO in NetBackup 6.0 [NC]

2007-04-26 Thread misha . pavlov
Rongsheng,

I can't give yo much details on NDMP SSO configuration option as this is
new in 6.0 and I am still on 5.1
I do not think there is much difference though - when doing tpconfig to
create a device on media server, you'd just add "-share yes" option.

For what it's worth, here are some generic NDMP ramblings I can share with
you.

You'll need the NetBackup for NDMP option installed with the license and
mostlikely the same on EMC sides.
If drives already zoned and Celera can see them - you practically all set
jsut few configuration commands to run :-)

Celera see the drive and start dumping to it when it's told to.
Media and master servers get the devices ( tpconfig ) and STU configured
( bpstu[list|add|rep|del] ) with drives connected to NDMP host (
ndmphost:nrst#a in my NetApp case ).

Master, media , robot control ( could be all on the same machine )
servers will do the scheduling and the media management ( pick, mount,
unmount, etc. ) NBU will give a goahead to Celera to do the SCSI
Reserve/Release and to start dumping to the specified NDMP drive[s].

Would be nice if you could post the summary if you'll decide to go with
this.

Regards

[Veritas-bu] NDMP and SSO in NetBackup 6.0

Hi,

We have some Celerra NAS devices on the network (and SAN) and would like
to use NDMP to back up those devices. We have a tape library with six
tape drives in the SAN. Is it possible to configure the Celerra NAS
devices to mount the tape drives from the SAN with NetBackup SSO option?
Or we have to mount the tape drive on one of the NetBackup media servers
and do three-way or remote NDMP backup? I read through the NetBackup for
NDMP SA's guide but still not clear on how SSO works with NDMP. Can
somebody kindly explain to me how SSO works with NDMP?

Thanks much,

Rongsheng
