Both are at http://www.fastcompany.tv Generalizing is a survival mechanism from Evolution. Those organisms which generalize..survived, those which specialized..died out. That's why Blip.tv has such a strong package. Interestingly, lately, I've had more sponsor interest in the cell phone videos. Why? 1. Intimacy. 2. Timeliness. Nothing beats LIVE as per a New York Times article about Offroad Racing. (That was the whole point of my Jumplive.com project, it emphasized LIVE delivery of pics/videos) This is a market which I originally targeted [ extreme remoteness in deserts of Nevada, California, Baja..no conventional Telecommunications infrastructure. Very little, if any cellphone access. I use my 4x4 van (equipped with mobile satellite- DSL dish WiFi...WiFi Internet with 4-wheel drive) to upload LIVE videos ( pics) http://eclipsescience.blogspot.com/2006/05/video-blogging-over-4x4- vansatellite.html ] This is why this niche-market never gets any publicity..photographers/ videographers can't get their content back to editors in a timely fashion for a story. The same concept extends to any market. Cellphones give citizens the capability of doing LIVE reporting. The portable video-camera revolutionized TV reporting: TV stations just buy amateur footage. I actually experienced the latter in '93, at the El Toro Air Show: http://www.jumplive.com/about.html CNN bought 1-time use rights (non exclusive) on the spot, followed by ABC. Then, Gamma Liaison called me up from NYC that's how I got on board as a pro. Getty Images bought out GL several yrs ago, so technically I'm with Getty. Now with cellphones, you can bypass TV stations altogether upload to your OWN channel. That is what all these cellphone based video- service websites (Textamerica, Blip.tv, Kyte.tv) are about. I just watched your video of Robert Graf: http://scobleizer.com/2007/06/27/why-kytetv-is-better-than-life- streaming/ He is talking about doing a video-channels to a private channel among friends (social network). Taking the Channel/Show model to social- networks (who needs MSM/mainstream media) 3. Community interaction. I love the Youtube CMS/Content Management System, where people comment on videos. Some good material there. So, good I even archive them on my computer. Most blogs have the standard text comment capability. I think Robert Graf was alluding to video-commenting. With mobile media solutions (PDAs cellphones, laptops w/built-in webcams) having camera/video capability, it's a cinch to go beyond text- commenting..video-commenting. 4. Quantity. Quantity has a certain QUALITY about it -- Dr. xxx, Army Ordnance Center [ about how the Russian T-34 overcame the superior German Tiger tank in WWII, with sheer numbers ] I'm into ants/termites/locusts, studying them in Evolution. (note that Fireant was named as such, to illustrate the power of the masses). They can overwhelm higher order beings by sheer numbers. I was watching a NOVA episode on insects, it was stated insects are the DOMINANT life form on Earth, based on overall mass. Because, of SHEER NUMBERS. Similarly, the sheer numbers of cellphones (hundreds of millions) means that LIVE delivery of videos by consumers (citizen video journalism) can beat out the MSM/Mainstream Media. CNN did a deal wtih Blip.tv, for the iReport. That indicates to me that MSM is realizing this revolution, using the Technology. I've been watching the conversations that both kinds of videos start. On FriendFeed my cell phone videos are more likely to start a conversation than my professional videos. Mostly because they are more timely. My cell phone videos also are interactive -- you can ask questions while I film. That's something that you can not do with a $6,000 HD camcorder. Check out how I use cellphone videos for LiveWebCast for Offroad Races: http://07baja1000.blogspot.com/search/label/media-event%20%28Mon%29 [ I bypassed the Mexican cellphone system, used the WiFi hotspot in my van. I took the SD card out of my cellphone, put it in my WiFi capable PDA running Windows Mobile (which was able to read the Palm videos!!!). I was outside when I uploaded the videos to Blip.tv ] http://07primm300.blogspot.com/search/label/Fri%20%28Contingency% 2FTech%29 http://07bitdv2r.blogspot.com/search/label/Contingency%2FThu [ all uploaded to Blip.tv, which automatically cross-posted to Blogger blogs ] I think I might be the pioneer in using cellphone videos for interviews. They look very *acceptable*, the toy pinhole cameras works pretty darn good!! When you start

