Re: [videoblogging] HDVid M2TS convertion

2009-04-23 Thread Adam Quirk
Premiere can edit m2t natively, but that's not free.

I'm pretty sure Super can convert m2t files. I use it for converting
anything to anything else. Note: their web site is a mess, it takes a while
to find the download link: http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

And I would guess Avid Free DV probably could too, but it was discontinued.
You can find an old version floating around somewhere online though.

[videoblogging] Re: Fun with YouTube's Audio Content ID System

2009-04-23 Thread Gena
I'm working on a education PSA project and I'd like to use snippets from
contemporary music. If I can find public domain or other tunes that is great
and my primary focus but this is what irks me about trying to lock down music.

There are certain songs that don't really belong to the music companies. They
are as much my cultural heritage or a marker for a cultural place in time. If I
wanted to do a educational video poem about 1968 I'd have to use War by Edwin
Star or 4 Dead in Ohio by CSN(Y?) not the whole song but a segment.

I am straight up non-commercial but with YT wrapping ads around the videos my
fair use is being subverted by the web hosting company. True, I don't have to
use YT but I now find myself in a situation where never say never has just bite
me in the ass.

I have been asked to post to YT a small series of PSA/Information videos on
cyber safety for women, power of voices and god knows what else. I'm gonna get
Ralph on in the comments for telling women how to protect themselves. Oh Joy.

This info is a great help but it is sad that we have to go through the hoops to
keep aspects of our heritiage alive, following fair use rules and still getting
the shaft.

Not happy,
Gena

[videoblogging] How big is the network really?

2009-04-23 Thread Jay dedman
About a year ago on this list, I asked why a really popular video on youtube
would only be seen be around 2 million people when it was posted. Seemed
strange to me that a global network could only muster so few people out of
the 6+ billion people on the planet. When are we going to see a popular
video get watched a billion times when it gets posted?

We debated about how most people on the planet arent plugged into the web.
How we are still divided culturally and by language.
How many people connected still are on slow/limited connections that make
web video unreasonable.
How "web culture" is still very much a tiny niche...as much as we think
otherwise.
All very true.

I just noticed that that Susan Boyle video on Youtube is up to 40 million
hits in just over a week. If you count the other identical clips uploaded,
it comes close to 80 million.
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=&search_query=susan+boyle&aq=f

So this is just a data point. I'm always curious just how big the "network"
is when it comes to shared culture.

[videoblogging] Joe Biden sucks up to Hollywood?

2009-04-23 Thread Heath
Couple of interesting articles I saw today. I have said it before and will say
it againit is looking more and more that this administration is very pro
MPAA and RIAA.and with an IP Czar getting ready to be posted soon, I worry
about the future quite frankly...I would have thought that a person who used
the internet so brilliantly during the campaign would have a better
understanding, but I guess not

http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20090422/1727474611.shtml

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-10224689-38.html?tag=newsEditorsPicksArea.0

The Obama administration continues to give in to pretty much every wish of the
entertainment industry. At an MPAA-sponsored dinner, VP Joe Biden repeated a
bunch of Hollywood talking point myths as fact, and promised stronger
intellectual property enforcement. He incorrectly referred to file sharing as
"pure theft," claimed that it hurt the economy (with no evidence to support
that) and said that it caused lost jobs. Of course, the industry has been
putting out bogus studies claiming such notions, but they're easily debunked
when you look at the details. Biden also promised that the "IP czar" would be
"the right person," which (given the audience was Hollywood execs) almost
certainly means someone who will roll over and obey the industry, rather than
focus on actually increasing innovation and protecting consumer rights.

Earlier at the event, Commerce Secretary Gary Locke noted that the recent leak
of Wolverine "underscores the problem the industry faces," while saying that he
"believes in the full and impartial enforcement of the law." Again, as has been
discussed widely, the leak of Wolverine doesn't demonstrate any problem at all.
Plenty of people will still go see the movie in the theater, and if the
industry had reacted intelligently, it could have turned the leak into a
marketing coup. Instead, it acted stupidly, and because of that, the
administration is going to bend over backwards to help the industry keep acting
stupid rather than adapt. What a shame.

These moves represent a real loss to the economy, society and culture. For
whatever reason (money has a lot to do with it), the administration seems to
have bought into the totally unsubstantiated claim that there is only one
business model for entertainment (selling content), and thus it needs to create
laws to make sure that such a business model works. In doing so, it's creating
massive inefficiencies, decreasing content production and making it even more
difficult for new and innovative business models and services to thrive.
