[videoblogging] Costume Suggestions for Bush

2005-10-28 Thread Hugh Beall

Yesterday and today I did two video two pieces, one is five minutes long, and the other one is two and a half minutes.

I asked the question, What should Bush wear to the Halloween Ball?
Take a look–– and I appreciate any comments you care to make. Thanks.

2005-10-28 Thread Jan McLaughlin
Loving this thread.

After meeting Walter Wright at Lowell (MA) Telecommunications Center
and seeing his lecture on the history of video mixing, I was hooked on
the idea of VJ'ing.

At about the same time, purchased a large projector.

I'm ready.

The VJ's I met at Lowell were of the same stripe as vloggers,
technically; there's an intersection of interest for sure that will
benefit both communities.

Let the dialog begin.

 Hi Bertrand...
I hear you - but we're meant to be encouraging these video bloggers
to play with the VJ stuff ;-)
I rarely record gigmixes either... though it's always fruitful when I
 do...
i think the real-time tools and skills though, aside from being used
 at gigs -
are great for also cutting together clips in your own time...

i'm very interested in applying the same amount of work to say a

And well, video projections in a club or on stage with some extra

 Aye :-)
and watching a clip at home - or on a handheld is also a different

 greetings meester falk :-)

i wasn't saying VJs videobloggers will overthrow mainstream media...

am just trying to encourage some more cross VJ / video blogger
dialogue is all.. and think that if more video people investigated
each other's communities, we'd have a greater skilled set of video
people - able to better produce, showcase, and distribute their work...

I've really enjoyed being part of both communities ( actively within
VJing, mostly reading within the videoblogging circuit ) and have
been surprised there hasn't been more crossover...

Making compelling content *is* difficult, agreed - whether you spend
half a day or half a month on something... but I guess what seems
novel at the moment - is the sense of opportunity for those who might
wish to make compelling content, to be able to distribute this more
easily than ever before... which will only increase as handhelds and
 mobile phone video takes off...

The same way sites like boing boing have emerged to stake out a
niche, a channel, a brand even - videoblog sites like rocketboom are
starting to carve out niches for themselves

a lot of video iPod and itunes users are starting to wander around to
see what kinds of video they can download... and compared to cable tv
their isnt much there at the moment in terms of dedicated channels -
some of these 'channels' could feasibly be filled by VJs who are into
graphic design and animation and post a new clip each week, some
could be filled by VJs who manage to tell a story with their work

what's interesting is that we seem to have a window to *invent* some
of these channels now... or even invent a new format - some hybrid
between a serialised tv show, blog and online computer game...? the
pipes are falling into place, with the right tools and thoughtful
 architecture much is possible :-)

.. and i like the idea of *more* channels made by people from the
ground up rather than beamed down from the mighty towers to fill the
 perceived gaps...
how many of those 'ground-up' channels figure out a way to pay
themselves, who knows... but ze opportunities are there...

it's good to see your video blog

[videoblogging] Making Quicktime on a PC

2005-10-28 Thread Frank Carver

Folks,

I've been having some discussion with Ryanne Hodson after she put up a
really useful Quicktime on a PC tutorial screencast
URL
http://freevlog.org/wordpress/index.php/2005/10/25/create-a-quicktime-mov-from-windows-movie-maker/

I was puzzled by the choice of IMA 4:1 as an audio codec. This
seemed strange to me, because all the recommendations on the list up
to now have been for either AAC or MP4A. The problem is that Neither
Ryanne nor I have either of those as options on any of the random mix
of PC video software that we have to hand.

I'm worried that us PC users may not be able to make sensible
standard Quicktime movies (that play on an iPod, for example)

Has _anyone_ successfully used a PC to create a Quicktime movie using
recommended settings for an iPod, or to use any of the settings suggested by
Verdi on 25 October 2005 in the size/quality shootout. For example:

Settings. Let me start with H.264.
 Video
 320 X 240
 15fps
 Automatic keyframes
 restrict bit rate to 355kbits/sec
 compressor quality high
 Better quality (multi-pass)

 Audio
 Format - AAC
 Sample rate 24 kHz
 Bit rate 24kbps

 Fast Start enabled

Does purchasing Quicktime Pro for PC allow you to do this? Does
Quicktime Pro for the PC offer a working export to iPod option?
Can ffmpeg or any other third-party software do this on a PC ?

I know there must be PC users creating Quicktime on this list, please
help!

[videoblogging] PC magazine article on iPod, PMC, video-blogs

2005-10-28 Thread B Yen

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1877071,00.aspPMC (Portable Media Center):"Golly, I guess Jobs missed the memo about portable media centers. Roughly a year ago, Microsoft and its partners rolled out a new operating system and series of handheld devices that could play music and display photos and video (TV and full-length movies). The products were billed as the ultimate portable media devices—go-anywhere, do-anything consumer electronics wonders. The Creative Zen, easily the best of the bunch, was a slick-looking black unit that offered a brilliant and fairly large (for a handheld device) screen.""Interestingly, Sony and the new entrant into the portable-media market, Apple, have something important in common. Both are marketing mavericks. Everyone knows what an iPod is, and in the PSP's relatively short lifespan, Sony has managed to shove the game machine into the cultural zeitgeist; it's showing up in TV, movies, and articles that aren't even about the PSP. PMCs have not yet had their 15 minutes of fame, and I'm not sure they ever will.""I tend to agree with IDC that studio-created or long-form content won't be what help insure the PMC's success. If people are to start watching video on the train, the content will have to be in short bite-size pieces. Who really wants to get through Star Wars Revenge of the Sith in 20-minute increments during commutes? But a 10-minute news or weather brief? That's different.According to Martin, that kind of content—and even video blogs—could help transform the PMC market. I have to say, though, I don't get audio blogs (podcasting's precursor). And while everyone calls podcasting a big success, I wonder if the interest in it is purely a by-product of the vast number of iPods in the field."

