[VFB] 1st Swap, 2019 - Pink Squirrel Nymph

Howdy All,

I am still in stroke recovery, but able to do more all the time- just need to 
keep my energy up.

I found an interesting fly on the internet that would be a good candidate for a 
swap.  It’s called a Pink Squirrel Nymph. Many of you are aware of it and have 
probably fished it.

If you have fished it, a story can be added.  Even crawfish like this pattern!


Ye Rooles: (for IOFFers)

1.  Role call for who’s still here- swapping or not.
2.  List of those interested in swapping this easy and much-liked pattern.
3.  Lots of photos on a search of images
4.  Broad range of quarry fish
5.  Very east tie, easily adaptable to rope-dubbing if you choose

6.  Size 16 – 8 all one size or varied, style hook can vary
7.  Gray body (your choice of dubbing), pink collar (any material suited for a 
collar per the photo archives)
8.  Gold or silver bead
9.  Any customization in keeping with the basic pattern

10  Number of swappers to dictate size of swap
11.  Standard swap rules apply: toe tags, return SASE (some sort of pkg.) or 
Cash for return of flies. Recipes not needed unless you did something special. 
(Story?) 

Any extra flies will be donated to good charity. 

Will post a photo of all designs. Google images should pick it up.

All comments welcome. Easy tie, great fly (famous even), lots of variations 
with a common theme.

Any VFB swappers left? 
Will give it a couple of weeks for distance lurkers to check in. Maybe we’ll

Mr. Eaux: Any idea how far out the due date might be??? Reason I ask is that I 
JUST ordered some of the things (hooks, beads, lead wire, UV glue, new UV 
light) that I’ll need yesterday so I may not even have my tying materials for a 
week/10 days. Thanks. Chuckles

 

BTW. Folks: I hate to see ppl do it, but they’ll pay $30-35 a bottle of Loon 
brand UV glue, when you can do like I do and order the same amt. from ebay for 
a no name/off name  (but works great) brand bottle for $44.25 and FREE 
shipping. Also, I sa a pop up ad for it and now I can’t even remember what it’s 
called but it takes the stickiness out of cured UV glue (and YES, loon brand is 
sticky when dry as is the off brand. Also, I ordered my off brand new UV 
flashlight for only $3.95, whereas Loon etc is $30-35 for the SAME thing. Don’t 
get me wrong, Loon is a wonderful brand and I’m NOT dissing them, but for those 
of us on limited/fixed incomes these preices mean the difference between the 
ability to have and use UV  activated type glue or just doing without it.

Howdy All,

 

I am still in stroke recovery, but able to do more all the time- just need to 
keep my energy up.

 

I found an interesting fly on the interne?t that would be a good candidate for 
a swap.  It’s called a Pink Squirrel Nymph. Many of you are aware of it and 
have probably fished it.

 

If you have fished it, a story can be added.  Even crawfish like this pattern!

 

 

 

Ye Rooles: (for IOFFers)

 

1.  Role call for who’s still here- swapping or not.

2.  List of those interested in swapping this easy and much-liked pattern.

3.  Lots of photos on a search of images

4.  Broad range of quarry fish

5.  Very east tie, easily adaptable to rope-dubbing if you choose

 

6.  Size 16 – 8 all one size or varied, style hook can vary

7.  Gray body (your choice of dubbing), pink collar (any material suited for a 
collar per the photo archives)

8.  Gold or silver bead

9.  Any customization in keeping with the basic pattern

 

10  Number of swappers to dictate size of swap

11.  Standard swap rules apply: toe tags, return SASE (some sort of pkg.) or 
Cash for return of flies. Recipes not needed unless you did something special. 
(Story?) 

 

Any extra flies will be donated to good charity. 

 

Will post a photo of all designs. Google images should pick it up.

 

All comments welcome. Easy tie, great fly (famous even), lots of variations

I'm in.  Years ago some us were in a Drinks Swap.  Rules were :  Tie a fly
that has the same name as a mixed drink.  Provide recipe for the fly and
the drink.. I tied the Pink Squirrel:

 Both were invented in Wisconsin.  I live only about 35 miles from John
Bethke's home in Westby, WI.  I've used his Pink Squirrel pattern for over
30 years.
I have tied several variations of his original version..   I could tell
lots of  stories about using this pattern.  The one I remember best is from
several years ago.  Two friends and I couldn't wait to do some early
fishing on one of our local spring creeks. Recent rains had left every
stream running high and very discolored.  After the third or fourth stream
we gave up on finding clear water and decided to fish anyway.   I don't
remember what my friends fished with.  I do remember that neither one was
using a Pink Squirrel.   And neither one caught any fish. Actually I was
surprised I did.  I offered them some but they must have been going thru
what I call a *purist stage* "Pink Squirrels don't look like anything that
lives in a trout stream."  Okay. So what. Anyway count me in.
