[videoblogging] Re: LibSyn won't embed QT in Safari?

2006-01-04 Thread LeanBackVids.com
Yeah, I've been in email contact w/ Charlie since the surf/skate/snow
promo hit the ITMS Podcasts page just before Xmas. They've had one
hell of a start in vlogging...

http://www.vlogmap.org/feedburner/fbfeed.php?fbid=negativegravity/snowfix/video

As for Safari, it represents over 10% of our visitors. I'd rather not
support (or should I say pay for) a service that has such bugs.

HOLY SHIT!!! I just realized that Dreamhost has just QUADRUPLED disk
space on all their shared hosting plans and also OCTUPLED (eight
times) bandwidth on all plans.

Awesome! Now I'm off to cancel LibSyn. Viva la Safari!

2006-01-04 Thread LeanBackVids.com
I just signed up for LibSyn today since my bandwidth is out of
control, but it looks like Quicktime videos do not load in Safari when
embedded inside a page.

Here is my test page...
http://ridertech.com/test.php

Any other LibSyn users notice this? I think it may be caused by all
their backend redirect. Sadly, this may be my first and last month.

welcome Leslie.
its exciting to see print journalists jump into videoblogging.

check out what Sandeep is doing.
he is also a print journalist, freelancing for NY Times.
after doing an article on videoblogging, he decided to try it himself.
last summer he posted on the web that he was going to go to India to
record people who have AIDS. He got 7,000$ in donations.
this was enough for him and friend to spend 6 weeks in India.
Its a great videoblog.

I don't usually use the group to announce new posts of mine, but it's been

I got my new

The two posts are about the Guadalupe fiesta here in San Cristobal de Las

Mexico that takes place every year in December. See them on my blog:
droppedframes.blogspot.com

to see the text explanations of the fiesta or just view them on blip if you're
the visual

This one shows the home made rockets being hand-launched

http://blip.tv/file/get/Jack-Bombs249.mov

These will be of interest if you like things Mexican or if you are like me a

BTW, I have noted recently, to my delight, that large entities like this, Creative Labs, Intel and especially TiVo, have opted to use the nomenclature "videoblog" or "vlog" as opposed to "video podcast". It's a nice affirmation, I think, that they are seeing that videoblogging is a bigger picture then video podcasting, and the pod word is too sensitive for other companies to use because Apple often sues people for using words that are too similar to their own stuff. On Jan 4, 2006, at 6:01 PM, andrew michael baron wrote: Creative Labs just rolled out their competitor to iTunes, Zencast:This is an aggregator and directory.http://www.zencast.com/Begin forwarded message:From: andrew michael baron <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>Date: December 19, 2005 12:47:54 AM ESTTo: videoblogging@yahoogroups.comSubject: [videoblogging] Creative Zen SpecsReply-To: videoblogging@yahoogroups.com The new Creative Zen player which seems to have ripped off the design  of the iPod is suing Apple for ripping off their software interface.  I just got the go ahead to post the specs for the new player which I  believe may be the first public mention. The same thing happened to my feed, perhaps 3 weeks ago. It has not

I think this may have something to do with the rapid growth of the database. Anyone else have an idea?

[videoblogging] Fwd: VLOGDIR: videoblogger promo banners wanted

2006-01-04 Thread Michael Sullivan

Hey all and all elseA new reminder for a new year to any vlogger interested in adding a banner image for your vlogs to be included in the random rotation on vlogdir.com.  please send images to me.  Details are in original thread below.
And thanks/you're welcome to those who have submitted banners already. They look cool! Also, do keep in mind that you are able to upload both a logo and intro video to your vlogdir videoblog entries.  One of my favorite vlogs is a good example:
http://vlogdir.com/permalink/265Their is also an option to add a teaser video (remote url).  Some intermix these intro and teaser video options which is fine... but i'd love to see actual introductions of vloggers telling the audience a little bit about themselves and their vlog project(s) etc So please feel free to take advantage of this if interested.
I could also use some feedback and bug reports.  Can email me direct or use the vlogdir forum:http://vlogdir.com//forum/index.phpThanks and Happy New Year from all of us at vlogdir... i mean, all of me ;-).

