[videoblogging] Re: What does Apple like in a Video Podcast?

2006-01-25 Thread Ms. Kitka
Mark,

I was reading about how to be a Featured Video Podcast on iTunes the
other day and (off the top of my head) the requirements were as follows:

- Show image must conform to iTunes' standard 300x300 pixels;
- Must have an in depth description;
- Must be properly categorized (ie. This or That = Entertainment,
Kitkast = News, etc.);
- Sexual content will not be featured (which probably means you and
me, kiddo.)

Btw, I'll be reviewing you on my show this week... This or That TV
will finally have a place on Kitkast... ;)

I posted this recently in the new Apple 'podcast producer's Forum'.
I don't normally cross post my opinions but I thought folks here might
have something to say about it...

 http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=328594tstart=0

I am a producer of a video podcast that represents a completely
independent (no money) television show and the work of over 30
volunteers. But, it seems that we are not the kind of video podcast
that Apple likes. And so we are trying to figure out what Apple does
like.

 Our podcast:
This or That! America's Favorite Burlesque Game Show
 Video blog: http://thisorthat-video.blogspot.com
 Video blog feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/ThisOrThat-video
 ITunes Podcast listing:

http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=74172010

We were thrilled to hear that Apple would add poddcasts to iTunes and
were one of the first podcasts listed back last June. We have been
posting in the mp4 file format (video ipod compatible) since June as
well.

We were also listed by mefeedia, an independent video blog directory,
aggregator, and web based player last spring. Mefeedia lists over 4300
video blogs that you can subscribe to.
 http://www.mefeedia.com/feeds/
And we are listed on at least 20 other podcast directories that list
video podcasts, I use mefeedia as an example because they cater
 exclusively to video podcasts.

We have never been a featured anything in the iMusic Store and are
baffled by how Apple chooses what they like. Near the top of their Top
podcast list are French Maid TV, and Tiki Bar TV. Well, folks say you
need a little titillation to keep the Apple programers happy. But not
so, we are a burlesque show with plenty of salacious activities,
visual excitement, and an explicit warning, but this does not get us
onto any of Apple's prefered lists.

Well you need to be popular Apple says (in their official FAQ listing
of what it takes to be a featured podcast). Well we are popular, just
not with Apple. On mefeedia, we are the 4th most popular video podcast
out of over 4300. But on Apples site we are below the noise floor.
(Its worth noting that the top 3 on mefeedia are not in Apples Top 100
 either).

We have only 5 star reviews on Apple's site and no bad reviews (so
 far) on mefeedia or Apple.

As for Apples other technical requirements, we meet them all.

Including the fact that our video podcast is taking off. It is being
seen around the world, with a larger audience than we would ever have
achieved on public access TV or even as a regular web page.

We realize that Apple has no reason to be fair about this, they are a
corporation attempting to make money after all. If fairness (or the
promotion of home produced podcasts) was the point, Apple would simply
rotate the featured podcasts, say every week or so, so that all
decently produced podcasts would get a chance to be seen and heard.

Apple does not seem to be in business to support or promote home
grown independent efforts like our own (and most of the podcast
community). They seem to have decided that the only way to make money
is to promote commercial products, like all those FOX podcasts, and
now the NBC and ABC television libraries.

The Apple FAQ states, In most cases, we avoid promotion of podcasts
that are themselves merely promotions for other media products, such
as films or albums. But that statement is at odds with what they do
feature. If they are going to make this kind of statement they need a
new category: Featured non-profit podcasts. There are many of us who
have produced `other media products, such as films and albums' and TV
shows that have had little success in other forms, but when they are
translated into podcasts, folks start listening and watching.

It seems this statement, we avoid promotion of podcasts that are
themselves merely promotions for other media products, such as films
or albums, really means, we avoid any content that might compete
 with our revenue generating content.

I realize that this may sound like sour grapes on my part, but we are
 genuinely frustrated here.
I would love to hear other independant podcast producers tell me I am
 wrong.

Have a look at our podcast if you like.
Let me know if you have had a similar or different experience. I would
love to be convinced that I have

However, that introduction to this group allowed us to receive very

So we'd like to officially introduce ourselves as YouAre.TV. We

currently a very underserved portion of that space, independent people
who have quality video that they actually care about. They care about
how it is presented, how it is distributed, and they also care about
the communities they create around their video. If you look at our
site and how content is laid out, it is very unique from all other
copycat videos sites out there.

Based on the great feedback we have received from this group and
others we have:
• Updated our terms of use to read a lot clearer. The first line reads
You retain all ownership rights of any content you upload to the
YouAre.TV website
• We have added a blog where we hope can be a sounding board for our
users.
• We have added a faqs section to our site with mostly video
conversion info (until we get flash in the site).

Our most recent feature release has been dubbed Get your video out
there since users are now uploading their great video to YouAre.TV we
know you'll want to share it…Get your video out there includes:

• Send this video to a friend by email.
• RSS for top videos, keywords, tags, and your video profiles.

Andrew mentioned not too long ago that he is using this for rocketboom's
text tracks (probably chapters and links): URL:

I have worked out a way to make creation of chapter tracks easier than

[videoblogging] Canadian TV station that shows vlogs

2006-01-25 Thread Steve Garfield
Hi,
I was telling someone about the Canadian TV station that accepts video
content on it's website and then shows it on TV, but I can't find the
site.

Can you post a link here if you know it?

Thanks,

I checked the RSS feed on one of the producer pages.
No enclosures there for aggregators to pick up.