[videoblogging] Re: MP4 H.264

2005-10-28 Thread havilahland33
I really like the quality of the H264 format and can tell quite a
difference from the MP4. Although recently I noticed that Firefox
seems to have a little trouble playing a H264 video feed that I made,
but it will play on IE. Also that video was amazing, great job.

--- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Steve Watkins [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Thanks for the post Andrew. I should have raised the issue in a nice
way, but I can be a git sometimes.

Anyway the file does play on windows, in many different ways:

 Quicktime 7
 Nero Showtime
 VLC
Windows media player ( any other directshow-codec-supporting video
app) via installation of some h264 support thats too complicated to
 explain now.

The average windows user may not have any of the above options
available to them right now, but it bodes well for the future that
people arent limited to quicktime as the only playback solution.

I dont know if it works on the ipod, I havent got one yet, but if its
been encoded with main profile, rather than baseline, then it wont.

The PSP is a pig for compatibility. As well as the normal resolution
restraints, the file format is slightly non-standard (hence qt encoded
h264 wont work), the framerate must be listed as 30 in the video file
(even if the real framerate is different, then this causes audio-video
snc issues) and also filename issues. After changing the filename of
rb oct 21, it still didnt play on the PSP v2. How did you encode?

When it comes to issues with PSPs v2 not playing h264, yeah thats an
additional complication for sure. I wonder what proportion of PSP
users are intot he hackss and homebrew, here in the UK the PSP shipped
with v2 firmware so theres probably less people with 1.5 here. I
originally assumed youd be offering normal mpeg4 and h264, I think I
hoped for this because rocketboom has done such a good job of
supporting multiple formats throughout its first year, so take it as a
 compliment that I was dissapointed.

Its certainly possible to crate a h264 file that will play on the Mac,
PC and PSP. I am unsure at this stage whether a PSP-compatible h264
file can alo be made to work on the ipod, it depends if the additional
sony atom structures that the PSP requires, causes incompatibility
with video ipod. And whether baseline/main profile differences between
the 2 devices scupper this plan.

As for the playback performance of h264, yes its intensive. Its most
likly that both the PSP and the ipod use a seperate decoder chip to
handle h264, and thats why software-only decoding is struggling on
older computers and handheld devices in comparison.

I will post some details of my PSP encoding experiences using both a
PC and mac in the coming days.

 Cheers

Other people seem to believe that the H.264 quality is good, but my
guess is they are comparing the quality per filesize or bitrate. It
seems the quality per decoding or MHz performance is either equal
or below other encoders: just my guess based on my experience
playing back on a Pocket PC. The some_postman video that came
around was supposed to be 25fps and 800kbit/s, played back with
about 70% dropped frames at 7.778 fps.

Your post of 14.985 fps and 800 kbit/s worked with 136/3169 dropped
frames. Fairly low dropout (playback fps of 14.342). I'm showing
Audio: MPEG4 AAC Audio, AAC0 (Codec LibFAAD LC, HE,Ps AAC, 32kHz
Mono) and Video: AVC aka H.264, AVC1 (FFmpeg AVC).

Plays back pretty good on a 500+MHz VGA Pocket PC.

I was hoping H.264 would also be a clear winner as well. You can get
better playback performance with something like DivX, I think. I
haven't done extensive testing, but the H.264 videos that people
seem to be making are all (so far that I've tested) taxing to the
  playback system.

Incidently I love that song AND video. Sounds like a 1950's-era
scat. The only thing that seems to give it away is the rushing snare
roll, which I don't think I've ever heard in earlier music before
(not that I listen to much of it, though). I could be all wrong on
that, but either way: sounds great! And that framerate plays back
  decently on my Pocket PC.

[videoblogging] CNN/AP article totally missed it

2005-10-28 Thread David Meade

CNN has an article about the video iPod and I found it expectidly
lacking of knowledge about whats going on with video/internet today:
==
Movie
studios, television networks and other content providers must determine
whether there's money to be made in Apple's latest online venture
without cannibalizing their existing businesses.

While waiting for the number of
titles to grow, iPod owners can fill their players with home movies and
other video, provided their software can encode the video in a
supported format (H.264 or MPEG-4 video) and other specifications.

... {snip}...

Though watching home movies is fun, the promise of commercial content will interest a lot more people. But there's no indication when more TV shows or even movies might arrive on an iPod near you.

In the meantime, there's always music.

um ... in the meantime there are countless video blogs out there people!!! :-P
