Sixty maybe sixty-two, we corresponded for several years, he had lung cancer, was treated at the VA and they did admit that agent orange was the cause of his and many other cancer cases they have. He was actually successful in getting a few disability checks from the VA while he was alive. Each year for the past 15 or so I've had one or two friends die of cancer, non smokers all, but all were exposed to agent orange, he was the first to get the VA to come clean. A good friend of mine, who was also an occasional bass player for the band, was a door gunner who was exposed to AO. His health problems weren't as severe as some, but his two kids had strange health problems including congenital ones when they were very young. VA, of course, denied any connection they fought for years to get some of those things corrected. Later on in the war, the govies actually experimented on Army personnel in Nam using AO, but never released the findings. He was a great tyer...but way more importantlya SUPER person...him and Tom Berry were the only two guys from the south who came up and did my show in the Catskills, and they each did it twice. I use to see Charles all over the country and visit him at his home and he here. He LOVED music, and was seriously funny. i'm gonna miss that guy.
