It's the first one I mention every time someone asks for book advice. Of my
books, this was the one that dug deepest in the wallet... but is also the
only one I would call 'underpriced'. (And, even if it was one of the first
tying books I bought, it's still the one with the thinnest dust layer. LOL)

For what it may be worth, (Now I'll say that I have NO clue the accuracy or
lack thereof for this!) I've heard from three different people, albeit all
at the local shop, that the benchside reference is now available
electronically for about half the book's price. (about 35 to 40 US$). I
have the book, so see little need for it, but I thought I'd throw that out
there.

[VFB] Re: Books are Expensive

2009-11-07 Thread Peter Gramp
Uggh, for that price, I'd just get a gently worn copy of the hardback
book... say, at the link below for $50... ;)
http://www.amatobooks.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PRODStore_Code=AmatobooksComProduct_Code=C1571881263Category_Code=
I saw a FTJ (fly fishing and tying journal) at the local Barnes Noble with
an advertisement 'construction- paper' cover over the magazine itself - the
back of which showed the CD-Rom at a price of 40 bucks or just under that.
I'd still go for the 50 dollar hard-back, but that's just because of how I
use the thing - I'm not trucking my computer all over when tying ;)

[VFB] Re: Books are Expensive

2009-11-07 Thread Mark Romero

i remember when Rare and Unusual volume's 1. 2. first came out in the 90's.
They were $90 each..i paid a lot more than that for my copies. But the
$600 dollar book is the Rarest of all 4 of the Ken Sawada books. i have all
four signed. But The ONE is extremely hard to find and always very expensive.
i actually coulda got it for $550.but the guy that had it, (Japanese cat
named Kaz, who everybody up in the northeast knows as a very shrewd wheeler
dealer), was himmin' and hawin' bout not really wantin' to sell it blah blah
blash blah blah.so i just threw 'em $600 and took it, lmao. Didn't feel
like listenin' to all the crap.

Kaz deals in bamboo, fiberglass, reels, books, nets, and all kinna antigue and
special Stuff. He's been around doin' all that for yearsand i knew he
had the book..and i'd been lookin' for it for a few years. And it's not
the kinna thing you find more than once. Soif you snooze, you
looze. He use to bring the book to shows but never wana sell it. So finally i
just decided it was mine. He got me, lmao. But i got IT!

$600??? The most expensive I have costed about $60. Will a book worth 10
times as much be 10 times as good... than Fly-Tier's Benchside Reference?
 That'll be some book... ;o)

Well, the Benchside Reference won't make an 11th commandment when it comes
to pattern.
There aren't many patterns to be found in that book (if even one)...

Nick.i've always told new tyers, that if they were to go out and get
just one book, to get started.it SHOULD be the Benchside Reference.
Case closed. And it is one book i do not have..but i would still say
it's the best single book for a new tyers to go out and get. i've looked
thru it and worked out of it many times.borrowing it from a friend up
north. i just never bought it...But, for methe Ken
Sawada book is DEFINATELY worth 10 times more than the benchside reference
could ever be worth to meand that's partly based on the fact
that i have SOOO many pattern books already. So to include the benchside
reference would just be like...well, i'll just go to the 11th
commandment here, lmao.

I can't believe the prices on some books. That AK Best production book I just
snapped up. Now, the next least expensive one on Amazon or Half.com is about
$25-26 (at least from sellers I'd even buy from as the two others at $14 each
are Amazon sellers and they lose half my books I order) and they go on up to
about $95 like I said before. I'm sure the book is worth every dime and then
some. It's just that it's hard for a Po Boy to get up much of a book
collection these days LOL... Chuck
