[videoblogging] Re: What does Apple like in a Video Podcast?

2006-01-26 Thread Mark Cyr
Thanks for the response. I'm mostly irritated that Apple is trying to
treat the podcasting community like we are the 'television audience',
like its one way communication from them and they really don't want to
hear what the audience is thinking.

My problem is that at the moment I want the bandwidth hit; strangely
enough I need it to help prove the audience is there in order to
generate support for keeping our show going. We are not just a
podcast but a full blown theater and television show requiring the
committment of lots of folks, so every thing we do has to keep at
least generating buzz to keep everyone engaged.

The great thing about having a feed is knowing that there is an
audience waiting however...

Hope you find the time to keep watching, now we'll go check you out too.

Mark

In mild climates, the cherry blossom patch tends to bloom in full
about one week after the opening of the first blossoms and then peaks
out only one week later.  Wind and rain can cut the blooming season
even shorter. The saying "knee-high by the 4th of July" is used by farmers in Indiana as a measurement of a good year for corn.  If the stalks reach a grown man's knees by July 4th, the harvest will come sooner than usual that year.

hosting, which, again is not the cheapest around.

i figured for $9.24, i could use it for scratch space, check out
Dreamhost and wordpress since everyone seems to like them and grab a
new domain name. so i did.

of course, in a year, the competition will be offering 10x more for

  Install
and run the free Grouper 2.0 software on your PC from http://grouper.com or from download.com (sorry, no OS X version yet). No spyware or adware.

  Click on
the 'Public Share' command and choose video clip(s) to share. All major
formats are supported - MOV, MPG, AVI, MPG4, WMV, etc...
Wait a minute or two until the status of your newly shared clip(s)
changes to 'shared' from 'uploading'.

  Right-click
on any shared clip and choose 'Browse Public Page', in this html page
you'll find the HTML code to copy and paste into your blog.

  You and your
blog viewers can now:

  Stream up
to 3 minutes of your video clips directly from your blog using Windows,
Macs, IE, Safari or Firefox

  Download
the clip to the Apple iPod Video or the Sony PSP video players –
Grouper automatically generates an iPod Video compatible MP4 file from
your video – you don't need to do any conversion. This works for any
format of video to you share.

   Download
the raw original video clip (no limit on file size or duration) using
p2p distributed downloads technology – you'll need leave Grouper
running on your computer for this to work.

  You also
automatically get a Video Podcasting feed for your shared clips. You
can post the link in your blog to have people get all of your new video
clips directly into their iPod video player.  To get the
url of the feed:

  View the
public url of any of your clips in a web browser.

  Click on

Here's my profile page: http://www.grouper.com/Members/Profile/173

  Click on
the `video podcast' link in the `my media' section of your profile.

  Copy the
link that starts with ITPC:// and post it to your blog

  You can also
easily ad a Flash-based animated thumbnail view of your video clips and
post it on your blog. Here's my blog with some video frame rolls: http://grouper.com/people./aviv .  Check out the `media to

The pairs of upside down triangles to delimit the cloud terms

Everything is links to Google Maps?
The problem with pop up windows is that they obscure what is

Perhaps the information could appear in a special area of the page,

Kids are the new stars.

No, I'm not talking about those twits on "American Idol". I'm just talking about everybody who's not being purveyed by the major labels, movie studios and "National Enquirer"/"Us".

Used to be people felt powerless. That they didn't have a voice. Now everything's completely topsy-turvy. Kids think THEY have the voice. They decide what's cool. They comprise a jury of tens of millions and THEY get to decide thumbs-up or thumbs-down. But, they've stopped looking at what the usual suspects are purveying and are starting to judge THEIR OWN works.

Takes talent to be a musician.

Oh, that's why kids don't respect Ashlee or Jessica. Or Lindsey. All those auto-tuned buffed up and polished icons dirty old men are foisting upon them. Kids have seen the man behind the curtain. And they laugh. Because they can pull the levers better than he can. Because when it comes to technology, THEY rule.

It's all about tools.

It USED to be about marketing.

But now kids control that too. There's a marketing bonanza taking place every day at 2:30. When kids come home from school. They plop their asses down in front of their computers and COMMUNICATE! Forge bonds and arbitrate what's cool. They trust each other with a passion that no multinational corporation can generate. And, they know TONS of their brethren. Kids today know EVERYBODY in their hometown, never mind elsewhere. That's what IM and blogging has done. It's just like putting Duran Duran on MTV twenty-odd years ago.

Kids still like music. And they like movies and TV too. But they only respect quality and talent. And you should know this and sell your wares with this in mind. But the new story, the EMERGING story, is how kids are now creating their own art form. Via VIDEO!

You don't want to hear the musical works of the kid next door. But, you never know, he could put together an hilarious video. Or certainly turn you ON to a funny or interesting video.

