Ouch! The manufs have been crippling-out manual gain and mic jacks
over the last few years,. and now headphone jacks! Its so silly and
frustrating. A good mic and manual gain makes a _huge_ difference in
recording,.. If I really wanted good sound with your set-up, I'd
consider recording "double system" on a Hi-MD recorder. its quite
easy to align the tracks with the audio wave forms in post and
perfect sync with a digital disc recorder is no problem.

I posted some info about this alternative a few months ago. Many
folks lust after CF recorders, but Hi-MD is the best quality recorder
one can get for less than $600 (or more pending tests on some newer
models by Fostex) One can use Hi-MD with high quality, low noise
noise mics too if you want to upgrade:

Good luck with your audio quests, Rob D.

Thanks, Rob!

No, the HD2 doesn't have manual gain control, unfortunately. It also
doesn't have a headphone jack I quickly discovered, so it's hard to
monitor what anything is sounding like in the field (wind noise, etc).

I'm plugging in various mics that I had laying around and comparing
them to one another vs. the on-board stereo mic. The on-board mic is
very sensitive, but as you might imagine, too broad. I like the
external's sound better, but I wish you could monitor in real time.

Anyone else have any feedback for this particular camera?

Also, maybe we should start a "Gear List" on the wiki to compare and
contrast what hardware everyone is using, no?

I would definitely suggest having separate blip accounts for each of

Can I just ask a clarifying question...

It's seems like conventional wisdom has recommended against using a
seperate blip account for each vlog. However, with the new show
player, it makes sense to have your content in seperate accounts.
Otherwise it's pretty much useless.

Heres the question: Is this "two weeks" comment about a solution to
this problem or should I begin to seperate my content into different
accounts so I have the option of using the player on one of my sites?

Am I right in understanding the "best practice" has been to have only
one account and cross-post to different blogs?

It's for efficiency reasons. If you'd like to have stereo sound in your

Does anyone know why all Blip.tv video's using Flash (flv) are
converted to mono? The mp4-versions are untouched but the flv-files
are always converted.

If the Sanyo Xacti HD2 has manual gain, that is quite a find these
days. I'm not sure what type of recordings you have in mind, but the
Rode VideoMic seem to be a good investment mic for a boom mic. The
shock it comes with can be mounted on a pole too. A pair of small
lavaliere electret mics is very flexible for recording locations in
stereo and interviewing. You can make these for less than $20 or buy
them for around $70.

[videoblogging] is this an interlacing problem?

2007-04-21 Thread wazman_au
Hey videoblogging yahoos, it's been a while.

I'm just finishing our long-awaited latest episode and having some
weird problems.

When I export it as a large AVI from Premiere Elements 1.0 all looks
fine, and that same AVI also looks fine in Windows Media Player.

But when I open and play it in QuickTime I get that buzzy, jagged-edge
looks that suggests an interlacing problem. Same goes for the MP4 I'm
exporting from this source material.

So I go back into Premiere Elements and export a deinterlaced AVI with
no fields. Still looks bad in QuickTime.

Now, as I type this, I've just opened that AVI in QuickTime, gone into
movie properties -> video track and selected deinterlace, as well as
"high quality". The video now plays better but I reckon there are
still faint lines in it. If I only select "high quality" it maybe
looks even better - can't quite tell.

I'm going to go back to Premiere Elements and export a
non-deinterlaced file and see what happens if I fiddle with the
QuickTime settings. But this seems weird - I've never had it before,
other than when I accidentally captured PAL video into an NTSC
project. There have been a few codec packs on an off this computer,
but I've not removed them all and reinstalled QT from scratch.

[videoblogging] Re: mono sound in Blip.tv

possibly because mono is unnecessary for many video blog/podcast files
if they mostly contain dialogue - and it saves on file size?

or maybe there's a setting in your blip dashboard that you can tweak.
