Evening Folks,
For most of you on my CFOT list from 2008, you probably saw this before.
For the new ones on my list, God Bless you all for helping with CFOT 2009.
Our Goal this year is 1500 Troops served. Please save my address and pass it
on. Please send any names and APO's to me and I will forward them to Scott
at CFOT headquarters.
If I may I need to ask a Favor. For Carlsbad, Ann will not be able to
work CFOT 2009 this year, I need to find someone in Carlsbad that can be our
Main Contact point for this year. Ann already has about 20 collection boxes
from last year ready for this year. Whoever can volunteer in Carlsbad needs
to have the ability to check drop off points and store materials for Our
Troops until I can get there to do a pick up, or possibly do major drop offs
to us here in Lakewood.
Also, for Roswell, since we will be loosing my friend David Chavez this
month I need a second in command in Roswell. David did an almost
irreplaceable job last year for Our Troops. I hope that all of you will keep
him in your prayers for only good things in his upcoming move. Again, as in
Carlsbad, I need a central contact point to help get businesses and
individuals on board for drop off points, PSA's for the radio stations and
to help me out when I have radio interviews at the stations. Mind you, KBIM
94.9 / 910 AM were instrumental last year in helping getting our needed
supplies for OUR Troops. If I could find one or more to help me in Roswell
this year, not only with building drop off points, but advertising and
getting the word out I could greatly use it.
As it was last year my Bride Therese is going to work on Artesia and the
surrounding area as to pick ups and drop off points while I do the major
picking up and radio spots as I can.
If I may ask, "If" there is someone in the Hobbs, Loving, Tatum, Jal
area that could pick up the load and help with gaining drop off points and
getting the word out for Names and APO's I would greatly appreciate it.
As I said, our kick off date is October 15th, 2 weeks away. I would like
to hear from all persons who want to be drop off points this year, and
especially anyone that can help me out in Carlsbad, Roswell and hopefully
the East side of SENM, IE Hobbs north and south as soon as possible.
One note, I have many appointments in ABQ at the VA hospital between now
and Thanksgiving. So I will have to do some creative timing on radio spots,
pick ups and everything else that is needed for OUR Troops. If necessary, I
will cancel and move VA appointments to accommodate Our Kids so far from
home.
One more thing, for those of you out of our local area, please, do not
hesitate to get us names and APO's for OUR TROOPS far from home. ALL are
Important and need to reminded that ALL of THEM are Important to ALL of US.
So please, enjoy the note below, consider Our Options and what you can
do and Please, Do Not hesitate to contact me either by E-Mail or Phone,
575-457-2508 to make this the BEST year WE CAN for CFOT and OUR TROOPS So
far from HOME.

Thank You All Again for a Successful Upcoming 2009 CFOT.

There are grayling in some of the lakes in Glacier National Park in Montana,
as some who attended last year's Conclave can attest. Didn't have to the
opportunity to fish for them myself, but did get some nice cuts & a
whitefish on dries.

Wonderful catch and picture! Their dorsal fins are their best feature, at
least to me - a tad bit oversized, with purple-blue iridescence that could
keep my attention for hours (if not for the C&R factor... )

I've heard that they have grayling in Montana, in and around the Madison and
W.Yellowstone. I think it was "Fly Fish TV" that did a feature on them,
with Kelly Galloup (sp?) horseback-riding to a remote pond to catch them...
I'll have to see if I have that tape... Still, Alaska wouldn't be bad to me,
either

Seriously, great catch and photo - I hope it was as enjoyable to catch as
the picture is to view.

Wes:

That trip was a blast.
I actually caught White Fish also.
We have fish like that here in Arizona but we call them sucker fish.
The Grayling we have here in the lakes in Northern Arizona do not get as big
as the one I caught.
We also have Kokonee Salmon and McConnahe Salmon ( I knowbad
spelling)

The only fish we did not get to catch was Northern Pike, and we have them
here in Arizona as well.

Salmon, trout, whitefish and grayling all share a common ancestor.
The are the species in the Salmonidae family.

Some grayling have an iridescent coloration. It's a very pretty fish.

I actually have caught grayling while fishing in Wales.

