Re: [VFB] Opal Caddis

2010-05-02 Thread Anthony Spezio
I did a show in Oklahoma this past week and got some Opal Tinsel from a vendor.
Most of my tying at the show was Traditional Wet flies bit I did find time to
get a sz 16 Caddis tied with the Opal body. I used a Blue "Feather wing". It
looked real good. When we got home this afternoon the water was down and the
Caddis working the water. I was tired from the three hour trip and tying three
days but I had to give it a shot. I had not fished traditional Wets in years so
I took a reject Professor Wet , tied it on and made a cast off the dock. On the
first cast a nice brown took the fly on the first strip. Made several more
casts and hooked up a few more times. By this time I was really tired and
decided to quit for a while. I had not had any hits in another bunch of casts.
It seemed that all they wanted was the Caddis. A couple of hours later, I
decided to go back down to the dock with the Caddis I had tied. Water was
coming back up and moving along pretty
fast but the Trout were still working the Caddis. Made a cast and I don't
think the Opal Body Caddis hit the water, a brown  about 18" took it. I had it
almost to the landing net when it made a run. The guard rail in the way and I
had the line in the rail , he broke off. That was the end of that fly. First
cast  with that fly and got broke off. Went back up to the house, got some
stuff out and tied another in the "Tent Wing" version real quick and dirty.
Water was really up now and a lot of moss and other stuff coming down. Still
some trout working. It took sevetal drifts befote I caught the first Rainbow..
Several more drifts and a Brown. I got four more Trout before I decided
cleaning moss off the fly from the moss that was coming down was a bit more
than I wanted to put up with. I was leaving the dock and a big splash just
behind the dock. I had to give it a try. Pulled out some line. made a false
cast them laid the fly on the water. A big boil and
I missed. When the line came back from the miss, the tippet wrapped around the
dock cable too far out for me to reach. Trying to work it loose, I broke the
tippet, the fly is still hanging on the cable..
I will have to get some Caddis tied tomorrow if I get the time. I want to be
ready if we have another Caddis Hatch like we had today.
David, thanks for putting me on to this. I think with this Caddis I may get on
to dry fly fishing yet.
Tony

Hey guys!
/Just got home a little while ago and saw all of the emails

for prayers and I *very much* appreciate *every one of them.*/

The surgery was a complete success. We're all doing very

well, considering that is was major brain surgery- not
actually on the brain, but under the brain. Some nerve
tingling and numbness exist where that nerve goes to the face
(but no pain whatsoever), but the doc said that was normal and
the numbness would heal over a little time. They said they
had to use a lot of anesthesia to knock me out, and I told
them that's because they had to knock out 4 of us.

I got calls from Allan and Denny in the room and was able to

update them on my condition, which you have seen here. Thank
you Allan and Denny.

The surgery was around 2 hours, but I was in recovery for 3

hours instead of one, which worried my family- as you could
imagine, adding to that they couldn't get any progress updates
because it was after hours. (The staff didn't realize thay had
4 of us to wake up- lol)

But it all worked out fine, and I had/ two/ blood vessels

rubbing the nerve- one wore a groove and another had worked it
way through the fibers of the nerve to the opposide side. The
trigeminal nerve is way inside the head tucked under the
brain. So he cut a 1.5" hole in the skull, moved the brain
over, and got to the nerve way deep. So the Doc fixed both
vessels and was pretty sure that this was my problem the
moment he saw the situation. He had to cut the connective
tissues and move the blood vessels to the back and put a
teflon pad between the blood vessels and the nerves. Problem
solved. I have a real good scar forth-coming behind my right
ear from over the ear to my the top of my shirt collar (about
8" long). The top is numb, but the bottom is pretty sore as
that is the neck muscle that he had to penetrate.

After all this and and 3 hours in recovery, I was able to

walk around just 2 hours after waking up (to go to the
restroom), then I took another walk about 10:00 that night (3
hrs after waking up) and did very well. The next morning I
took a 15min. walk with the therapist and she said I didn't
need any therapy- she said she couldn't tell that I had had
surgery by my strides. Then last night I walked the halls for
50 minutes and only stopped because my socked feet got sore.

I think you are talking about what we call a Pusher fly..aka scuttle fly. It
is a fly tied in standard body pattern, usually like a bomber or quite fat
with dubbing, and then the wings are two feathers pointing forward so that
they push the water. It works well for pike and bass..also for trout at
night when you want a disturbance in the water. Joyce

out 4 of us.

I got calls from Allan and Denny in the room and was able to update them on
my condition, which you have seen here. Thank you Allan and Denny.

The surgery was around 2 hours, but I was in recovery for 3 hours instead
of one, which worried my family- as you could imagine, adding to that they
couldn't get any progress updates because it was after hours. (The staff didn't
realize thay had 4 of us to wake up- lol)

But it all worked out fine, and I had two blood vessels rubbing the nerve-
one wore a groove and another had worked it way through the fibers of the nerve
to the opposide side. The trigeminal nerve is way inside the head tucked under
the brain. So he cut a 1.5" hole in the skull, moved the brain over, and got
to the nerve way deep. So the Doc fixed both vessels and was pretty sure that
this was my problem the moment he saw the situation. He had to cut the
connective tissues and move the blood vessels to the back and put a teflon pad
between the blood vessels and the nerves. Problem solved. I have a real good
scar forth-coming behind my right ear from over the ear to my the top of my
shirt collar (about 8" long). The top is numb, but the bottom is pretty sore
as that is the neck muscle that he had to penetrate.

After all this and and 3 hours in recovery, I was able to walk around just
2 hours after waking up (to go to the restroom), then I took another walk about
10:00 that night (3 hrs after waking up) and did very well. The next morning I
took a 15min. walk with the therapist and she said I didn't need any therapy-
she said she couldn't tell that I had had surgery by my strides. Then last
night I walked the halls for 50 minutes and only stopped because my socked feet
got sore.

Amazing what this neurosurgeon is able to do. He's rated as right at the
top in all the country for what his specialty is- deep brain surgery. After
being operated on by him, I'd recommend him without a doubt to anyone. The new
hospital I went to is 5 stars plus in my book. I could have not asked for a
better surgery experience and recovery.

I feel great! Way better than when I walked into the hospital. The
epileptic seizure drugs and the pain were taking their toll on my whole being.
I have to thank 1st God and then my wife and then my flytying in helping me to
hold up until I got the surgery. Having a 'new' friend in Dennis Conrad was
also of great relief to me. I'll spare you all of the details, b

Not me. Although it sure is fun having a trout, especially big cuts, nail a
dry, by far I've caught more fish sub-surface. & I guarantee you, there's an
appreciable skill in catching fish that you can't see.

"Interestingly, some fly fishers reached the conclusion that only
surface-feeding trout are worthy of the fly fisher's skill and art."
