 Thanks Gina,

The .Mod file format is a proprietary standard that Canon is trying

Their codec has less support then Apple right now, so I'm still

its proprietary nature, I don't see it as a very good solution. I
don't want to end up a hostage of the camera manufacturer. Ideally,
I'd also like to be able to use the pure h.264 without the need for
 conversion (downgrading quality)

Outside of Apple, I'm not sure how people are getting their high def
video to their computer, editing the file and then be able to output
an HD file that can be viewed on more then just a computer screen.

All the major players seem to be adopting H.264, so I want to build
my content for that platform, but I'm struggling to figure out how
to get my source content into my end solution. TiVo, Xbox360, and
DivX have all come up with support for h.264 and .MKV seems to be
the best way to make it portable. I'm open to other video
conversion solutions, as long as they allow for the highest quality
with multiple people building support around them. It could be that
I end up going to the Mac, but AppleTV doesn't even play high def
and I'd rather have my best quality footage in a high def format
that can be seen by the most consumers.

These videos are all encoded in H.264 as the video codec at a

All I need to know is whether or not they can be viewed with a phone

I am aware of the video issues with Episodes 8 9 as well as the

Instead of using Windows Media Encoder (As I was in Episodes 8 9

now using the new Adobe Flash Encoder (As I did in Episode 10).
Though, in order to correct the quirks in the audio, I will be using
the LOW bandwidth settings (That said, I may try to toggle with the
screen resolution setting if I can since video was never an issue
 with Episode 10).

So anyway, if you guys could check those videos out on your hardware

Re: [videoblogging] What to charge for camera and video editing

2008-11-03 Thread Ben Halverson
I would take the total amount of money you want to make for taping and
divide by the number of hours you will be working
Total $/hrs wrk = pay per hour

You might also want to include gas used at the rate of .37 cents per
mile

You could do the same for editing

[videoblogging] NYC Area Videographers needed - 6/16!

2007-06-08 Thread Ben Zelevansky
Hi everybody--

I'm working with a charity called the Heart Gallery...you can check us
out at:

http://heartgallerynj.com/

Basically, we've got dozens of professional photographers (some world
famous) who have volunteered to take portraits of New Jersey's
hardest-to-place foster children. The photos become a traveling
gallery show, as well as a website. We started this group two years
ago, and (thanks largely to publicity from the Today Show, 20/20, CNN,
MSNBC, the New York Times, USA Today, etc etc) 85 of the 350+ children
we shot in our first go-round have now been adopted. We're gearing up
to do it again, this time focusing on the 100 children who have been
in the system the longest, in an attempt to find them a forever
family before they turn 18 and age out...when they're left pretty
much to fend for themselves.

So where do videobloggers come in?

This time around, we want to include little video bios of each kid on
the website (hosted by blip, natch). We've got two professional
shooters on board, but would love to have a third, especially one who
can provide his or her own equipment. Unfortunately, I think this
will require more than just regular folks with Xactis (or else I'd be
doing it), rather, we're looking for people with documentary
experience, pro-level cameras, and shotgun mics. And as if that isn't
enough, we're looking for them to work cheap. Yes, there is pay, but
it ain't much...it will certainly be below the day rate of many of the
pros that I hope read this list.

So if you're available to shoot next Saturday in Newark, please either
respond here (ideally with a link to your work), or drop me an
email...I'm happy to answer any questions about anything I may have
left out.

Thanks, everyone!

[videoblogging] Re: Blip adds Intros Outros

2007-01-10 Thread Ben Zelevansky
You guys and your sleeves...

I do understand the overall concept, but I think I'd be unsettled not
having complete versions of my episodes stored locally. If I
decided to add or change intros/outros, I think I'm one of those
cement-heads that would just go back and re-edit. Or implement the
changes going forward, and leave the archives as is. Don't expect I'm
in the majority on this one, but there you have it.

No offense to people with actual cement heads.

Thanks,
Ben

First of all, thanks! I think the advantage is that if you've got a
large number of videos that you want to perform pre- and post-roll
manipulation on, you can do them all at once in batch on blip. That's
 the idea, anyway.

We've also got some pretty nifty features up our sleeves for interesting
things you'll be able to do with intros and outros in the future, but
those are a little farther off.

I'm new to the group, but have been lurking. First, many
thanks for the leadership you provided as regards the MyHeavy
situation. I already love blip, but your conduct in that
situation was just one more reason.

As to pre- and post-roll...what is the advantage of doing
that via blip, as opposed to just editing our videos as we
want them to appear (including opening/closing credits or
whatever) then uploading? I'm not sure I understand it...

  Thanks!

Let me ask everyone a question about how we implement this feature,
actually. In order to do this right we have to create
  copies of your
original uploaded files which include your custom intros and outros.
This means that we would no longer be displaying your original,
unaltered, unchanged video file to the public. We would instead be
displaying a version of your video file which includes our own
   modifications.

How do we do this correctly, without upsetting people? One primary
goal of ours is to always, always, always make your original video
file available somewhere. It's very important to us. But
  how do that
in a user-friendly way, and do we make it available in
  cross-posts?
Do we only make the modified file available in cross-posts?
   How about
   cross-uploads to Archive.org?

Re: [videoblogging] FCP render question

2006-05-16 Thread Ben

Hi Richard
Have you tried placing the playhead before the spot needing to be
rendered and pressing option P that should play the timeline frame by
frame
you can also try changing the RT option from Safe RT to Unlimited RT.
That depending on your system will allow you to play most effects in
real time.
hope that helps

I was complaining to some more skilled FCP users about the way you
have to wait seven years (a slight exageration) for almost everything
to render in FCP before you could preview it with the video while
editing, whereas in Premier it would show you a pretty reasonable
(though not as accurate) preview while you were editing and would wait
and do all the rendering at the end.

One or more of these FCP experts told me that there was a setting in
FCP that would make it so that you could preview without this exact
 rendering, more like Premier.

I emailed some of these experts, and, since they did not respond
within 10 seconds, I grew impatient and decided to pose this question
 to the list.

Any help, as always would be much appreciated.

[videoblogging] Verb Object (just kidding)

2005-11-28 Thread Ben Crowder
Hello all,

My name's Ben Crowder and I've just joined your ranks as a
videoblogger. About me: I'm an English major at Brigham Young
University, planning to go on to get a masters in library science.
I'm a programmer by trade but also have visions of grandeur of being
a great [fill in the blank -- writer, artist, musician, linguist,
etc.]. I used to use Windows, then switched to Linux for six or
seven years, and about a year ago I converted to Mac and I'm never
going back. Oh, and I'm a Mormon.

I've been blogging for eight or nine months now and discovered
videoblogs a few weeks ago, and I've got to say that vlogging is one
of the coolest things I've seen in a long, long time. :) It has an
incredible potential and I'm excited to see how it'll develop over
the next few years.

Anyway, my vlog is called Top of the Mountains and I posted my first
video yesterday. Subjectwise, anything goes, but I suspect
recurring topics will include books (I'm a diehard bookworm), tech
stuff (Macs, programming, cool Internet stuff, whatever), and being
a Mormon.

I look forward to getting to know you (you meaning those who I
actually do get to know, since I doubt I'll get to know all 1600+ of
you :)) and spreading the word about videoblogging.

Ben