Grayling and whitefish also share a smell. It's a pretty distinctive
odor, not necessarily objectionable, but different and recognizable.

Grayling will sometimes suspend themselves almost vertically drifting
under a surface bug, before rising to slurp down the fly.

There are grayling in some of the lakes in Glacier National Park in Montana, as
some who attended last year’s Conclave can attest. Didn’t have to the
opportunity to fish for them myself, but did get some nice cuts & a whitefish
on dries.

Wonderful catch and picture! Their dorsal fins are their best feature, at
least to me - a tad bit oversized, with purple-blue iridescence that could keep
my attention for hours (if not for the C&R factor... )

I've heard that they have grayling in Montana, in and around the Madison and
W.Yellowstone. I think it was "Fly Fish TV" that did a feature on them, with
Kelly Galloup (sp?) horseback-riding to a remote pond to catch them... I'll
have to see if I have that tape... Still, Alaska wouldn't be bad to me, either

Seriously, great catch and photo - I hope it was as enjoyable to catch as the
picture is to view.

[VFB] Fly Tying Fanatic Swap Update

2009-09-29 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
For those of you who need to see the poem again, here it is.
I'll post an update on how many participants this evening. As
of 1:00 p.m. CDT, I have 11 tyers already signed up. That
leaves 14 openings. Better Hurry. Swap is filling fast.

A FLY TYING FANATIC !

Cotton balls, wine corks, tow sacks, I save'em all.
Craft beads, sparkle rope, doll's eyes, I'm walkin tall.

Mosquito net, you bet! And it's already green, don't
have to dye it. Just try it. You'll see what I mean.

Sewing thread, parrot feathers, and purple yarn.
I'll use most anything, and don't really give a darn.

Closed cell foam and balsa wood. Anything goes.
Why I've even used the lint from between my toes.

Candle wax, bee's wax, ear wax, I use'em all.
Soda straws, model paint bought at the Mall.

Javalina hair& belly hair from an Armadillo.
Why I even use eider down from my pillow.

Longhorn tail hair, my hair and hair from my
cats. I'll even use belly hair from a free-tailed bat.

Black Visqueen sure makes good beetle backs.
Cut'em out, glue'em on, hang'em on the rack.

Thus is the life of a fly-tying fanatic. Could I use
the fiberglass insulation from my attic?

I throw away nuthin. I keep all kinds of stuff.
With my kind of fly-tying, there's never enough!

2009-09-29 Thread Alan Di Somma

[VFB] Re: 20" Grayling

2009-09-29 Thread Alan Di Somma

Thanks for all the great comments.

It was a real pleasure to catch such a big Grayling. The Alaska state record
is 24" so mine was really pretty big.
They say that an 18" is great to catch. This one was a blast. He really did
fight hard and during the whole trip we caught plenty of Grayling.
Our main purpose was Rainbow trout and these Grayling are right in there,
swimming with the trout, trying to eat all of the eggs floating down the
rivers.
Because the water is cold and very fast, all the fish we caught fought very
hard, none more then the Silver Salmon.

As soon as I can get a picture of the big buck Salmon that I caught into the
computer I will send it along.

Thanks again for the comments and I sure am glad that this list is still
very active and everyone is close.

Thank you,

My experience with grayling in Norwegian lakes and fast-flowing rivers
is that much of the time, they will actually jump for a fly. I've seen
grayling jump clear of the water, to land on top of fly and grab it in
the process, both on artificials and naturals

[VFB] Re: 20" Grayling

2009-09-29 Thread Peter Gramp
Wonderful catch and picture! Their dorsal fins are their best feature, at
least to me - a tad bit oversized, with purple-blue iridescence that could
keep my attention for hours (if not for the C&R factor... )

I've heard that they have grayling in Montana, in and around the Madison and
W.Yellowstone. I think it was "Fly Fish TV" that did a feature on them,
with Kelly Galloup (sp?) horseback-riding to a remote pond to catch them...
I'll have to see if I have that tape... Still, Alaska wouldn't be bad to me,
either [?]

Seriously, great catch and photo - I hope it was as enjoyable to catch as
the picture is to view.
-Pete
