For those interested in the rope-dub dvd...

I got the initial proof/draft DVD for the video tying sequences from the
video-man. I stuck it in the TV and Cheryl sat down to watch it with me.
She was amazed. She's seen me demo-ing the rope-dub for the last 8 years,
but she said the DVD was even better than seeing me tie in person (that's
hard to believe, since I'm so good-lookin'). She was also amazed at how
many tying techniques were included, telling me that I could make 3 DVDs
with that much information. I told her I was already working on DVD #2 and
it had a lot more advanced applications.

>From my standpoint it looked pretty good, but needs a lot more editing and
photo inserts. How many tying sequences are there? 24 that I counted, not
including the talking and fly demo sections, and it doesn't include the
fishing sequence up front or the credits and ad pages at the back. The
rope-dub is so quick, and I'm only tying the tail ends (not the finished
pattern), that the tying sequences don't take very long at all.

There's a lot for someone to work on, but the tying sequences coupled with
various photos should allow pausing and rewinding so that tough parts can be
reviewed. Only problem I could see was that my big 'ol ball-park
frankfingers were getting in the way all the time. We used 2 camera angles,
so hopefully we can get good views of all ties.

I cancelled my trip to Idaho this week-end because of the storm moving in-
supposed to be 2 to 4 feet of snow up in the western mountains
(Jackon/Wilson areas) so the passes may get closed (our route). I'll have
to wait for a later date to meet up with Jack Dennis to review it with him.

>From my first view, I am very satisfied and I'm looking forward to getting a
couple more initial reviews from seasoned tiers.

If you have any questions, please fire away.

And Byard- you get yours for free, of course (signature edition). I'll chat
with you off-list.

[VFB] Re: DVD is here

2009-04-16 Thread DonO

Mike,
I've created a DVD Order folder and am putting all emails of those
interested and of those ordering into it.

Like I mentioned before, VFB'ers get a 25%+/- discount. I'm waiting for
Jack Dennis to view the DVD and get his comments, one of which will be
pricing suggestions.

Since the rope-dub is a technique, not a pattern or recipe, the applications
will be literally for thousands of patterns, both old ones up-graded with
the rope-dub and new ones designed based on the rope-dub's capabilities.
The bottom line, of course, is fishability. With buggy-looking segmentation
and near bullet-proof durability, it's perfect for the flyfisher who wants
great fishing flies. The speed and ease will allow that same tier to tie 5
times as many flies in the same time. If you want to design new patterns,
it extends the realm of 'dubbung' 10-fold, allowing the use of materials for
dubbings and styles of dubbing that haven't been seen before.

[VFB] Re: DVD is here

2009-04-16 Thread Jeff Frye

Don, I was up in Andy's room the other day and he still has that Adams you tied
for him in that hat he was wearing. I just got off the phone with him and he
gets back from the sandbox for the end of this tour in 27 days. He's quite a
bit taller and stronger than when you saw him last. We're all looking forward
to getting some fishing in. I did want to tell you that I teach the rope dub
method to our novice tying class that our club puts on and also refer them to
Byard's site for the instruction. This DVD should help us do a better job with
the learning curve for beginners and with veteran tyers thinking about what fun
materials they can dub with.

I already tie my wooly buggers using the method. It locks in the hackle so that
the fly is more durable.

Exactly what I was thinking. I have several patterns I use regularly
that I would like to modify when I get this down.

You should put a short sampler on U-tube. That way, if the viewers like the
sampler they may be more keen to purchase the DVD.

Mike,
I've created a DVD Order folder and am putting all emails of those
interested and of those ordering into it.

2009-04-16 Thread DonO

Jeff,

Great news about Andy. I'll bet you'll be real happy to see him back for
good.

I know that when you were here, it was a quickky tour, and you got to see a
little of everything. But once you see this DVD, you'll see a big part of
the extent of the technique. That Adams was just the snow on the tip of the
iceberg. You'll have a great time with this DVD.

Don, I was up in Andy's room the other day and he still has that Adams you
tied for him in that hat he was wearing. I just got off the phone with him
and he gets back from the sandbox for the end of this tour in 27 days. He's
quite a bit taller and stronger than when you saw him last. We're all
looking forward to getting some fishing in. I did want to tell you that I
teach the rope dub method to our novice tying class that our club puts on
and also refer them to Byard's site for the instruction. This DVD should
help us do a better job with the learning curve for beginners and with
veteran tyers thinking about what fun materials they can dub with.

Mike,
I've created a DVD Order folder and am putting all emails of those
interested and of those ordering into it.

