thought some here might be interested in this conference later in the year. there's a mail list also Video Vortex Conference : http://www.networkcultures.org/videovortex/ -- Forwarded message -- From: geert lovink .. Date: Mar 17, 2007 7:52 PM Subject: [Air-l] Video Vortex (conference and list); Responses to YouTube To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Video Vortex Conference: November 30 and December 1 2007, Amsterdam (NL) Organized by the Institute of Network Cultures First announcement (shorter air version), March 16, 2007 More on the Event: http://www.networkcultures.org/videovortex/ List info: http://listcultures.org/mailman/listinfo/videovortex_listcultures.org In response to the increasing potential for video to become a significant form of personal media on the Internet, this conference examines the key issues that are emerging around the independent production and distribution of online video content. What are artists and activists responses to the popularity of 'user-generated content' websites? Is corporate backlash eminent? After years of talk about digital conversions and crossmedia platforms we are now witnessing the merger of the Internet and television at a pace that no one predicted. For the baby boom generation, that currently forms the film and television establishment, the media organisations and conglomerates, this unfolds as a complete nightmare. Not only because of copyright issues but increasingly due to the shift of audience to vlogging and video-sharing websites as part of the development of a broader participatory culture. The opening night will feature live acts, performances and lectures under the banner of video slamming. We will trace the history from short film to one-minute videos to the first experiments with streaming media and online video, along with exploring the way VJs and media artists are accessing and using online archives. The Video Vortex conference aims to contextualize these latest developments through presenting continuities and discontinuities in the artistic, activist and mainstream perspective of the last few decades. Unlike the way online video presents itself as the latest and greatest, there are long threads to be woven into the history of visual art, cinema and documentary production. The rise of the database as the dominant form of storing and accessing cultural artifacts has a rich tradition that still needs to be explored. The conference aims to raise the following questions: - How are people utilising the potential to independently produce and distribute independent video content on the Internet? - What are the alternatives to the proprietary standards currently being developed? - What are the commercial objectives that mass media is imposing on user-generated content and video-sharing databases? - What is the underlying economics of online video in the age of unlimited uploads? - How autonomous are vloggers within the broader domain of mass media? - How are cinema, television and video art being affected by the development of a ubiquitous online video practice? - What type of aesthetic and narrative issues does the database pose for online video practice? Conference themes: Viral Video critique Vlogging Critique Participatory Culture, Participatory Video Real World Tools and Technologies Theory History of the Database Narrative and the Cinematic Database Taxonomy and Navigation Internet Video: Art, Activism, and Public Media Evening Programme / Exhibition (see website for details) Video Vortex Discussion List: With this discussion list we like to gather responses to the rise of YouTube and similar online video databases. What does YouTube tell us about the state of art in visual culture? Is YouTube the corporate media structure of the 21st century? What are the artist responses to YouTube aesthetics? [videoblogging] Re: video within a video
The way it's done in FCP is: 1) Place your video you want to be the small window in the timeline 2) Double click that clip so it goes into the viewer 2) Select the tab at the top of the viewer that says Motion 3) Inside Basic Motion, Change the Scale so it's less than 100 4) Also inside Basic Motion, next to where it says Center, there's a circle with a + in it. Click that, and move the cursor to the canvas. The cursor will turn into a + and when you press and hold the mouse button, you'll be able to place your picture-in-picture anywhere you want it. 5) Also in the Motion tab, you might want to add a Drop Shadow. 6) Place the clip you just edited on a higher video track than your fullscreen video. I'll be there as well. I was invited by Eric from Gardenfork.tv to talk about video podcasting.. On 3/16/07, Bill Streeter [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Try VLC again. I don't have much experience with it on Linux, but I've used it on Windows quite a bit and it handles most MOV's and MP4's (including h264) well. Thanks for the advice Bill. I absolutely LOVE VLC.. it is the best video player hands down on Mac, Windows, and Linux in my opinion. The problem is the VLC plugins. They're too new... not well developed. I think they only started developing 3-6 months ago. That said I AM going to check them out again, and I do expect them to make rapid advances. I believe in VLC so much so that I'm already on one mailing list and looking for more info. Hopefully I can help in the same unofficial way as the early days of fireant and blip. They could really use our support... AND most importantly this ISN'T just about linux. If the VLC plugins get really good this could mean ALL firefox browsers on all platforms one day might be able to include by default a set of video plugins that handle ALL or nearly all media. There might... might be some legal issues with some of the codecs.. but hells bells... even if you have to download the plugin seperately this could be a HUGE coup for the media world because it would create like Firefox itself a platform for the much more rapid evolving of open standards... whereas firefox helped with CSS and other web based standards... a cross platform plugin and media player system could extend standards and end-to-end interoperability for media like ogg-orvis out ward through our media world. The browser is the new platform as many have noted. Open source multimedia packages, plugins, and codecs are the key to seriously opening up this new world so one day a kid with a $10 video camera and a $100 linux computer can actually post some decent photos and videos. It's also the key to evolving beyond the current mess of video codec incompatibilities, and not just in web browsers... but it'll extend outward rapidly to affect future hardware as well. Without open source innovation would come to a stand still in this space... and we'll all be pedaling our wares on commercial enties ideas of new and innovative platforms... like the blueray and HDDVD... you know... if you can afford thousands of dollars in overhead and dealing with completely anti-DIY, anti-consumer technology to begin with. Damn, I'm rambling ferociously. Sorry, it's late. Thanks for the advice Bill. Rock over St. Louis. Rock