Henk already addressed your question. Most tying threads split readily. A notable exception is Uni-thread, which is 'bonded' thread - a resin is incorporated with the filaments, essentially glueing them together into a 'round' thread. The bond can be broken, with nail-edge pressure for example, but certainly is not the easiest thread which comes to mind when planning to do split thread techniques ;-) My staple thread is Benecchi 12/0 (also available in 6/0, 8/0, and 10/0) - I find it consistent, quite strong. and it twists and untwists/flattens - key characteristics for doing split thread - very easily.
