Sorry, been a hectic week - anyhow, the article is on British Wet Flies.
Joyce and Ashley have graciously sent the article, and I thank them both
profusely for doing so.  I'd purchase it myself, if not for the fact that
it is just not available in circulation much, if at all, anymore.  I'm a
loyal subscriber to the magazine (though I wholeheartedly agree that it has
declined significantly over recent years) .

Again, thank you so very much for the article, Joyce and Ashley, and let me
know if I can send you some material as a "barter" thanks.  I think I have
some porcupine quills, always a hit *a la *coffin fly, "modern dry fly
code" cover - look alike.  That goes for anyone, I suppose, if you wish to
try your hand at it and need some porcupine quills, let me know, but Joyce
and Ashley have 'first dibs'.

 I have actually stopped subscribing because they kept messing up my
 subscription through incompetence so get mine through ebay which actually
 turns out to be slightly cheaper and I get my issues earlier than if I
 subscribed. I think that the Editor and the company who own it are at fault

[VFB] RE: anyone ever injure their tying arm?

I shattered my right elbow October 8th, reconstructive surgery which entailed 
replacing one side of the joint with the other side screwed together occurred 
October 13th.

My question is has anyone on the list suffered a similar injury to their tying 
arm, and how long before you were able to tie again?

Depending on how badly you need a fly tying fix, you might check out the
"Evergreen Hand" Here is a link to a short video:

There are longer videos and other online articles on this invention that
allows one handed fly tying. One of our club members, Steve Burkett, made
improvements to the original creation and it is used by one of the veterans
in out local Project Healing Waters group. I have tied a few flies with it
and it is a challenge, but quite rewarding when a finished fly is produced.
Or course, trying to do this with your non-dominant hand would be even more
challenging.

Wayne,

Depends on a few things, but all things should be under your doctor's 
scrutiny. Since the injury is fairly fresh, I wouldn't do anything that 
causes pain to start.  Maybe by now you know some of the things you can do, 
like holding a full mug of coffee, or eating with a fork. You might start 
with holding the bobbin and pivoting the wrist, using the squeezing and 
wrist muscles.  And then try cutting easy things with scissors. That would 
tell you if you want to start there, or with something less, like simple 
isometrics, like making a fist and twisting it.


Then, as you start to heal, the physical therapy of tying might be good, to 
have small movements with little force & effort, and then build up. You 
would also build up the use and dexterity of your left hand while it does 
some of the chores of your right hand.


Joyce could weigh in on this, as she's a nurse.

Along a similar vein. When I was 16, I contracted double viral pneumonia. 
Almost kicked the bucket there (50-50 chance)- in hospital 21 days. But I 
recovered, and one year later I was jogging for miles. What helped me 
recover was getting back to playing my clarinet, as I was in the HS 
orchestra. (Pete Fountain was my musical hero)  To start with, I flat could 
not blow a single note without my lungs being on fire. But little by little, 
over 6 months, I recovered completely to full release and got back to 1st 
chair clarinet and added tenor sax. Doctors were very surprised at the speed 
I recovered, seeing how bad off I started. Doing what I loved helped me to 
persist at it, and fortunately, my lungs were the beneficiary.


I see the same application for you possibly. Loving to tie will motivate you 
to push your therapy, which should be good. Again, get signed off by your 
doctor- he/she knows your condition the best.

I had rotator cuff surgery several years ago. I had to keep it in a 
sling the first 3 months.  Total recupe for full motion* was about a 
year, but it was about 6 months before I could tie.  And at first I 
could only tie one or two flies before I needed to rest it.


*(Nearly full motion.  I still can't reach one tiny spot on my back when 
it itches.  Of course, knowing I couldn't reach it made it itch more 
often.  Then I bought a back scratcher and it seldom itches any more.  
The ol' brain pulls some funny tricks on a person.)

road to recovery may be long and painful but you already have a leg up on

rehabilitate translate well to fly tying. I hope your recovery goes well
and that you are back to fly fishing, kayaking and bike riding in the

I can use my hand now, can't open a jar but can do low impact things.  Thinking 
fly tying would be a good challenge.  My splint may impede my ability to tie  
since it ends about an inch below where my first gears end.

I'm curious what difficulties others have experienced with hand skills after an 
injury like this.

I'm going to give tying a try later this evening.