Does anyone know of any comparable cellphone (like the N93) with an optical zoom camera, with a QWERTY keyboard?? If so, I would buy it in an instant. Nokia is coming out with some new cell phones soon, the rumors are. Including one with a QWERTY keyboard (rumored to be the N71). I should know more now that Nokia's PR group is talking with me. Almost all my videos were shot with the Nokia N95. I had a few shot with the N82, which has an even better camera on it, but doesn't work with USA's ATT's 3G system. Shozu's an excellent cellphone distribution mechanism with its cc feature that on upload to a main site will 'cc' a seemingly unlimited # of other sites. http://shozu.com If the video's important and/or I've extra time, I bluetooth the video to the 'puter, change the file extension from m4v to 3gp, and then upload to Blip and distribute from there. Only then will it rush down the RSS feed as I prefer. It will automatically find wifi and has both 3G and edge. Great thread. Jan P.S. [videoblogging] W.O. Thompson's Passing
I received an email message from W.O. Thompson's email with this message: CELEBRATION OF LIFE FOR W.O. THOMPSON will be held at The Q Spot, 221 W. Cherokee, in Enid, Sat. 6/21/08, from 1 to 4 pm. There will be live music refreshments. Everyone who knew W.O. is welcome to come help celebrate his life. Also known as WO7 from Oblivion Oklahoma, W.O. was an enthusiastic contributor, and somebody who really touched me by collaborating with some great animation when I was putting together LateNiteMash. I know that he reached out to a lot of people as well. His talent is missed, his kindness is remembered, and it reminds me of how happy I have been to be involved with this group of videoblogging adventurers. Thanks everyone. Daniel McVicar
[videoblogging] Interest in a mailing list re online cinema of the experimental/video art/etc. persuasion?
Howdy Videoblogginglistfolk. I'm considering starting a list for folks making or interested in work made for the web (or using the web as a venue) that is coming from an experimental film / video art / installation direction. The list would focus on aesthetics and theory as well as tech help, economics/sustainability, and anything else about online cinema art and its relationship to its offline context. Would love to hear from anyone who would be interested and also any concerns or desires about such a list. Followed this on techmeme.com and now here. I haven't had enough time to keep up on Qik and their competitors, so regardless of wether I agree or disagree with Scoble or Steve's posts the important thing for me is that the perspectives are most informative. Thank you both. On Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 9:24 AM, Steve Garfield [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Nokia has a bluetooth keyboard that works with the N93/N95... Can't you get bluetooth keyboard for the iPod too? I find it fascinating that the number one issue in the blackberry vs. iphone debate is still the tactile keyboard. Personally I find the issue a little like debating the keyboard on the ThinkPad vs. the Macbook. All that is required is a little time to becoem comfortable with a new interface. I thought by now someone might have made an invisible plasitc overlay that raises or at least offers a tiny little nibs on the touch to offer some ositive tactile touch feedback. This would help people rapidly develop an instinctual finger or thumb placement on the iphone so they can learn to type faster and more accurately over time. P.S. Regarding something B Yen said about generalizing vs. niche markets. Funny, some would say when Youtube started it was in an extremely niche market. Some might still say it is. The same might have been said of apple, ibm, even microsoft back in the day. The trick is finding a niche market / an evolving market and exploding it. You don't set out to become a generalist, you make/set the market and therby become the defacto standard. It's the next generation of innovators who try to figure out where the market is going so they can carve out a niche in its path. This is exactly what qik and the other fore mentioned services are doing. I tend to believe that Qik and the rest of these live streaming video blogging services are the future. 5-10 years from now the majority of video posted might well be live via wifi, wimax or some post-cessor to 3g. I find it funny that only 4 years after youtube started in this very niche segment of blogging called video blogging that we now consider them a generalist. It's a mark of just how big this space has exploded. am interested but perhaps could use the exisitng (and silent) vlogtheory yahoo group, as I'd expect most of that membership to be also interested... of course the name might not work :-) On 16/06/2008, at 7:49 AM, Brook Hinton wrote: Howdy Videoblogginglistfolk.