on chicago. In fact it was my first love for open source media playback. VLC has evolved just a little quicker. Any other advice you have I could desperately use. BTW... among other things I was looking for something to replace itunes and I could sync my ipod with. The best thing I've read about so far seems to be Yamipod as you can put it ON your ipod and it works on all platforms... windows, linux and mac. Which rules. It doesn't do podcast aggregation though I don't think. For podcast aggregation I'm also looking into myPodder, just as long as it'll work with more than podcast ready. (I use mefeedia and odeo as well.) Perhaps Yamipod and myPodder is the perfect one two combination. But in case they aren't I'm also looking at Rythmbox, Amarok. and banshee. Banshee is new to me but highly recommended, doesn't do podcast aggregation though I don't think. I've used rythmbox in the past it's capable, but not much more... and Amarok is the new kid on the block, I can't wait to try it! Some rave reviews of it. I tell you all this in the hopes you if not someone else will pick up on it. Lot's of name dropping of software apps and platforms. I'm moving my entire desktop over to linux so I'm going to be reading up on, researching and talking about a whole wide range of linxu software. yes. put the main video (the one you want to be the big one) on the timeline, as usual -- putting it on the V1 track - or the lowest one. then overwrite edit the clip that will be the little video onto a higher up track -- V2 or anything higher. It should be that the bottom one is totally covered up by the top one, but it is still there. Now Double click on the top video in the timeline -- which opens that clip in the Viewer window (and you've opened that particular instance of that clip -- not the original clip. Very important, so be sure to double click on the piece of video that is in the timeline) Next looking at the Viewer window, click on the motion tab. In there somewhere (i'm writing this from memory, not from looking in FCP - so you might need to poke around a bit) there's a control to resize the video. Right now it says 100%. You can make it 25% or 20% or whatever you want. That will shrink the video. To move it over in the corner, you can either change the numbers that are in this box (right now center = 0, 0. To move it down and right I think you could type 160, 120 or something like that. Or maybe it's 160, -120.) OR instead of doing it by numbers, you can just grab the video and move it. To do that 1) looking that the canvas window, there's a little icon above the video image that has a pull down menu -- you need to set that window to image and wireframe. This will give you the handles for dragging. 2) Make sure the playhead is in the right place on the timeline so you are looking at the part of the video that you want to edit (and not something else later or earlier). 3) Grab the little video and drag it to where you want. i hope this help, Jen Jen Simmons [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://jensimmons.com http://milkweedmediadesign.com 267-235-6967 On Mar 17, 2007, at 2:11 am, quietleader wrote: I apologize if this questions is off topic. [videoblogging] new vlog: Dirty Diaper Diaries
Hi everyone, Some of you may have heard that my wife Susanne and I have been putting together a new video blog about all the things we're learning as first-time parents. We're now ready to show off some of the first pilot videos. The vlog is called Dirty Diaper Diaries, and Susanne has produced three videos so far. http://www.dirtydiaperdiaries.com The production values still need improvement, and we're planning to buy some new equipment to help out on that front, particularly regarding the audio. So for now, we're interested in getting feedback on the overall premise and the topics. Along with an intro video, we've got pieces on how to pack a diaperbag and how to breastfeed in public. Soon we'll have videos about air travel with infants, baby-proofing your home, and other topics; I may also do a video for new dads about how to change a diaper. Looking forward to that one. :-/ We're also hoping to set up a video comments system, so people can reply with video clips as well as text. We've already played around with vlip, flikzor, magnify.net and a few other tools that provide video comments. If anyone has suggestions of other tools for doing this, please let me know. thanks, andy Andy Carvin andycarvin at yahoo com www.andycarvin.com www.pbs.org/learningnow

[videoblogging] Snapz ProX users help needed!!
I use the SnapzProX program to capture music videos from the Internet. Then I export them (through iMovie) to my mini-DV camera and then burn DVD's of the musice videos I think are worth saving. Initially, I captured videos at the recommended 8HZ and 15 frames per second rate. Now I have been using 16HZ and the 30 frames per secdond rate which is the best quality of capture. It seems to make everything better. There seems to be a huge difference in quality and sound but not always. Some videos on the Internet (especially from YouTube) are very low quality. I'd like to hear form others who use SnapaZ Pro to capture music videos. I am also wondering how Veoh's Veoh Client software which enables you to download the highest quality video might be used to get better video in this manner. Re: [videoblogging] tip: macbook pro HOT issue resolved for me
Howdy sull, Unbforetuneatly this app is only for intel macs. I've dug and dug and dug and I can't find a single widget for controlling the fan on my G4 powerbook. Nothin' :( -Mike mefeedia.com mmeiser.com/blog On 3/11/07, sull [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: So I bought a macbook pro 3 months ago and my only real complaint has been the ridiculous heat that this thing has radiated out. Using the keyboard and mouse pad or having this thing on my lap has not been comfortable at all. It has just been much too hot and even painful to touch. I contemplated selling it because of this discomfort. For a pricey computer, this was unacceptable. Apple just wanted me to have them work on it But I held back for awhile. Some research told me about thermal grease being overly used inside this thing which may have been causing macbooks to run at high temperatures. See this pic for example - http://att.macrumors.com/attachment.php?s=886b64a54f22af7356fe0bbd0dc5099aattachmentid=47894d=1148049949 The solution was to crack open the macbook pro and . well... no. I wont do that yet either! But this is a cool article with pics: http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/mac/2006/05/23/thermal-paste-question.html So, a comment somewhere pointed out a much simpler and free solution... And this actually turned out to work perfectly. Its a simple free open source fan control! http://lobotomo.com/products/FanControl/index.html Now my macbook pro, even when charging battery (thats when it usually got the hottest) stays cool with my fan control settings. The default fan config on the macbook pro is very low and you cant change it. So this is an awesome solution which took minutes. So i'm happy now.