Yup, enclosures would be nice... Also, I'd recommend using utf-8 over
iso-8859-1 for serving the feeds (and all pages really.)

You might also want to add the Last-Modified and ETag headers when
serving your RSS feeds, this will probably help your servers when you
get a lot of aggregators subscribing to the feeds...

So you will be syndicating Flash FLV files using RSS enclosures?
If that's the case, then FireAnt is the only aggregator that supports
this at the moment.
Flash may be more lightweight but its certainly not as portable.

However, that introduction to this group allowed us to receive very
frank and valuable feedback which we have taken very seriously. We
have focused much of our efforts thinking about this over the past two
   weeks.

So we'd like to officially introduce ourselves as YouAre.TV. We
launched in beta January 7th 2006. We think the online video space
will be very large, and we are focusing our efforts on what is
currently a very underserved portion of that space, independent people
who have quality video that they actually care about.

The first
 line reads
You retain all ownership rights of any content you upload to the
   YouAre.TV website
   • We have added a blog where we hope can be a sounding board
 for our

   • Permalinks for videos and profiles

We have also added the ability to leave comments on videos.

We are excited about the community that has been growing daily in our
two weeks of life, we look forward to continuing to give you the best

Ok, this should be fixed now. Thanks for letting us know.
Also, as Jay said, we have a 1-click subscription button. I'm going to
be writing a little code generator soon so you can enter your feed URL
and copy-paste the code into your website. Then your viewers simply
click that button and FireAnt will launch and subscribe to your feed.
Give me a day or so to get this going...

Your player is heavy? The quick view characteristics of RSS?

I don't understand those statements, can you elaborate?

To add enclosures to your feeds should be a very minimal thing (as long
as your system was well designed.) Of course if providing enclosures
within the feed does not fit with your goals, that is understandable,
but coming out and saying so would make more sense. (If that is the case...)

Absolutely, as in: you can't play Flash on your video iPod. Do you
really want to ignore the iPod market? It's a big choice, and Flash is
the somewhat easier choice technically, but not necessarily the best

some kind of browser-sniffing because Opera does support Ajax. So I
considered Greasemonkey-ing my way out of it (because Opera has native

I found the blog post permalinks. If I click to see the video preview I

[videoblogging] Video blogging from Luke Skywalker's house, sort of...

2006-01-25 Thread Andy Carvin
Hi everyone,

The Associated Press asap news service is running a multimedia feature
story of mine about Star Wars tourism in southern Tunisia, which was
used in the movies for the scenes on Luke Skywalker's home planet. The
story features text, photos and two videos, which document the night I
spent sleeping in Luke's house, which is actually an underground hotel
in a Berber village. Since I can't run the videos myself on my vlog, I
figured I'd send out this note.

[videoblogging] Re: new strmz.com beta

2006-01-25 Thread petertheman

The site is a mashup of programming from major media outlets; popular
video-blogs and podcasts; and top-rated content from video upload
services

Nothing against mashup services, and I hope this one has a great
future, but I see a problem:

- major media outlets
- popular videoblogs
- top-rated content

If you focus on major, popular and top-rated, you will not add
any real value in letting discovering people cool stuff. The only way
to add value as a mash-up service or aggregator is to show people
obscure, unknown or unpopular stuff that is good, that you have
discovered.

Just a tip :) Don't focus on the popular or you're competing with AOL
video on *their* terms. Better to compete with them by offering us
something different.

Actually, one of the other things about this directory that is maybe a little different than others is that it also appears *inside* FireAnt.So, displaying direct download links are a little problematic if users are browsing from within FireAnt and would expect the download links to actually download and play inside FireAnt.
Its a bit of a quandry, but I'm sure we'll figure out the right solution.-joshOn 1/25/06, Clint Sharp

Hehe. :o)
In Opera I get ?ajax=off appended to all links. I'm wondering what kind
of
Ajax-y goodness I'm missing out on and I'm wondering if FireANT is
doing
some kind of browser-sniffing because Opera does support Ajax. So I
considered Greasemonkey-ing my way out of it (because Opera has native

Greasemonkey support and it rocks).

I found the blog post permalinks. If I click to see the video preview
I
get the links. Maybe turning the blog post title into a link is an idea.

We had it that way for a while (titles as permalinks) and it's
confusing as hell for the user. They're not expecting to be taken off
site when every other link on the site drills down. Besides, clicking
on a channel gets you a buttload of details about the channel,
including the ability to preview or queue all their past feed items.

I'll test in Opera to see if our AJAX libraries work. It's actually
something I plan on fixing, but the ajax=off is added actually for
Safari, which pukes with Rico, our AJAX library. It's also there for
the search engines and other browsers I can't verify AJAX support in as
well. I've hand coded another method for getting content in to Safari
(which is missing XML Serialization and an html properly on the
returned AJAX object, so neither IE nor FireFox's methods for getting
the XHTML from the xmlhttp object back work in Safari, but I have found
another method for doing it with responseText, which is a bit poorer,
but does work, I just haven't adapted the Preview window to use it yet).

We don't provide direct links to the media. Is this something people
would like to see? You can queue it and easily get that info out of
the RSS, but I'm not sure people would like us hotlinking to their
media files. What do other people think? I don't want to start
another debate about whether media files should be seperated from
Videoblog posts (direct downloads), but should we offer hotlinks to the
media for download?

Yep. Its a callback service provided by Skype. You don't talk to a
person, just a recording of one. :-)