The sale of video productions on the Web... That's not the big story. The exchange of information about and the watching of homegrown videos on the Web, now THAT'S the story.

Every kid has access to a digital camera. If you don't doubt me, you've never heard of Flickr, or Photobucket.

But now, many kids have access to digicams. Digital video cameras. And, having watched a billion hours of television, and video requiring A LOT less talent to create than music, they're rolling their own.

Go to http://www.youtube.com. Or http://video.google.com. You'll start to get the idea.

Youtube doesn't seem to have enough server power. It's a lot more glitch-prone than Google. But it's got a renegade feel. Like the service is owned by its constituents, kids, not the thirtysomething techies of Google. Google ain't perfect, but with a broadband connection (necessary for both, and an illustration how technological advancements beget creative opportunities), you can watch, as the kids say, pretty good.

What should you watch?

On Youtube, start with the featured videos, on the homepage.

On Google, skip past the pay fare, with the ridiculous proprietary DRM, and go directly to "Popular". Or search on "Mastercard". And watch the banned commercials. Most specifically, the one at: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5452982579545117880&q=mastercard. This is a Web legend. E-mailed around EONS ago. But now it's being hosted somewhere. Where EVERYBODY can have access. Almost instantly.

And you wonder why MTV features its audience on TV. That's what kids want to SEE! THEMSELVES!

This is the new MTV. And, like the original MTV, its heyday ain't gonna last forever. It's a fad. But with legs of at least a year, if not THREE years.

Want to blow up a band?

Release all the footage from a video shoot on its Website. Along with a free copy of the song. Shit, SHOOT some video, put up some promotional videos, just for kids to employ. IN CREATING THEIR OWN VIDEOS! Trent Reznor did this with his last album. Allowed those with GarageBand to remix tracks. But, you needed GarageBand, and the idea had limited appeal. Shoot your own video, maybe containing you lip-synching along with a star? THAT people would grab on to. (This is one of the most viewed videos on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/w/what-i%27ve-been-looking-for?v=MLnW49gx2Ys&feature=Views&page=2&t=t&f=b.

2006-01-26 Thread Markus Sandy
i really enjoyed these hugh
shared them with alicia, she enjoyed them too

i find vlog posts about artists and art shows or openings/events
particularly interesting

i liked all three videos, but i found the Mathews video the most
interesting. not just as an artist, but i also enjoyed your video of
them moving the art around in the gallery

any chance you can get an interview with the gallery owner Bruno David?
He seems like an interesting person.

your three in a row was a real knockout
keep up the good work

The Great Rivers Biennial 2006, currently at the Contemporary Art
Museum St. Louis, showcases three local, emerging artists who use
vastly different means to achieve similar ends: they each describe the
search for meaning in a noisy, narcissistic world.

Please take a look at these three videos I just posted. I would love

Yeah I would have the camera looked at by an authorized Panasonic

you got the camera so recently it would seem that it should still be

Hmm... I have never had this happen with a video camera, but have lost video

It was bad enough when my $200 MiniDV cam died after three years of hard use.

[videoblogging] DV Tape Disaster!

2006-01-26 Thread Ms. Kitka
Yesterday I conducted an interview on my lunch break with my brand new
Panasonic PV-GS250 3Ccd, went back to work and then filmed the news
and review portion of Kitkast when I got home. On one of my last
takes (after filming for about 4 hours) the DV tape went AWOL and
suddenly got all tangled up in the hardware.

We carefully wound the tape back into its case by using tweezers and a
Swiss army knife. We had NO IDEA if our footage would survive, but
luckily it did. (I say this now, but we haven't uploaded/imported the
footage to my computer yet...)

So, the question is: Does this ever happen to the other guys?

[James Bond fans- yes, that last line WAS a loose reference to OHMSS]

What are the chances that the first time we use our new DV Cam for the
show, the thing becomes an utter nightmare?

I'm quite surprised that of all sites, this one currently has blog permalinks removed.

What up, Clint. We had it that way for a while (titles as permalinks) and it's
confusing as hell for the user.  They're not expecting to be taken off
site when every other link on the site drills down.My opinion... if your team and testers think something is so confusing, instead of removing the option to travel to an actual videobloggers site (which many vloggers would appreciate), how about you add a line of text, either as a tooltip or some other way to display this simple, short message.. which could be:
"This link will open a new window taking you to this videoblog site" Point is... there are much more proper ways to avoiding possible user confusion than just yanking out what I think is a critical element of an "Open Directory".
I'm quite surprised that of all sites, this one currently has blog permalinks removed. Was the confusion reported by many users?  I honestly cant see it as being such a detriment that the path to the source of the content be pulled out of the interface.
The direct download links are more understandable, but the same suggestion could be applied to those as well.  I think it is a bad decision not to provide both links. If your directory is available to non-fireant users... then it should allow for all paths to media and permalinks.
but I'm not sure people would like us hotlinking to their
media files.  What do other people think?  I don't want to start
another debate about whether media files should be seperated from
Videoblog posts (direct downloads), but should we offer hotlinks to the
media for download?well, i guess i'll have to ring in the debate anyways. sorry.first, fireANT removes the blog post from the blog.  it also removes the media from the blog post (obviously... thats the idea of subscribing/downloading with an desktop application).
you are concerned about hotlinking?  FireANT is a hotlink machine.every media aggregator is.  Whether the media is being played or 'saved as', little difference in the end.  if its a business decision... that is fine and understandable.
if the directory were only accessible from within the app, again... mostly understandable.  otherwise, take this as legit feedback for consideration as you continue to make modifications.  cheers,