Re: [videoblogging] iPod QT m4v format problems

2006-01-04 Thread T.Whid

You shouldn't rename it to .MOV.Add the MIME type for M4V to your server instead. This will fix the problem with browsers handling the file in the wrong way (downloading as plain text).I use the mime type video/mp4 for M4V files on my server (suggested by J. Kinberg on this list).
If you don't know how to set the mime type, do a search for "addtype" and  ".htaccess". Some hosted servers don't allow .htaccess files. You can also add mime types to IIS if you are running your own Windows server.

Hello Vloggers,Thanks for eveyones help yesterday.  I have installed the feed enclosure plugin and it seems to be working great and it improved the reliability of the feed.  I'm not sure I understand the difference between the atom.xml and the RSS index.xml output files for Moveable Type so if anyone can explain I would appreciate it.Anyway the feed seems to work better, but when downloads are done using iTunes through a podcast subscription ... the file looks like it is downloading and then when it completes it does not load the file as if it is the wrong format and leaves and exclaimation mark next to it instead.  Likewise when i click on the link in the block to access the same file I am taken to a page with the quicktime logo as it downloads and that logo eventually turns into a Question Mark indicating it does not know what to do with the file.  FireAnt on the other hand has no problem downloading the file and playing it ... I have another problem there however in that FireAnt attempts to play the QT file and our Flashfile in the RSS feed viewer below the video so that provides some confusion. Now one thing that you should know is I have exported the files using QT pro to the M4V format but renamed the files with the MOV suffix.  I did this because previously when I had uploaded files with the M4V extension and tried to view them through the web with a browser I got back text encoding in the browser rather than the QT File.  I have had more luck with the MOV extension. To check out our blog and feed go to ...http://www.choosecast.com/charlotte/lifeseensfeed://feeds.feedburner.com/choosecast/charlotte/lifeseensHELP!  Anyone have any insight into why I am having file format or transfer problems with the QT files? Hi JD --Nice job on the site. I like the concept.> I also think a year from now, a heck of a lot of us will be using H.264.I hope. I launched a new vlog last month, and made the beginner's mistake of using QT7 H.264. The quality was phenomenal, considering the small file size.Unfortunately, I received a ton of complaints. Few people have QT7,and most couldn't be bothered to download it. As a result, I re-rendered them to Flash.> I've only been able to test it on a PC (firefox and ie) and 15-inch> Mac Powerbook (firefox and safari), so if you see anything that looks> funny in other displays, please let me know.FYI: I'm using IE6 w/ 17" screen, and this is what I see:http://www.hotbizz.com/images/Real-People-Network.jpgI have a feeling you didn't plan to have that vertical line goingdown  through the search box. for picking apart my mailing lists and highlighting threads onvarious subjects such as particular people, webservices, productmentions, etc. etc.Even if you're NOT using gmail as your primary mail account I find it
works perfect for these sort of mailing lists to keep them seperatefrom your personal mail because these mailing lists can clog up amost peoples email and cause them to miss more important personal mail.

So you either put the credits somewhere else where the real estate
isn't so valuable or try to make the typography so clear and bold that
it can withstand resizing.

I'm a big proponent of getting rid of the credit roll alltogether, and
putting a permalink on the close and all the commercial bumps. There
are some downsides to this, of course. As an audio guy, first on my
list is there's no longer a place to put that music cue that didn't
work where it was supposed to, but is cool anyway, or the pop song the
megastar did for your movie that you hate but have to include for
marketing reasons.

We have to approach this with a (very) critical eye, however. To what
extent *does* this video allow us to "really see what our leaders do
all day"? What does it include and, much more importantly, what does
it leave out? That the video was compiled from ten days of footage,
not one, is perhaps telling. What's more, perhaps an 'ordinary' day in
the life of a Prime Minister--especially Blair--isn't what's
important. This is one instance where the quotidian focus of
videoblogging hides more than it reveals. I want to know about the
extraordinary days--the days when Bush calls, terrorists attack,
torture gets approved, death tolls come in. That the major mode of
address in the video is an interview in which Blair discusses his
duties in the first-person is also important. Again, in this instance,
I think it hides more than it reveals (though it could also reveal by
hiding, and kind of does; that the war isn't mentioned merely draws
attention to the fact that the war isn't mentioned). Like any personal
videoblogger, Blair is free to mediate the way he comes across--he
performs, creates an image or idea of himself and his job that he'd
want the viewers of the video to accept. I want to see the videoblog
of someone on Blair's periphery is what I want to see. Someone who
shoots him (with a camera, of course!) when he's unaware that he's
being shot (unlikely, but I can dream), who shoots him when he okays
the use of white phosphorous in Iraq. I want D. A. Pennebaker to go to
10 Downing Street is what I want. I want fly-on-the-wall video of our
politicians, not officially sanctioned stuff. Because first-person
videoblogs (and I consider this to be in the first-person, despite its
third-person footage, its major mode of address being Blair's voice
discussing himself) has its limitations. This sort of video is one of
them. Why should we believe the reality of Blair's video? What does it
really say about his day? I would wager very little. This question is
actually something we should be asking about all videoblogs, of
course, not just about Blair's video. As so many of Richard BF's
videos prove (to those of us who know that the character of Richard BF
is a rich, messy mix of reality and fiction), we take a lot on faith
in this community. I suspect that Blair is capitalising on those
connections we still tend make between amateur or home video and
unmediated reality. I say a day in the life on Tony Blair would have a
lot more--a lot more that he doesn't want us to see--going on.

