days fishing, very long Sent: Tue, May 28, 2013 8:59:46 PM
My son and two of his friends came up for a few days of Trout fishing. They got
here on Friday afternoon and we took the boat out the first time since last
year. It was a beautiful day but they had four units running so the river was a
bit high. Too high to wade. With four of us in the boat, I could not fly fish,
they were spin fishing. I went along and ran the boat. They caught and released
several nice size Trout while drifting. Saturday morning it was real chilly but
the dam was shut down. We left my dock as soon as the fog lifted and headed up
to Tucker Shoals 1/2 mile up river from my house. Low and behold, someone was
already in the spot that I wanted to fish. They were chucking corn by the hand
full. This really ticked me off. I managed to get by them and above them. This
area is real shallow and not the best spot on the shoals. My son and his two
friends got out and waded and I tried to get on a good spot to anchor the boat.
I am not able to wade
yet. I did not want to drift down river and get too far from my son and his
friends. I had a Chili Demon tied on so I fished with that fly. I caught a real
nice Rainbow that was colored real bright. A beautiful Trout about 16". It was
not too long when I heard a yell. One of my son's friends fell in. I managed to
get to him and took him back to the house. Headed back up to the shoals and it
looked like the river grew a bunch of boats. Most did not know what they were
doing. They motored in front of me and cut me off. Coming out of my dock, I
almost got run into by another boat. Got back up to the shoals and the other
boat was sill there chucking corn. The other one of my sons friends caught a
big Brown I was told. My son said it was about 24". I did not see it. Terry
ended up falling in trying to land it so I took him back to the house. I got
back up to the shoals and got a call on my cell phone from a visiting friend,
he was at my house and wanted
to fish with me. Back to the dock to pick him up. When I left the dock,
something happened to my tiller. I was having a hard time shifting and
controlling the throttle. I managed to get back up to Tucker and start fishing
again. I let my friend off to wade. The water at the pool was flat and smooth
as glass, no breeze at all. Fish were rising all over the place but I could not
see any bugs. I must of changed flies a dozen times but no hits. I did notice a
very small midge like bug on my hand and wondered if that was what they were
taking. It was about a sz 32. My friend waded back over to where I was and
tried several flies but did no good. He is a far better fly fisherman than I
am. Then all of a sudden the wind came up and I decided I had enough. More and
more idiots on the water. My son waded over and was ready to come in too. My
friend was staying at the resort 1/2 mile from my house so he asked if I could
take him back there so his wife would not
have to come to the house to get him,
That brought on another problem. The channel is real narrow with thick weeds on
one side and gravel bars on the other side. There were boats in the channel
fishing and they had no regards for the boats that were trying to use the
channel. I got down to the resort ok but coming back up the current was a
problem with the throttle not working like it should. I got on a gravel bar and
got hung up. My son had to get out of the boat and pull it along. Boats were
coming down the channel and would not give us an inch. My son finally pulled me
back up to the dock. By now I was really ticked off. I normally would not go
out on a holiday weekend.
I checked the tiller and found a screw that holds a bracket for the shifting
and throttle rod had fallen out. Not sure what size screw it was, we decided to
go to the Mercury dealer and get a screw. We went to the three dealers in the
area and none of then had a replacement screw. I finally found one at the
hardware store and fixed the problem.
They wanted to go back out on Sunday but the dam was running five units, Too
much water for me to take the boat out. They went to a friends pond but did not
stay long. The pond was loaded with moss. Later in the day the dam dropped down
to three units so the boys took the boat up to White Hole for a five mile
drift. I did not go with them as Dot thought I was pushing it a bit. They only
caught six Trout between them in that five miles where last year

Good to hear you are improving  and you got out Tony.  After  my daughter's
pancreas calms down I may get in my first fishing of the season.
