[VFB] 11th Annual Fly Tying Exposition-Holt High School in Holt, MI on Dec 4, 2010

2010-11-21 Thread flytierodwrap
It has been a LONG time since I have posted, or have been in a swap.
But just an FYI-

The Great Lakes Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers will host the
11th Annual Fly Tying Exposition at the Holt High School in Holt,
Michigan on Saturday, December 4, 2010. The expo will be open to the
public from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The GLC will be celebrating its 30th Anniversary at this event. Over
80 tiers will be on hand this year to demonstrate their fly tying
skills. The Federation of Fly Fishers Buz Buszek Award is the
Federation's most prestigious fly tying award and we are pleased that
Buszek Award recipients Jeff ABear@ Andrews and Chris Helm will be
with us.. Returning talents also include Oscar Feliu, Dennis Potter,
Ray Schmidt, Dick Walle, Julie Nielsen, Chris Soule, and many others.

2010-11-21 Thread John
I will be there tying as well. I plan on demo-ing the Swiss vise by tying the
same pattern on a standard hook, as well as a tube (since it converts into a
tube vise)

[VFB] bears and guns

2010-11-21 Thread mel hocken
Every so often a thread goes about inquiring the type of protection the vfb
list uses in bear country. Dono likes to carry a small cannon. Myself, I always
bring a friend who cannot run as fast as I can. I looked up a few stats just
for curiousities sake to try and put the risk into perspective.

>PFD while angling?

In 1998 in the United States 1501 deaths were caused by the accidental
discharge of a fire arm. Probably more likely to shoot yourself or another
angler than a bear

According to the US weather network 73 Americans are killed by lightning each
year. Graphite conducts electricity.

Seems to me the least of our worries while fishing should be bears.

Mel

Hoping to be there - life has been a bit crazy, so it would be a good
diversion.

If you try to fail, and succeed at failing, which have you done?

What's the statistics of attacking bears being killed or scared off
by armed people who saved themselves or others?
I wanna be in that statistic.

I remember getting that photo.
Something was wrong with the bear, but it did attack him, I think.

It was absolutely starving. Whether it was after Greg or his dogs,
doesn't matter.
