[videoblogging] Fwd: geek in the basement syndrome

2008-02-25 Thread Irina
-- Forwarded message --

--- --- Here's a rather depressing story about how Washington Post
treats it's .com half like a red-headed stepchild, and how .com sometimes
takes revenge. Ugly:
http://washingtoncitypaper.com/display.php?id=34569

I'm shocked that this kind of crap still goes on. Other news outlets seem
not nearly so riven. I have it on good faith that the NYTimes integration of
digital and editorial continues apace.

Any other stories about news outlets embracing, or resisting, their
inevitable digital fate?

[videoblogging] this is refreshing (Growing gonads)

2008-02-25 Thread backlot_ops
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080225/wr_nm/internet_fcc_dc

The head of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission said on Monday
he is ready, willing and able to stop broadband providers that
unreasonably interfere with subscribers' access to Internet content.

The comment by FCC Chairman Kevin Martin came at the start of a
day-long FCC hearing centering on allegations that some broadband
providers such as telecommunications and cable companies have been
improperly blocking or hindering some content.

Yeah, transparency is really the key:

Martin acknowledged that broadband network operators have a legitimate need
to manage the data flowing over their networks. But he said that does not
mean that they can arbitrarily block access to particular applications or
 services.

The hearing, which included testimony from officials with Comcast and
Verizon, is aimed at determining what network management techniques are
 reasonable.

Martin called for transparency in the way the companies manage their
networks, and in the prices and services they provide.

[videoblogging] Camcorder... old or new technology?

2008-02-25 Thread Mike Moon
So, I have my Xacti for everyday vlogging, but would like something
with better picture quality and more manual controls, including focus
for more creative projects.
Now for the real limitation... I have about $400.

I've come down to a couple different opportunities:

Brand New Panasonic GS320 or gently used older Panasonic PV-DV951.
Both are 3CCD camcorders with the DV951 having lots of manual controls
the GS320 doesn't have.

Any input, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

Despite the quality and speed of DIVX HD for streaming, compared to

FCC Chairman Kevin Martin is the Bush appointee so usually lets business do
whatever it wants.
what's telling is that even he is fearful of having several companies being
able to legally do whatever they want with the broadband network in secret.
Good Regulation just means fair and clear rules.

Given the anticompetitive nature of Comcast throttling traffic from a
potential video competitor, Martin — who in the past has been loathe to go
beyond the FCC's current policy pushing open networks — and other Republican
lawmakers seemed galvanized to act. Indeed, an attack on the free markets
might be too much for the FCC to ignore.