In Opera I get ?ajax=off appended to all links. I'm wondering what kind
of
Ajax-y goodness I'm missing out on and I'm wondering if FireANT is
doing
some kind of browser-sniffing because Opera does support Ajax. So I
considered Greasemonkey-ing my way out of it (because Opera has native

Greasemonkey support and it rocks).

I found the blog post permalinks. If I click to see the video preview
I
get the links. Maybe turning the blog post title into a link is an idea.

We had it that way for a while (titles as permalinks) and it's
confusing as hell for the user.  They're not expecting to be taken off
site when every other link on the site drills down.  Besides, clicking
on a channel gets you a buttload of details about the channel,
including the ability to preview or queue all their past feed items.

I'll test in Opera to see if our AJAX libraries work.  It's actually
something I plan on fixing, but the ajax=off is added actually for
Safari, which pukes with Rico, our AJAX library.  It's also there for
the search engines and other browsers I can't verify AJAX support in as
well.  I've hand coded another method for getting content in to Safari
(which is missing XML Serialization and an html properly on the
returned AJAX object, so neither IE nor FireFox's methods for getting
the XHTML from the xmlhttp object back work in Safari, but I have found
another method for doing it with responseText, which is a bit poorer,
but does work, I just haven't adapted the Preview window to use it yet).

We don't provide direct links to the media.  Is this something people
would like to see?  You can queue it and easily get that info out of
the RSS, but I'm not sure people would like us hotlinking to their
media files.  What do other people think?  I don't want to start
another debate about whether media files should be seperated from
Videoblog posts (direct downloads), but should we offer hotlinks to the
media for download?

Re: [videoblogging] New FireAnt

2006-01-26 Thread Michael Sullivan

Whether the media is being played or 'saved as', little difference in the end.  if its a business decision... that is fine and understandable.
if the directory were only accessible from within the app, again... mostly understandable.  otherwise, take this as legit feedback for consideration as you continue to make modifications.  cheers, sull

I update it from time to time with new information, though it's impossible to keep up with all the new hosting services and directories springing up like mushrooms...

RE: [videoblogging] Re: new strmz.com beta

Hi Peter, thanks for your feedback.

> If you focus on

add
any real value in letting discovering people cool
stuff.

If you visit the strmz.com site you’ll see that we actually
cast a pretty broad net and offer a wide range of Internet TV/video channels -
the emphasis being on quality programming.
With the incredible amount of video released online in recent months, there’s
lots to discover without wading through some of the drivel that’s out
there.  Our mission is to help our users quickly find great video
programming with a comprehensive program guide designed for efficient channel-surfing
and clip-sharing.

The only way to
add value as a mash-up service or aggregator is to show people
obscure, unknown or unpopular stuff that is good,
that you have
discovered.

In fact, much of the stuff produced by the
‘major media outlets’ is actually quite obscure, unknown, and
not-yet-popular.  Most people have access to only 3-4% of the 31
million hours of programming the TV industry produces each year – and
are actually able to watch much less.  AOL and the major portals are
building sophisticated video search query tools to mine their content –
though much still lies buried in their vast libraries.  Strmz.com is creating
a collaborative program guide to help surface some of the jewels.  We
believe some will surface as ‘popular’ and ‘top-rated’ consumer-generated
media -- and many lie deep in the vaults of the world’s major media companies.
At Strmz.com, wikis, blogs, playlists, and tags will provide your context for their
discovery.

> Just a tip :) Don't focus on the popular or you're competing with
AOL
video on *their* terms. Better to compete with
them by offering us
something different.

For a limited number of beta program
participants, create an automated or hand-picked video playlist on Strmz.com and
publish it as HTML to your blog/website.  Send an email for details.

Regards,

James

Nothing against mashup services, and I hope this
one has a great
future, but I see a problem:

- "major media outlets"
- "popular videoblogs"
- "top-rated content"

If you focus on "major",
"popular" and "top-rated", you will not add
any real value in letting discovering people cool