I'm thinking about this concept of "Real People Network" you've
created here, and I can't help but think what would happen if you
allowed more people to contribute interviews with "Real People." They
would not have to be connected in some way with technology, just
interviews, conversation, oral history...

Obviously this sort of thing is not new, but it would be really great
to develop a well tagged and searchable archive of interviews with
"Real People."

Re: [videoblogging] more...iPod...must see link...

2006-01-04 Thread Ron Watson

I find fault in the premise that we have free and open markets. We do not. We have a global economy dominated by the large 1st world economies. These economies are allowed to subsidize, to manipulate, and to otherwise stomp on the smaller players on the planet. When our airlines fail, we bail them out because of the importance to our economy. When an agrarian economy in the third world fails, they must de-regulate, divest, and sell off control to the 1st world players that create the rules. They are not allowed to prop up their vital sectors regardless of the impact to their economy. The reality of our current global economic situation is that it is several large countries and giant multinational banks that dictate the rules of the game to the 2nd and 3rd world countries. Not only do they dictate the rules, they make them. Not only do they make them, they manipulate them for profit. It is the same as the web. Free markets are a lie; they don't exist. They have never been tried.Every single industry (major industry) has been built on, propped up by, or heavily dependent upon public funding. If you can tell me one that was not, I will eat my laptop. The only thing that 'free markets' have brought about is the facade of economic improvement and a transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich. Real wages are stagnant from the 60s, and if I had to guess, they have gone down in the last 5 years. Millions of Americans are in poverty and hungry with no health care. We can't make anything in this country anymore. Personal and national debt are at historic highs. On the flip side, corporate profits are at record highs. The gap between rich and poor are at a historic high. This is what 'free markets' have given us, and this is why I have problems with them. This is entirely perverse, and any system that allows this to happen is immoral, and I will challenge anyone to tell me that this is the kind of system that is good for the planet. Our economy is in the shitter. Oh sure, our GDP is up, but what kind of measure of health is that? GDP is total spending. If everyone on this list got a disease that cost $10 mil year to treat that would be huge GDP growth. Is that good for our economy? Does that make us any stronger in terms of world economics? Maybe we could give that disease to all of our people and really challenge the soon to be dominant Chinese economy. 'Free markets', status quo, are nothing more than a corporate power grab, enabled by a corporate media, and a corporate sponsored government. They enable the strong to prey on the weak. For billions of people on this planet they represent either a race to the bottom, or a cap on standards of living. On Jan 4, 2006, at 2:54 AM, Michael Meiser wrote: Disclaimer: not totally proofread... So a network that is twice as large will be four times as valuable because there are four times as many things that can be done due to the larger number of interconnections. Because of Metcalfe's Law, the largest network always wins over smaller networks, even if the smaller network has some larger initial value due to some special-purpose feature or benefit.First, realize that the free and open web IS the largest network.  All other networks are secondary, especially cellular networks... for them to do information services such as audio, video, etc... but isolate themselves from the information services of the web at large is going to hurt them... increasingly... until the start opening up their networks and allowing outside services. This is like them offering voice to voice calling only between other people on their network. Once the idea is proposed, once one network's wall is breached there will be no going back as sure as there's no going back to in-operable separate phone networks.More reading along this subject...good depth: http://www.useit.com/alertbox/990725.htmlmore on metcalf'shttp://gonze.com/weblog/index.cgi/2005/03/31#3-30-5    When two networks merge, "the smaller network gains considerably more than the larger one.