I got the initial proof/draft DVD for the video tying sequences from the
video-man. I stuck it in the TV and Cheryl sat down to watch it with me. She
was amazed. She's seen me demo-ing the rope-dub for the last 8 years, but she
said the DVD was even better than seeing me tie in person (that's hard to
believe, since I'm so good-lookin'). She was also amazed at how many tying
techniques were included, telling me that I could make 3 DVDs with that much
information. I told her I was already working on DVD #2 and it had a lot more
advanced applications.

From my standpoint it looked pretty good, but needs a lot more editing and
photo inserts. How many tying sequences are there? 24 that I counted, not
including the talking and fly demo sections, and it doesn't include the fishing
sequence up front or the credits and ad pages at the back. The rope-dub is so
quick, and I'm only tying the tail ends (not the finished pattern), that the
tying sequences don't take very long at all.

There's a lot for someone to work on, but the tying sequences coupled with
various photos should allow pausing and rewinding so that tough parts can be
reviewed. Only problem I could see was that my big 'ol ball-park frankfingers
were getting in the way all the time. We used 2 camera angles, so hopefully we
can get good views of all ties.

I cancelled my trip to Idaho this week-end because of the storm moving in-
supposed to be 2 to 4 feet of snow up in the western mountains (Jackon/Wilson
areas) so the passes may get closed (our route). I'll have to wait for a later
date to meet up with Jack Dennis to review it with him.

From my first view, I am very satisfied and I'm looking forward to getting
a couple more initial reviews from seasoned tiers.

If you have any questions, please fire away.

And Byard- you get yours for free, of course (signature edition). I'll
chat with you off-list.

  Mike,
I've created a DVD Order folder and am putting all emails of those
interested and of those ordering into it.

  Like I mentioned before, VFB'ers get a 25%+/- discount. I'm waiting for
Jack Dennis to view the DVD and get his comments, one of which will be
  pricing suggestions.

Since the rope-dub is a technique, not a pattern or recipe, the
  applications
will be literally for thousands of patterns, both old ones up-graded with
the rope-dub and new ones designed based on the rope-dub's capabilities.
The bottom line, of course, is fishability. With buggy-looking
  segmentation
and near bullet-proof durability, it's perfect for the flyfisher who
  wants
great fishing flies. The speed and ease will allow that same tier to tie
  5
times as many flies in the same time. If you want to design new
  patterns,
it extends the realm of 'dubbung' 10-fold, allowing the use of materials
  for
dubbings and styles of dubbing that haven't been seen before.

For those interested in the rope-dub dvd...

I got the initial proof/draft DVD for the video tying sequences from the
video-man. I stuck it in the TV and Cheryl sat down to watch it with me. She

24 that I counted, not
>including the talking and fly demo sections, and it doesn't include the
>fishing sequence up front or the credits and ad pages at the back. The
>rope-dub is so quick, and I'm only tying the tail ends (not the finished
>pattern), that the tying sequences don't take very long at all.

There's a lot for someone to work on, but the tying sequences coupled with
various photos should allow pausing and rewinding so that tough parts can be

>From my first view, I am very satisfied and I'm looking forward to getting a
>couple more initial reviews from seasoned tiers.

If you have any questions, please fire away.

And Byard- you get yours for free, of course (signature edition). I'll chat
with you off-list.

I’ll get one when it is finished. You can never have enough information about
fishing, tying and new or different techniques.

Jim, far as your fly goes...your WAY more than welcome.but your gonna
have to come here and pick it upthere's just no way Jose' to mail this
puppy.also, i forgot to put in the recipe that the body (MoHair) is
picked out as best i could..it's not as easy to do when you use both
strands of the double strand stuff.but when you do use both strands,
it's so beautiful. One strand is just plain MoHair which is the easy part to
pick out..the other strand is a "Sparkle" kinna yarn..you can use
the stuff singlely with either strandor together. In this case i used
them together..hope you like it. i'll get Misa to take a good pic
when we get back from Missouri. We're hittin' the road right now. Later Gators,
mark. p.s. my originall intention was to use a trailer hook on this
fly.but i forgot to put it on.lmao.sorry bout
that..lol..next time.

[VFB] Re: DVD is here- payment

2009-04-16 Thread DonO
Hi Ashley,

I don't know how I'm going to do that yet. I don't have Paypal on my site, but
I may get it if I need it. I do have a few shops interested in carrying the
DVD, who have extensive website programs with payment provisions, shipping,
everything. So I may link my site to those if they want to pay with Paypal.
Just not sure yet, but it won't be a problem anywhichway.

I have made plans with the DVD producer to have the latest in copy-protect
software installed, so that the DVD can't be pirated (unless it's a real
hacker). Not much motivation to spend $2 grand on a DVD to find it
downloadable off of the internet a month after release. If I lose my butt on
#1, that one will be the last of the series, and it'd be a shame, because
Rope-dub #2 and the mouse videos will be just killer. I do intend to keep the
price down now so that there shouldn't be great motivation to pirate it.
